Apparently, the biggest problem was the old director, a married couple, wanted the movie to be Rated PG-13/Rated R. With strippers, cursing, etc. The rest of the crew wanted something more kid friendly like the games. Ultimately the old director duo left and a new director took over and made the movie more PG.

Two things I wanna point out: 1) The reason why Bob Hoskins (RIP) hated working on this movie was because he got stapped four times, shocked by electricity and nearly drowned. But the biggest one of all was during the van scene, John Leguizamo accidentily broke his fingers. That why Mario's hand looked strange in some scenes, Hoskins was wearing a cast for the rest of the movie. 2) The opening wasen't narrated by Bob Hoskins, the narrator was actually Dan Castenalla. Yup, Homer Simpson was in this movie!
