Hi, it is me. BLGHA_new. I said that because earlier in the stream I said “Fun fact: this is the run” and it wasn’t the run and Kosmic blamed it on me. So I said that, and then it was WR. Was it luck? Was it skill? Or was it just a pure coincidence? I don’t even know to this day.

This game also has a decent number of categories and a smaller player base, in addition to being harder. So yeah some stuff just hasn't gotten super optimized yet. Any% 8-4 on fds is a fantastic run, warpless 8-4 is pretty good, and the rest are like, decent. We're working on getting them all to be good! Meanwhile people still beg me to play smb1 any% again lol- these categories need some love guys!!

Is the reset at the end of A4 because the warp takes u to C1 but B4 has a warp to D1. Essentially, you're skipping 3 stages at the cost of a reset so you can then skip 4 more stages?

Yeah, he explained it in a previous WR video. The Any% D-4 route is A-3 - warp to C-1 - save&quit to B-4 - warp to D-1, so you only play 8 levels in the letter worlds. FDS 2J has no save&quit so you need to play 10 levels in the letter worlds: Play to A-2, warp to B-1, play to B-4, warp to D-1 and finish.

I miss those days you and Darbian took the WR down to 4:56 and 4:55. congrats! if you don't mind me asking, why isn't the FDS equivalent of this category called "any% D-4 (FDS)"? why "both endings (FDS)"?

The letter worlds are kind of weirdly separated from the main 8 worlds on fds version, so the names "Both Endings" and "All Stages" felt like a better description. You can go straight to world A from the title screen so if it was called "any% d-4" there's not an explicit reason to play worlds 1 through 8 at all. I could see it being changed to keep things parallel at some point, but yeah that's why the names are kinda weird

Are there any differences between the US and JP versions of this game that are relevant to this run?

The All-Stars title screen is faster (English version has an extra little animation that plays when you press start on the opening title screen) so you save something like 1.5 in this category. But even better, the game title is "Super Mario Bros. 2: For Super Players" instead of "Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels" 😁

He didn't fire-kill Bowser and got only the axe instead. It makes you watch the bridge break and Bowser die before moving, which costs a couple seconds.
