It's the series that started it all and inspired a whole new generation of artists and animators. (And made Mecha Sonic a total badass).
Even though this iteration of the series has been discontinued in favor of the SMBZ reboot. I cannot ignore the impact it has had on both me and the viewers who grew up watching it. As a way to send it off properly, the entire 8 episode run will be uploaded onto my channel in Ultra HD and Dolby support for everyone's viewing and listening pleasure. Unfortunately due to the original aspect ratio that I created the series in, you won't be able to see it in 16:9. But, it's better than nothing.

I gotta say man, we can talk all we want about the fight scenes but I think the writing, direction and just downright the resourcefulness of how Mark uses the sprites to tell the story is criminally underrated. He perfectly captures every characters personality and how they interact with each other and the audience. We couldn't have a better creator for such a series....

Absolutely, this is honestly the thing that has me so invested in the series. I love the fights for sure but nothing kills a fan made production for me faster than someone being out of character. But as you say, he nails them all, with great direction and creative animation to boot. I appreciate that I can get emotionally invested in this because it feels like it's really happening to the characters themselves.

@@biggestboi9732 The original version’s files were corrupted, so Mark couldn’t continue it. Now he’s making the true vision of SMBZ he had with the reboot, which is still ongoing, but sprite animations are far from easy to make so they take time. Episode 3 *will* be released, we just need to be patient and wait.

As I've gotten older, the quality of this series only becomes more evident. The animation and the choreography are on-point even today, the music choices are really great, the references to Mario and Sonic games mid-battle are handled perfectly, the references to other games are handled in a way that don't detract from the fights, and even though the dialogue (which was never the point anyway) hasn't aged beautifully, the story in general does a great job of setting up stakes. And not to mention, maybe the most unappreciated part: All the characters act impressively close to how they do in their own games, but Mario, Luigi, Wario and Waluigi's characterization in particular is quite literally perfect. It feels like an official work of Nintendo. They act like they did when Mario and Luigi's characterization was at its peak in Superstar Saga, Partners in Time and Bowser's Inside Story. Just crazy how consistent that part always was. Also...episode 6 remains a masterpiece. Thank you for this series.

I came into this expecting the Brawl on a Vanishing Island to be the highlight of the experience, but I honestly loved the last dialogue between Shadow and Sonic. This whole series is great, but that moment of character was exactly what made me adore Sonic Adventure 2; Shadow is the most compassionate person, simply blinded by grief, and I'm glad the series didn't simply try to portray Shadow as needlessly edgy and unreasonably angry. I hope this comes back in the remake.

When I was a kid, I watched SMBZ as it was first being uploaded! I loved this series so much, and it's so important for the person I grew up to be, honestly. I remember that I was so hyped for the new episodes as they were being released, that I started playing some fangames of it, until I discovered that some of them were made by game maker studio, and decided to check the tool out. Over the years I came to realize how much I liked creating games, and I spent the next few years brainstorming stories and gameplay mechanics for imaginary games. And now, almost 10 years later, I'm a recent graduate in Game Design! And, strangely enough, you can trace it all the way back to SMBZ! I love this series so much, and I can only thank you for creating such a masterpiece, Mark! Good luck with the reboot!

The argument between Sonic and Shadow in Episode 8 is so well-written. Both sides are relatable. Sonic was very thankful that Mario and Luigi helped them to find the Chaos Emeralds and explaning the world as a whole. So, Sonic wanted to help the plumbers to save the Princess, Shadow doesn't agree with that. Shadow knows that they would sacrifice many lifes when they are intended to give Mecha Sonic some free space for collecting the Chaos Emeralds and spreading more violence and pain around the world.

In my mind, I was reading Shadow’s lines of dialogue in Vegeta’s voice, and Sonic’s in Goku’s voice, and it all fit so well. I could see that scene being something straight out of old school DBZ. Very well written, and still holds up to this day IMO

Yeah though some Hispanic fans tried to continue/finish the series in his absence over the years. I'm not sure if they somehow got access to the offical script, or if they improvised it though. I remember i tried watching some of it out of curiosity to see if the writing seemed as good as "Alvin" or Mr. Mark would have it. I knew the fan animation wouldn't be desirable, but it didn't seem to have the same midas touch in writing either. Nevertheless I didn't want to risk getting the plot spoiled by bad animations, so I banked on the idea that he would return. Not long after that he decided to reboot the series which is really cool, so now there will be some changes.

@@thereisnotryv1971 No. The reboot's 3rd Episode is still in development. The reason Mark decided that Basilisx should be cut from the series was due to his power to turn people to stone. It also was part of the reason why the 9th episode from the original series was never made in it's entirety. It would be kind of hard to bring Sonic and Yoshi back from being turned to stone, since only Luigi had the Tanooki suit to revert himself back to normal. That, combined with his insane multi-year burnout he experienced made it impossible for Mark to continue the "Mecha Sonic Saga" with the same quality standards as the previous episodes. Mark now is working on the "Metallix Saga" reboot.

I couldn't believe how my favourite video game character who saved Mushroom Kingdom for 20 years on the edge of death by a Fighter whose backstory we never knew and it was a custom character too. I was like, how could Alvin done this to me? I was so mad back then. But when I heard Basilisx won't be in the reboot, (At least in Doomship Arc) I was relieved. Yoshi’s Island Arc is Peak Fiction. Yoshi returns to the group and defends his friends. Mario and Chief Yoshi have a touching reunion. Sonic gets a lot of great development. And the all out triple battle amongst the three groups was chiefs kiss good. All the team and anti team attacks were executed really well. Mecha Sonic coming in to demolish the Axem Rangers. The comedy is definitely at its best here with not just Luigi but with the koopa bros, Axem Rangers, and Professor E Gadd.

@@Lheticus Actually, he planned make the original Episode 1 include the racing and the fight back then, but due to Flash limitations, he had to divide it. He will also make Sonic's backstory a whole episode, and continue on the story. Also, he made the beginning of Episode 7 where Bowser was talking with Eggman merged into Episode 2 and revealed him because he didn't want to make Eggman a secret until like Episode 10 of the original, where Mario was supposed to fight Mecha Mario.

I'm so happy rewatching this series and laughing at all of the jokes/memes that went over my head as a kid, especially the Hotel Mario joke in The Great Doomship Offensive. I loved Sonic and Mario as a kid, but never watched DBZ until around 7 years after I first watched Super Mario Bros. Z! However, this series, along with Nazo Unleashed, made DBZ sound effects, the DBZ Faulconer soundtrack and the overall signature DBZ fighting style a part of my childhood and life. In addition, I must strongly compliment how you fitted references to Sonic, Mario and internet memes (no matter how dated), included silly and cartoon-y humour (like Mario and Luigi communicating only via SFX, and just the overall wacky moments with the Wario Bros), yet you also captured each of the unique characters very well and managed to steer away from annoyingly-edgy dialogue, riddled with cheesy cuss-words. Shadow has an excuse to be edgy, especially when Sonic drops that 'Maria' line on him, but you still made sure he only said "damn" and "...blast your freaking head off!" I believe that this choice was very commendable, as it respects the source material (Sonic, Mario and DBZ are all aimed towards kids, albeit the violence in DBZ), but it also prevents the series from aging poorly, as many Sonic fan-projects from this time fail to hold up in the online community today due to those aforementioned shortcomings. Thank you from the bottom of my heart Mark Haynes, for making this series and now remaking it into something even more incredible. The Sonic, Mario, Dragon Ball and Sprite Animation communities are all indebted to you.

I know it's not an actual "fight", but you could really feel the tension between them when they're at each others throats on the decision they should make in that moment. I’m going to add to the comments I’ve seen stating that Shadow was in the right frame of mind here, despite his wording being crueler than it needed to be. He protested going correctly, even though he didn’t know that Bowser wouldn’t ever likely harm the Princess, Mario and Luigi could likely confirm as much. Even more so, it turned out later that he was right. He left the party to continue his mission under the impression everyone would be fine without him present. In doing so, he exposed himself solely to Mecha Sonic, who poses a good chance to outright slaughter him alone given what we’ve seen. But the party, sans Mario, being turned to stone, and Mario on his back at death’s door. A mission they didn’t HAVE to go on, because Peach was only really in danger of just being forced to wait a bit longer.

I love this series, and I'm in my early 40's. There was always stuff in every episode that blew my socks off, and it just got better and better with each episode. You are one talented story writer and animator. For me, the most hilarious scene was ep7, where Wario and Waluigi were running past the thwamps. There are 3 most heart pounding moments for me. First was when Mecha-Sonic smashed Sonic through the forbidden wall. Second is where everyone had to make a run for the -1 exit with Mecha-Sonic realizing what they're doing and comes hot on their tail. The third which was the best one, was where Shadow has one of the gems and warps everyone out of the pipe maze just after Mecha-Sonic follows them through the pipe and tries kill everyone with his deadly blast. The most awesome fight scene was ep8, claw vs hammer. When Mario busts out double hammers with the hammer bros suit, you know he means some serious business. More awesome moments come to mind now, but I can't spend all night listing everything that I liked. Say... would you consider putting in ep 9.1 in with this 4K remaster?

I watched this entire series when i was 11 and honestly, I am in love with it. It's Story line, it's beautiful animation was so breath-taking and so intriguing that i binge-watched the entire series in a day. And i loved it. I remember sinking into despair when i found out, several years later, that the series was cut short and was never continued. Even now, I hope to meet the creator of this series and beg him to continue it again. Sonic is a character run by fans, and it's up to the fans to drive him forward and make him the truly remarkable legend that he should be. The insidious parodies of Sonic just prove how much people are disappointed by the SEGA, who are the ones behind the horrible distortion of Sonic's character and his buddies. Mark Haynes, you have my respect, and I wish that one day you will be recognized by many as the one who planted sonic into our hearts.
