While Shigeru Miyamoto also believed that this game was good, he thought the story was too serious for a Mario game. He also thought that Rosalina's storybook was a distraction. (He did like it, yes, but he felt like the story made the game focus too much on Rosalina more than Mario) The team who worked on Mario Galaxy wanted to reveal more about Rosalina in the sequel but they gave up their plan after hearing Shigeru Miyamoto's opinions. Which is why they made Galaxy 2 a retelling of Mario Galaxy 1. However, little did Shigeru Miyamoto know, we missed the seriousness (and heartwarming) from this game and would want to see it again, in just one other Mario game.

Damn, never knew that. Honestly kind of a shame. I feel the reason why so many resonate so deeply with this game is because of that seriousness and how it provided a different, lingering feeling compared to previous titles.

That is why he should have stayed away from the development from Galaxy 2 and let the lead developer go with this version of continuing Rosalina story.

Really sad that Rosalina gets stacks upon the large pile of Mario characters to be just used in spin offs or be forgotten. They all became such bald and lame characters after a while. Just like Waluigi and Wario, who are supposed to be rivals of the mario bros, but we never get to see any of this (except in their duo debut). Daisy, (kind of Egyptian) queen of the Desert, but nothing is ever represented of this (except in her debut of course), she got even withe washed. Not to forget that now they only use Toads, Koopas and Shy Guys as the villagers of the world, while all those other ideas of games like Paper Mario or Galaxy are thrown away. I love the mario franchise and I will forever do, but with Miyamoto's weird rules like "only good GamePlay, Story is just filler" or the generics themes the keep reusing. If I look at the Mario Kart 8 roosters, I ask myself by almost every character, "why are you still here?" And "why I am in an airport?" It sometimes really hurts being a fan. Galaxy tried to escape to the generic, a bold and experimental game on many topics, but it looks sometimes people just want Mario and nothing but. Sorry for complaining, or bad English, maybe I am going too deep about a kids game...

As far as I know there's no evidence anywhere that the team wanted to reveal more about Rosalina in the sequel, they told what there was to be told, but yes there was an active decision to de-emphasize story in general for it and Miyamoto was connected to that.
