I think if it's not officially supported, the GC controller is interpreted as a pro controller. So it's still not supported even if you can play on a GC controller.

It actually plays very well, I have both versions on my Wii and Switch, and the Switch version is actually better at controls then the Wii version, the pointer is better and you don't have to break your wrist since you don't have to shake the controller to spin as its a button press (though its the Controller spin, not the num-chuk spin so Luigi doesn't spin as high). Course I do hope we get Galaxy 2 as well!
