The funniest part of all this is there's still a thriving ROMhack community because the Mario Maker series's limitations prevent them occupying the niche entirely, and even WITH those limitations the community's also made fucking amazing levels in both games while still churning out fan-made stuff on the side.

@@zegreatpumpkinani9161 you should watch one of yahtzee's let's drown outs on his personal channel. It's one of the last episodes on drowning out dark souls where he and gabe talk about colleges for game design and, well, to paraphrase them:do not go into game design as a primary skill. Ever. So I hope you can code good or have skill as a concept artist, 3d modeler, music composer or writer. Because it's very unlikely you get a position in the industry if you wanna be a game designer (and yahtzee explained that even if you do get it, it's highly likely you will not be paid all that much). But yahtzee did concede that it's not a bad choice if you wanna go solo indie dev like he does (though I'm sure he'll still advise you to get an editor to keep you grounded if you wanna make an actually good game)

I have two Luigi amiibos, thank you very much. I find Luigi's idiosyncratic nature as a character brings him a strange depth. Luigi is the lanky, aloof, dejected brother of one of the most iconic characters in media and this fact is generally accepted and flaunted by his creators. He is fantastic and having a tiny version of him propelling himself at another smirking version of himself using what I can only assume is fart power brings me endless joy.

I think this all boils down to... do you want to create mario levels or not? As there are no "professional" levels to play first, this has to be the primary motivation. If there was already a proper game underneath then it wouldn't matter. Clearly Yahtzee doesn't want to. In fact probably the majority of gamers can't be arsed to do so. And frankly I don't think I would. But there are millions who this appeals to 100%.

Nintendo and Sega seem like opposite sides of the same coin to me. Sega tries to cater to the fans and try something new or at least gimicky, but often rushes their work without care or consideration. Nintendo releases solidly built games, but rarely experiments with formula, and often tries to push the trust of their fans as far as it will go without breaking. Nintendo irks me a little more. Maybe it's because I grew up playing more Genesis than NES, but I think it's more earnest to throw shit at the wall than letting the shit continuously grow in the hidden basement. What bothers me is that many Nintendo fans seem to willfully ignore Nintendo's dick moves and screw ups.

Interesting. I fully respect your opinion on this game, as for me I feel this was missing a few elements. First of all, there is a slight difference between the four games. You gain different power ups depending on which game style you choose and has some game elements deemed impossible in the other game styles, such as wall jumping in the new format. Could it have more variety with backgrounds and cosmetics? Sure, it could. However, I just haven't found a use for such a mixture yet. It is quite annoying when playing automatic levels, or rubberross' levels for another thing, but I actually find the level creation not to be a novelty but rather a quite enjoyable experience. Hell, so many levels I can't upload due to me not having enough stars, but yet I create loads of levels beforehand and so have fun from my own personal use. Is it the best game? No. But is it here for a purpose? Indeed. SMM is here to celebrate 30 years of Mario, which actually to me seems quite fitting. 8/10

Lots of people are getting on Yahtzee for what he got wrong. So I'll credit him with what he got right: user level design. Medium difficulty on the 100 Mario Challenge is the way to go as most levels are "look how many enemies I can throw in here are a hundred stars have fun!" or "look how many traps I set I'm so smart I'm the next Kaizo Maker." The game is a lot of fun, but there is certainly a lot of room for improvement. One thing he DIDN'T hit on which I hate is not being able to edit levels once I've uploaded them. Still, the game is fun and I enjoy it.

ROM hacks and mods will always be more versatile than in-game level editors, but they lack the same accessibility, publicity tools and often halfway decent documentation. Lunar Magic is great if you intend to make an opus and absolutely need to make fine, nitty-gritty changes, but Mario Maker is much more efficient if you don't know the first thing about level design, which is most people, or if you ARE experienced and just want to experiment much more quickly without jumping through the hoops of a mediocre interface.

Actually the differences between the different "styles" of levels aren't all cosmetic. the 3d one has wall jumping and that air spin thing whereas the nes+ versions do not
@supersmashbro5969 жыл бұрын
the stuff to unlock has been patched to where you can unlock all the building blocks (sans amiibo and weird mushrooms) in little more than 2 hours and... you really havent played them enough... but there ARE indeed differences. in physics, items, and even movement. for instance, can mario walljump, groundpound and spin jump in anything OTHER than nsmb? yoshi only exists in world and nsmb with the goombas shoe taking his place in 1 and 3.

You...do realize in order to do anything spectacular in rom hacks, it takes quite a bit of undoing in the games code to do it right? And even then it might come out like a glitchy garbled mess. Whatever Yahtzee.
@jackinthebox73199 жыл бұрын
+Shadow You I don't really get your point. Rom hacks can either turn out like absolute garbage or they can be fantastic, and everything in between; with super mario maker they'll turn out mediocre at best whatever you do. That's the trade off for hard work, you know. Nothing will turn out spectacular if you don't put a ton of effort into it.

+Reakishin but this is Nintendo doing what Nintendo does best, and what it has been doing for a decade now: catering the the casual crowd. It's not as fulfilling or deep as the hard core stuff, but it's a lot easier to get into and mess around with and leave the experience having had some fun. There's a lot of people who, as we have seen, want to try their hand at making mario levels, but who don't want to put in the time required to learn to rom hack. They don't really need their levels to be amazing either, they just want a toy to play around with. They are casuals, in the most literal sense of the word, and this game is for them. Nothing wrong with that.

Mario Maker is still an evolving title that adds new stuff in it both by the devs and the community. Eventully most of the problems will get solved, and people will find workaround for the rest of them. It's pretty much what Minecraft did during its early life cycle; as a comemrcial game it was bit of a shame that Mario Maker had a lot of obvious feature lacking from the release, but already people know better what to expect from the game and how to enjoy it as much as possible.

Oh yeah Yahtzee everyone has the ability to make fucking bootlegs and hacks to Mario all the fuck they want. Of course they'll be able to make them to the standard quality of mario they desire, and of course they'll obviously spend less than sixty bucks making this stuff. The opening argument is bullshit and fucking lazy to rip into. Most bootlegs and hacks are considerably difficult to make and usually prove to be rather shotty and filled with bugs and stuff. At the very least with this game we pay 60 bucks and we can make our own level glitch free and with all of the materials and enemies we want once unlocked.

+Johnnythat1 Dude ruby coding the API is free the langage straight forward to the point that even a not so good at math 6 year old kid can actually have fun coding something with it. Once an engine is created you can iterate all the fuck you want with it given that you basically have what Mario Maker is . On the flip side this very product could have been stellar if the few points pointed out by Yahtzee were replaced by their most sensible counterparts. Therefore the criticism is not only desrved but should be taken in consideration for future updates ...
@JustAndre927 жыл бұрын
None of which comes even remotely close to justifying all the sudden takedowns of anything romhack-related. _Mario Maker_ serves its purpose and serves it fairly well, but flagrantly abusing a legal grey area for the sake of erasing other tools that serve other purposes better is utterly indefensible.

Honestly I don't have too many problems with this review. My only major one is when you mention that there are no differences between the different palettes. I have to dispute this. Here are the differences between the versions: Super Mario Bros: The Mystery Shroom, and the lack of the ability to pick objects up Oh, and the Goomba Shoe(s) instead of Yoshi. Okay, there isn't much with this, but there is one feature of this powerup that renders it unique: you can break blocks whilst still being the size of regular Mario. Doesn't sound like much but if you want a level with branching paths but restricting powerups to said paths then it can come in handy. And not being able to pick objects up means that the player can't muck up puzzle levels by moving something somewhere you didn't think, or throwing a crucial piece of the puzzle away. SMB3: The Super Leaf, and the P-meter as a result. It also has the Goomba shoe. Honestly, this is my least favourite palette to use. But the Leaf is the most restrictive flying item, so if you want a level where the player can fly, but not all the time, then this can be useful. And if you want the Goomba Shoe in a level where you CAN pick things up, then this is your only option. Super Mario World: The Cape, the ability to spin jump, the bricks are replaced with those spinning blocks, and the inclusion of non-flutter jump Yoshi. Honestly, the cape alone can change things up drastically, as can the spin jump (although that's also available in the NSMB palette). Yoshi has some interesting benefits, although he's not hugely helpful for platforming outside of using him to get a mid-air jump. NSMB: The Propeller cap, the ability to spin jump, the ability to spin 'stall' in the air, the ability to wall jump, the ability to ground pound, the ability to triple jump, AND Yoshi with a flutter jump. This palette has LOADS to work with. You do have to be careful though, as the extra movement options can hinder you in level design. My personal favourites are the two extremes: Super Mario Bros and NSMB. Super Mario Bros is more restricted, which makes designing levels where you want the player to follow a certain path easier, plus the Mystery Mushroom makes themed levels that much better. By contrast, NSMB has many movement options, which can make for an overall more interesting level. I should mention that there are some other differences, like how the two Bowser bosses attack, and what the goal is, but these are relatively minor. Still, as you can see each palette has several minor differences which leads to radically different level design - if used well of course.

I'm really trying to like Yahtzee in these videos; I really am, but he's making it so damn hard. I understand opinions and criticism and all, and I understand why he doesn't like it, and that would normally be fine with me, but his reasoning is just... awful. I legitimately don't know what he's trying to do with Zero Punctuation; if he's trying to be more of a comedian he just seems too mean-spirited towards Nintendo to make his humor noticeable, leaving just a giant wall of anger overshadowing his genuine comedic talent. His intro joke about gratitude would've made me genuinely laugh if it wasn't for the sheer contempt he has in his voice. If he's trying to be more of a critic, I'm sorry, but he's so wrong at points that it doesn't make his anger excusable. I realize *wrongness* is an flame-war magnet in this context, but I believe there are perfectly valid arguments to a lot of what he says in this video. I don't believe Nintendo is a perfect company either, but Yahtzee is giving it more shit than it deserves. Yes, they commoditize a lot of fandom's current systems, especially that of fan projects and ROMHacks, but 1) everybody that owns extremely popular IPs is guilty of this in any media; it sounds like he's singling out Nintendo as the only company that does this that warrants bitter hatred, and 2) not everybody is capable of spending years learning how to program their own Mario ROMhacks. It's not as expansive, but there's a much simpler learning curve that gives people something they want (and you can't say with the shitload of videos on KZbin right now spreading their own levels they don't), but won't alienate people in the same way people don't like taking programming courses or learning any second language. Not everybody has the prowess to make platformers in Visual Basic, you feel me? I mean I genuinely understand where he's coming from, but the rebuttal is really that simple, and could've saved him a lot of comments correcting him. It's not like the internet doesn't exist for this shit (yes I realize it's a little late for this video but you get my point, right?) And you know what? I wouldn't mind this as much if he wasn't clearly so bitter. Dissenting opinions is what makes the world go round at this point. He's free to dislike Nintendo as much as I think it's an alright company. To spread his angry viewpoint with such vitriol is understandable, but when you can easily debunk 90% of it with a few Google searches in less than 10 minutes, it becomes misaimed and annoying, so much so that it makes ME angry, especially since ads are enabled on this video. I wish I can rant blindly and denying bias for a living, I really do. But I thought we kind of moved past that sort of archaic thinking to greener pastures... but evidently Yahzee is apparently the exception. Fuck.

+Number Nine Yahtzee and Zero Punctuation stopped being about informing people and just being a shitty poor mans gaming version of Roger Ebert without any of what made Ebert so well liked and respected i.e. that he took every film he watched as a case by case study, could set biases aside, knew how to watch movies from the perspective of it's intended audience and rate them accordingly, and just REALLY loved movies and knew when to give his Thumbs Up. Yahtzee is just piss and vinegar with this shtick.

Mister Christmas Hyperbole? Calling EA some multitentacled freak that communicates with a finger puppet is hyperbole for comedic effect. Calling Nintendo a so-called friend that only wants to steal your money is more of a direct accusation out of bitterness towards the company, directly personifying it as a more relatable entity that's mean to incite *anger*. And yes, in that way Nintendo is worse than EA, but what makes it more forgivable overall I think for not just me, but for a lot of people is that for the most part they remember to be a *video game* company, not a monstrous soulless commodities dispenser, and have provided games that shows they actually give a shit about the reasons why their fans give a shit. Say what you will, but Splatoon and Smash Bros 4 have sunk well with their main demographic as well as some periphery demographics, mainly because they give what they want: actual quality and love. Yes, the let's play thing is fucking stupid and whoever's in charge of that should get a blow to the head, but it's better than trivializing video games from being potential artforms into commercialized dreck as a whole like EA, Capcom or Konami.

+Number Nine Oh god just look at what you are typing. Seriously - look at it. Nintento games as a whole are no MORE artforms than something like CoD - that's not how art works whether you like it or not. Just as a doodle in a notebook is just as much art as the Mona Lisa - except in this case BOTH have been made with the explicit purpose of extracting money from the consumer. Nintendo care about their fanbase as long as they are paying them; they have never displayed anything in their games which would make me say they care more about their games as an artform. Just because they use a childish, innocent style that doesn't mean their games have more artistic value. Nintendo are comparable to the corporate christmas which has been created - mass produced joy and artificial colours which is made to sell to the masses under the guise of something with a heart. But there are games which have real messages, games which are truly meaningful and those which are innocent. Nintendo is none of those things, Mario has been going on too long for it to be that and is still the same thing. Nintendo ARE commercialized dreck - please you have to understand that. They might not be an FPS but that means little - it's just a question of who they are pandering too. They are just cute commercialized dreck rather than violent commercialized dreck. I can honestly say that Splatoon is the only title they have made in recent memory which is even worth talking about in terms of a game which doesn't feel like they just spinning their money-making cogs, randomly selecting an IP and hitting go.
@Number9Robotic9 жыл бұрын
jessevb What I mean in regards to devaluing video games as an artform is one of substance, not message, and even then, I'm not saying Nintendo is exactly innovative either. My point is that Nintendo produce "bubblegum" video games. It's enjoyable and easy to absorb, but it's kind of a given you're not supposed to take it seriously, because beyond their family-friendly exterior, they are competent as a game developer. Not revolutionary, but not horribly regressive either. As I stated above, they're OK. They're harmless. They're not the fucking antichrist. And as for the whole issue of making money... that's kind of the nature of the industry now. They're a video game company; you can be all about the *art* of a game, but the bottom line is that money makes the world go round, and in an industry that makes more than movies nowadays, and the fact that developing games *is not free*, yeah, you're going to have to make some sacrifices. Yes, "art games" are much less about that, but that's not what Nintendo is about. Not every studio has to produce multiple "Spec Ops: The Line"s in order to be a good company.
