Super Mario Party Jamboree Looks BIG

If you're curious, Arlo, themeing was kind of a big thing for the Gamecube Mario Partys, both per board and then throughout the installments. The new ones feel very reflective of the Gamecube design philosophy which I think contributes to people taking to them so fondly.

Even the N64 ones to an extent! 2 at least was very much themed around, like, stageplays and like, themed parks and stuff with the characters wearing appropriate costumes in each board and there being these little plot hooks with Bowser terrorizing the area that the winner resolves in a cutscene (still the best way they've ever revealed the winner, having the awards presentation _interrupted_ by the plot hook and then giving an epic reveal shot to the winner as they come to SAVE THE DAY)- it was really fun haha

And not to rip on Super Mario Party Jamboree... but Mario Party 7 did do the island theme with the cruise ship main menu, and having the maps be destinations. Not to mention Mario Party Island Tour. It's cool that they're going with a theme, but it _is_ a theme they've done before.

Okay I need to talk about this but people aren't fully understanding the Koopwthalon mode it's not like a normal Mario party board with 20 players you basically play these tailored made for the mode mini games to collect coins to move as you get coins you run on the board and the mini games changed every few minutes this was from a 3DS Mario Party called Star Rush I just wanted to make that clear to people I love this mode btw

I bought mario party superstars because you can play the OG board game mode online with multiple switch systems if your friend has the game or in public lobbies. super mario party doesnt offer this feature and i feel like if jamboree offered it, they would advertise it :( i wont be buying jamboree if i cant play og board game online

I think you misuunderstood what koopathalon is. It seems to be a spiritual successor to Star Rush's Coinathon. The way you described it sounded like you were anticipating it to be more or less the same as a normal game of mario party but with 20 people. This doesn't seem right. If it is a successor to coinathon as it seems to be, you are just playing the same single player minigame at the same time (but separately) from the other twenty players. Based on how well you do in that game, how many coins you get etc. you move a certain number of spaces on the board. Whoever makes it to the end first or moves the most wins. Still a fun seeming mode but I think not as grandeous as you imagined. If nothing else it will be fine for online because the mini-game portions don't require systems to talk to eachother, just the board portions which can be as slow as they need.

I kinda took the "Super Mario Party" title thing to sort of now be its own series where they try out some wackier ideas and changes to the gameplay. The first Super Mario Party had an entirely different mode where you could free roam boards and collect minions to help you out in minigames, and now this one having 20 player mode and some other things that seem unusual for Mario Party. I'm excited for this game, especially because of how many boards we're getting.

One thing i would love to see from the series, is for them to launch a Mario Party platform, that new games more or less slot into. so you'd have a game, and then, the next game, and... if you have both, you can play any board from both from the later game, and any minigame from both from the later game, etc. maybe even every side mode.

Superstars internet works really well on my experience At worst I've seen it lag for a minute then disconnect a player. But it doesn't happen super often and if it does happen you can close the room then remake it with the same friends and the game will remember your previously unfinished game

I would love to see Duel Mode maps return in a future Mario Party. This was a mode exclusive to Mario Party 3 where two players are on a board with partners that you have to pay coins to every turn and they all have different abilities, strengths, and weaknesses; and you use those partners to attack your opponent as you pass by them on the map. It was a cool mode that I'm surprised was never brought back in future games.

I can imagine that Mario Party will still release on Switch even when the 2 is out, because it's a great casual series. What I'm expecting is that big Nintendo games, like new 3D Zelda or Mario, will release exclusively on 2, but select smaller games will release as Switch titles (that the 2 can still play). The Switch becomes the "handheld" whereas the 2 is takes the "home console" slot. I can't imagine they abandon the Switch install base anytime soon.

It feels messy playing with the three human princesses and a random Birdo or Toadette just because they’re female. Pauline is the fourth and final important Mario Princess type human character that perfectly evens out lobbies like you see them in Mario Tennis, Golf & Strikers where she was made playable.

I'm SUPER glad the motion stuff seems to be optional this time- not because I hate motion or anything, I just really don't want to be forced to play with a single joy con. I never got the original Super because of that restriction, and seeing people use single joy-cons again in the trailer killed a lot of my hype. Real glad there's pro controller support this time for (presumably) the vast majority of the game! Hype is back! :)

It sure is gonna be fun, but it feels like some people thought it’s gonna be close a full Mario Party experience with 20 players. As someone w/o friends, I haven't played a lot of Mario Party. I feel like they've never really had enough content though? Even 7 boards doesn't seem like it's that many. Would adding another 3 boards from the game's long history really be that unreasonable? It just feels like it should be taking cues from Mario Kart at this point. The series is long enough that every new entry feels like it could stand to bring back some beloved favorite game boards and mini games, just as Mario Kart (before Deluxe and the DLC) always remakes a couple tracks from previous games. Are they really putting so much effort into these games that adding a little more recycled content is too much to ask?

It's kinda wild to think that this is the first new mario party to bring back old boards. Sure superstars technically does too, but that one brings back old everything, that's the whole point. This is the first game that has tons of new content and is still using old boards, which is weird cause like... _pretty much every other mario game_ has already been doing this for ages. Mario kart has had retro tracks since the DS, smash bros brawl had melee stages, new 2D games reference 1-1, mario galaxy 2 had throwback galaxy, mario strikers charged had every field from the first game, the list goes on and on. Makes me wonder if there's any particular reason they never did it

You have a short memory. The fandom was constantly complaining about the "stale formula" and demanding that they try something a little different to change it up sometimes. Then Nintendo made the fatal mistake of doing *exactly* what fans asked for. Then suddenly it was all about the "classic formula" that was so cruelly being denied. (Even though MP9 was a lot like the original games in some ways.)

A note about the internet experience: It's only as good as the weakest link. Frequently, that link is either yourself or the server on the other side - however, that isn't always the case. Almost nobody has a direct physical connection to the server they are trying to access - the connection goes between a few in-between points. Usually those in-between points are pretty good, but that's not guaranteed, so if one of those in-between points has a bad connection - then you have a bad connection to Nintendo even if both you and Nintendo have good internet.

Jamboree looks like the definite step in the right direction the series needs after Superstars, you love to see Nintendo making good choices with their series! I hope MP3/the GCN boards get some love if retro boards are becoming a thing, 1 and 2 have been a bit over represented now (even if I'm excited to hear that Mario Rainbow Castle remix)

I haven't referenced the credits for games to confirm this, but I would not be surprised if Mario Party (and WarioWare) is a testing ground for rookie game developers at Nintendo. What better way to build your skills with game development than to make all these little mini games for people to play?

Never had any problems with Mario Party online (only played online in Superstars.) Very strange. Well except for the fact that people like to leave halfway through a match and you're stuck playing a computer. Sometimes. It had lag too but it never got anywhere near "unplayable." I have 160 hours in Superstars so that's surprising to hear it didn't work for Arlo.

This is the first Mario Party that looks like it’s trying to replicate that classic Mario Party feel in ages. Big, themed boards with lots happening on them-they seem to have finally steered things back to what people loved in the original entries on the N64 and Gamecube

I had mixed feelings on Super Mario Party and Mario Party Superstars, but Jamboree looks like it'll be the best of both worlds. A large roster again with playable enemies, motion control minigames, and a sizeable selection of maps. It's weird that we're getting 2 retro maps. It's an awkward number. But the maps look good overall!

I wish they’d bring in characters from the greater Mario universe into the games instead of pooling from Bowser’s minions. I can’t be the only one that wants to see Mona, Jimmy T., Crygor, and Ashley in 3D!

I'm glad we get new games and not DLC for older games! I prefer to move on from a game I played enough and have no desire to go back to an old game for DLC. Also having new games instead of DLC means new game mechanics and not just use the mechanics from old games again.

Now, I don’t say this to shoot you down, Arlo, but I would temper your expectations on the 20 player mini games because Koopathlon is very much not going to put a huge focus on that. But like, we do also see a 20 player mini game, so there will be some, but let me explain. Koopathlon looks very much like a return of the Coinathlon from Mario Party Star Rush, in which up to 4 players would play mini games to get coins, and each coin advances you one space on a race track. But the thing is, the regular mini games for the mode all focus on a player’s individual screen and there is minimal interaction. Like, you have a mini game collecting coins in a maze Pac-Man style, but you are alone aside from Boos that will reset you to start. But you can collect coins to get items, some of which will stall or mess up your opponent’s screen. But the thing is, every so often, there’s also events where Bowser shows up and makes you play a Bowser mini game that, if you lose, you get sent back depending on your standing in the game that all 4 players do physically interact. And that mechanic also seems to be back with the mini game where everyone is running away from Bowser. I don’t remember how many Bowser games Coinathlon had, but it definitely was not the hugest part of the mode, so I’m not predicting a huge amount of 20 player mini games. That said, this game looks amazing! It looks to have the quantity and quality in spades. In the other Mario Parties on Switch, they either banked too much on quantity over quality- having a lot of modes but not much to do in them (Super) or having a ton of mini games from the old games but not much to do besides the few boards the game had (Superstars). And don’t get me wrong, I loved Super Mario Party and Mario Party Superstars, moreso the latter. But I enjoy both as steps in the right direction, even if they fumble a step here and there, I think both are good. But this game has a nice 7 boards, when the series average was typically 6 in older games, all the boards look to have interesting gimmicks and special mechanics like the GameCube/8 era boards, the mini games we see look interesting, Coinathlon is back as Koopathlon and that is a personal favorite since I loved Coinathlon, and it looks like it has a lot of neat ideas on display, not lacking in either quality or quantity. This game really does look big, not just in being an impressive Mario Party, but just like it has A TON of content. And I’m super looking forward to it.

I REALLY am happpy to see they basically went full mario-kart with the character list on this and just gave us everyone. Cant wait to see teh full roster, cause there HAS to be more than just those 20 right? (atleast bowser was in a different place that implies hes playable)

As soon as they revealed the title to be *Super* Mario Party Jamboree I was slightly disappointed since I knew that meant Single Joy-Con gameplay was back even though Superstars let you use Pro Controller. Looks like it will be a fun time, though.

I figured that one of the reasons that they added “Super” in addition to the title of Mario Party, was to avoid awkwardly adding numbers to the home console Mario Party series. Otherwise, they would have called it Mario Party 11 instead of Super Mario Party. But now, they’re already adding subtitles like “Jamboree” to the name making it more confusing, rather than just calling it Super Mario Party 2. Oh well, at least the game looks like a blast.

Superstars had good mp imo. At least with my friends online I never experienced any lag or slowdown. I never matchmade with random people so maybe it does get worse when there are players with worse connections but yeah, from my experience it was the smoothest first party Nintendo online game on switch

It makes sense now how few stages the first games had. They really spread out the content between 3 games. Which is fine… we got Mario party spoiled in this generation.

Trying to do better leaving comments on vidyas for that KZbin Algorithm, but this was my "Metroid Prime" for me. (Well, that and M&L Brothership) Technically speaking, the last time we had 7 boards in a traditional Mario Party game was Mario Party 2, if that helps give you any idea of why 7 boards feels huge and exciting. While I enjoy the Mini Games in Super Mario Party, the board play was relatively weak, let alone the fact there was only 4 boards soured the experience. However-- it brought back the core classical gameplay, which was huge. It wasn't quite the same, but it was better than what we had received in the last few entries. The other aspect was that it tried having these extra modes, but they weren't as fleshed out. It was fun because it was the first "Classic" Mario Party we had in a while, but it was spread a bit too thin unfortunately. Then we have Mario Party Superstars, a title that I enjoy quite a bit, but I admit it wasn't *quite* as exciting for me due to everything being remade. While I don't think there isn't anything wrong with bring back boards or mini-games per se, part of the fun of a new Mario Party is seeing the new boards, experiencing the new mechanics, finding new Mini-games. Worst yet, if your one of 3 people like me who bought the Mario Party Top 100, 52 of the mini games from that mini game came back in Superstars, so it wasn't quite as fresh. Super Mario Party Jamboree--- it boasts 110 new mini games (The new highest amount), it has 5 new proper sized boards that looks like a lot of fun, along with 2 returning boards (which I LOVE this, it feels the equivalent of the Mario Kart Retro tracks). It finds a balance of bringing something fun, while bringing something familiar. I rarely ever had an issue with online matches in either Super Mario Party or Mario Party Superstars, and even if I did while playing with friends, we could quickly rejoin the room without having to start over. Obviously, we'll have to wait and see what all it has to offer, but I've been watching that trailer nonstop and looking forward to playing it with my friends!

Nintendo, this is the 5th time you've shown a bigger, bolder Mario Party. Seriously, it feels like every Mario Party since Top 100 on 3DS has been marketed in some way similar to "the most" or "the biggest" Is it just me?

Yeah, it does look fun! I do enjoy Mario Party, but I hopes this leans more towards Mario Party Superstars than the original Super Mario Party. I really hope we aren't forced to use Joycons in the main game and are given the option to use Pro Controllers instead. Also, if Dry Bones isn't playable...that's a 0/10 right there. 😋
