I like science AND ironing 💁. Nice haul Lauren, The Raqqa Diaries just went on my TBR!

Ahh that classic dichotomy, science and ironing! That made me giggle. I'll look forward to hear your thoughts on First Love, I heard it's the kind of book you need to be in the mood for. I've seen a few people haul the Cordelia Fine titles but no reviews as yet so I'm waiting to hear what people think before I dive in.

I love how you justify your purchases to yourself throughout - I do this too! Last week I had to convince myself it was ok to come back from a food shop with 2 new notepads, a book, and a graphic novel lol :)

If you're interested in reading about China from an economic AND social perspective, I recommend a book called Beijing Confidential by Jan Wong. Jan is a journalist, raised in the US who, as a teenager, went to study in China and while under the spell of Maoism informed on a fellow student who asked her about emigration. She forgot all about this until she was writing her first book about China and went back to try to discover what happened to the girl. Really great read (and this is coming from someone who doesn't read non fiction).

I *loved* Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls (splurged and got three copies--two for kids, and one for me.. so glad I got one for me! You may find you'll be reading more than one a night...... but yeah, amazing variety!!! Inspiring women from all time periods, of all ages, from all countries

Recently bought Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls exactly for that reason: to give to my friend who's a mum of two beautiful daughters! But of course, first I'm reading it myself, so it's kinda a secondhand gift :-) The Raqqa Diaries sounds really interesting and heartbreaking at the same time, looking forward to your review.

Alas, I have found it now lol. I can already tell that I am going to find some new amazing reads to fill my shelves. Hooe you and your partner are both well and that you have an amazing Christmas. I listened to The power on audible. I thought the story was good but it took a long time to world build. I also thought there were maybe one too many characters, anyway see what you think! I've just started a BookTube channel and am loving it - where would you recommend finding such quirky books? You have a really unusual, interesting and varied reading diet!
@LaurenWade7 жыл бұрын
Welcome to booktube! :) I honestly think just subscribing to lots of different booktubers and having a poke around independent bookshops is a great start when it comes to diversifying your reading! xx

This is just a recommendation for yet another book but if you like Chinese non-fiction, I would recommend One Child: The Story of China's Most Radical Social Experiment by Mei Fong. It's all about the One Child policy and how it came about. It's really interesting and I wish she would've gone into more detail but it sounds like something you might like too. c:

What does shortlisted and longlisted mean? I am not a native English speaker and I am confused.😅
@LaurenWade7 жыл бұрын
They're terms used in literary prizes, so the judges will release a longlist of say 12-15 books, and then a few months later narrow this down to a shortlist of around 6 books before the ultimate winner is announced :)
