Great vid and love the R-Type games. This one is close to my heart but I feel like R-Type 3 was the better game and didn't suffer from as much slow down. But both games a great! Awesome work man!

True confession: I've never actually owned a copy of R-Type III for the SNES. I did play it back in the day, and I recall it being SIGNIFICANTLY better than Super R-Type. But I'll have to see if I can get hold of it to give it the once over on the channel. Glad you enjoyed this one!

They should had added in multiple checkpoints within each levels to make the extreme high difficulty fair. Having to redo the entire level again is frustrating when you lose.

Another great video! I don’t think I’ve ever played Super R-Type. I’d love to collab on something some time ;)

Thanks, fella! It's worth a look, I guess, but like I say in the video, it's a low point in the series. So probably not worth moving Heaven and Earth to get hold of. Where collabs are concerned, I'm actually working up some ideas about how to tackle those kinds of videos. We're following each other on Twitter, so I could always DM you there with something one I've polished things up a bit, if you like?

Great video, but it's also affirmed my long-standing anger at this game. I've been playing R-Type since the ZX Spectrum and I remember booting this up and being blown away by the graphics. But that death cycling - returning all the way to the start every time. No continues. Just... Why? Why would you do this to me? To this day, I've never got past level 3.

As an aside, I think R-Type Leo is highly underrated. Would love to see what you think of that if you've yet to cover it.

@@RoseTintedSpectrum - OOOH! R-Type Leo... them's fighting words all by themselves! I'm not a fan of Leo. Just because it seems to me to be less of an R-Type game and more a straight ahead shooter. I haven't logged a lot of time on it, I have to admit, but my gut feeling when I've had a spin on it has been that it feels like a mis-step in the franchise. It IS interesting, though. I'm undecided as to whether I want to do any coin-op stuff on the channel, but if I ever do, it's definitely worth taking another look at.

Thanks, Quang! I think R-Type is special to a lot of us. It's (usually) a nice throwback to a time when games weren't afraid to smack us in the face and say 'is that the best you can do?!' I'm definitely wanting to do more R-Type stuff on the channel in future. Odds on I'll get around to covering R-Type III at some point!

@@hdestotallyunoriginalgamin3555 The beauty of R-Type is the level design, the art direction and the whole aesthetic of the game. Every moment had me on edge.

Really good video as always. Though I enjoy the game, I can totally agree with all your points. The slowdown is particularly irksome, though that's an issue for most SNES shooters, it's cpu was woefully underpowered when compared with rival systems. Rtype 3 is definitely better. Kudos for mentioning Final on PS2, an excellent game, that I just sold to Octav1us, so maybe she'll be featuring it in a video soon? (Or she just wanted to play an awesome shooter! 😀 )
@hdestotallyunoriginalgamin35555 жыл бұрын
Cheers, Sam! This game is so maddeningly frustrating - not just in literal terms, but because it's the kind of thing I find myself wanting to love, but just can't. It's just represented so much better elsewhere. I do remember the SNES playing host to some silky smooth shooters, although early ones were certainly plagued by similar problems. Weird how, in some cases, slowdown feels excusable, while in others it's unforgivable! I seem to recall Ocatv1us saying she really enjoys these kinds of games. R-Type Final is STELLAR - she's going to have a whale of a time with that one! My copy's likely going to be buried with me!

@@hdestotallyunoriginalgamin3555 Yeah, sadly as you've probably seen a good friend of mine has fallen on very hard times, so I'm selling half of my collection to help her and her family this Christmas. Needs must, I can always rebuy in the future. Its definitely one of the best R-Type games for sure. I think part of the reason I'm forgiving of the SNES games flaws is because it was a launch title, and therewfore I remember being excited about the hype around it, but by the time I got my own SNES (Xmas 94) it was pretty cheap to pick up. Of course there are some stellar shmups on the SNES, but it really wasn't a system designed to play them well - don't want to go on about it but to this day I'll never understand the logic of putting such a crappy CPU in an otherwise VERY powerful hardware setup for the time. If it had the 68000 clocked at the same speed as the Megadrive (which was 2-3 years older!) or Amiga 500 (which was 4-5 years older!), or even better a 68EC020, which was new but reasonably affordable at the time, it could have competed with the NeoGeo for around half the price. I read somewhere that the CPU chouce was to give backwards compatibility with the NES, which iof course was never actually used as a feature. Sigh.

Yeah - Nintendo sure do make some weird decisions when it comes to hardware. I remember reading something on the Digitiser2000 website about them being the only hardware manufacturer that doesn't sell their consoles at a discounted price. It made me wonder, given how even the Switch is regarded as 'underpowered,' just how they go about budgeting the production of their stuff. And, because it deserves to be said in public, kudos to you for helping your friend out like that. It's an awesome gesture, and youve gone into it with an admirable attitude.

Thanks, man. Yep, this one's a real disappointment when it comes to how sloppily contrived the difficulty of it is. Even playing this one to capture the video for it was a bit of a chore at times. Note to self: next time I decide to mention a specific feature of a later level in a REALLY hard game that I haven't already captured footage for... maybe don't.
