@yellowblanka6058

@@marksaile6419 I can think of more than a few arcade games with noticeable slowdown on the original hardware - the Metal Slug series (moresoe the earlier games, the later games generally run better) and Double Dragon were particularly good examples of this. Arcade hardware was generally far more powerful than home consoles, but developers could still push it a bit far/release not-so-optimized code on arcade boards.

@@yellowblanka6058 True. I actually thought it was a feature in these games like the slow mo in the movies or like bullet time effect in Max Payne and other shooting games.

@@nayyarrashid4661 Well, it does give you a bit more reaction time in those hectic moments. It was definitely a side-effect from arcade devs trying to get their games noticed by being more and more bombastic - even arcade hardware has limits to how much it can process and still update at 60hz.

I love this thing! I know LESS about computers, programming, gaming, etc, than anyone else in the ENTIRE WORLD. And even I have loaded nearly 2,000 classic games on SD cards and play them with a Super Retro-cade. There's even a joystick controller that's readily available and works on the Super Retro-cade right out of the box. Which is great because I can't stand those Nintendo style controllers. Thanks for the review and for helping me get on the retro gaming bandwagon! Semper Fi!

I've had my Super Retrocade since June, 2018 and it has worked like a champ. I've got a library of HUNDREDS of classic games with artwork saved on SD cards. Ditched the D-pads for a pair of Sanwa JLF-8YT USB joysticks and buttons which was simple with the KZbin tutorial. That thing is an incredible value! The only issue I have is that it won't play games that originally used vector graphics. Just using roms from the late 70's to 1989 I've got about 700 games saved on SD cards. The retro gaming forums were there EVERY time I had a problem or a question when I was getting started with ROMS, artwork, and upgrading the controllers.

"GeoNeilUK no, the Libretro team specifically disallow these kinds of products" And the GPL means they can't do jack shit about it. "they had Sen Pi take it out and the Seedi guys really pissed them off using it as well." Who cares? It's under the GPL, thay can't stop them from using it. "Their stance is it should never be used as a commercial product." So why did they licence it under the GPL? It wouldn't be to get a load of programmers working on it for them for free, now would it? Programmers that might not have worked on it had there been restrictions on commercial use? *REEEEEEEEEEE* all you want about businesses using open source software in their products (and isn't it strange that RetroArch only seem to go after small startups?) but the GPL *allows* that.

I used MAME ~20 years ago, and you definitely weren't playing all those games "perfectly" on a Pentium 3, and that was even taking into account that the MAME version back then was WAY less accurate than the more modern versions. MAME has gotten more accurate, and thus, more demanding over time.

@@Imgema and mobile/Raspberry Pi etc. releases of MAME are just as out of date because they don't have the CPU horsepower for the more accurate emulation in newer builds of MAME. Regardless, my point stands that early MAME versions were anything but "perfect" when it came to emulation, I know, I used them - this was a time when just emulating these arcade games at ALL was exciting. Slowdown, graphical glitches, sound skipping and mandatory frame skip were the order of the day.

This review underestimated the Super Retrocade badly and what it's really capable of. This device is awesome especially if you have a dual arcade stick. I legally own hundreds of Nintendo, Sega, Atari, and other 80's and 90's arcade games. I put all the games I own in rom form. It's much better than my emulation station/retroarch combo on my laptop. More options and better compatibility. Plus I can play everything through smooth hdmi and full screen on my curved monitor and plug in some gaming speakers. I also put everything from my Famicom Mini on it. Awesome device.

If you mod the hell out of it, and use a bunch of peripherals and accessories that didn't even come with it, sure, it's great. But at that point, you're not even using the device. Also the NES Classic obviously has to upscale, too, so that's a good example as well. I actually think that the blurred upscale is better. Pixels never were too sharp on real oldschool hardware. Even if the transfer to the CRT would have been perfect (which it wasn't), the CRT itself would round pixels and blur things a bit. Many games look quite frankly pretty horrible with sharp pixels, in my opinion.

Great news about the system being much better than the Generations!! Was excited to hear about the release of this one but was nervous after getting the Generations. Still preordered it the Retrocade now just waiting till next Friday to get mine. Any news on the DLC or firmware updates they mentioned in their latest press release?

Great review. I wonder how well it plays classic late 70's-early 80's arcade games. And I wish they would have included the ability for it to play roms from older consoles like the Atari 2600 and 7600, Colecovision and Intellevision.

Those games were horrible and are best placed in our memory; my introduction to Atari was 'Adventure'. Today its unplayable. I wanna remember it like a kid, as 'the best game I'd played'.

Those companies officially licensed their arcade titles to be sold on a system that also includes pirated console games? I find that very surprising.

Did Retro-bit ask for permission to use RetroArch? I recognize that save state font at the bottom. I have a lot of doubts on the licensing of that.

The GPL does not prohibit commercial use. From the emulation shown here... NES emulation is GPL'd, RetroArch packs in a GPL'd core (FCEUmm) Arcade emulation is GPL'd, RetroArch packs in a GPL'd core (several versions of MAME) I don't know that console the console version of Mercs is, if it's the SNES, then AFAIK the only GPL'd emulator that can do SNES is MAME (as MESS) though I've personally never used MAME for that, I preferred it when MESS was a separate project.

When did Nintendo ever make a black console?
@marksamson9702

GeoNeilUK, N64 was dark grey, almost black if I remember correctly. There was a black model of GameCube, the Wii and Wii U. The Switch is also mostly dark grey or black.

"GeoNeilUK, N64 was dark grey, almost black if I remember correctly." There were several coloured models of the N64, the most common colour being grey, not black. "There was a black model of GameCube" There were several coloured models of the GameCube, the most common colour being purple. "the Wii and Wii U." Whose white models are far more common, especially the Wii. "The Switch is also mostly dark grey or black." First proper example. Being lightly coloured or even white has never stopped Nintendo being successful, in fact their most successful consoles (NES, SNES, Wii) were lightly coloured (as I said, the white Wii was far more common than the black Wii) and out of those three the SNES (at least the European/Japanese SNES) was the best looking.

I saw on another video there is a way to play other games via the SD card. Also I'm hoping the internal hardware on the Dreamcade is identical to the Generations. That way maybe us Generations owners that were disappointed can hopefully upgrade at some point.

How can you play games like Heavy Barrel & Midnight Resistance which both used the rotary joystick? Is there a special rotary joystick usb controller that you can buy to play all those rotary joystick games on MAME like Ikari Warriors, Victory Road, etc.?

I got this 8 months ago and haven't had the time to get around to playing it until recently. It's a bit odd. Some of the games like R Type are I think the arcade version as it's a lot better than the much touted PC Engine version so I actually liked that considering I thought I was a person who didn't like R Type BUT there are a fair number of games on this thing that clearly don't run or present themselves right. Crude Buster, Burger Time and Renegade are a few of the games I have noticed experiencing bad slowdown or terrible controls. I also have a NES clone system on a chip that has a few of the games that have popped up on this which is good as the Super Retrocade's versions are presumably licensed correctly. I'm not a hacker type and accept these mini consoles for what they are but I really don't know why someone would want to go to the bother of hacking this as there are presumably more sleeker menu systems, emulators and controllers on other mini consoles for those who are seeking that type of thing. It's a bit cheap feeling with its on screen presentation and some of the games are too niche. I'm not trying to put anyone off but it's looking the least appetising of all the plug and play"s I've had. The amount of vertical orientated shmups on it where the screen ratio is too slim to play with any sort of enjoyment is a real letdown also. Stretched to full screen is worse for those games. I'll persist and I'll probably get used to it but first impressions are a bit of a letdown to say the least.
