Cow Catcher is designed and angled to cause animals on the track be pushed to the side instead of causing the train to derail. Back when coaches were made of wood, in a wreck they would “telescope” together, like taking a spyglass and sliding it together. This is what caused the massive loss of life in train wrecks as seven or eight coaches were collapsed together into a space the size of one, the coal stoves starting fires, and the wood tearing people apart. Between the life of a cow or deer hitting a replaceable cow-catcher or having to pay damages to hundreds of families of victims of a train wreck caused by hitting said cow or deer, the use and cost of having it is pretty clear… they don’t so much “catch” the cow, though, as simply push it out of the way.

Must be some really strong cows to have caused all that
@susanna64622 жыл бұрын
@@FoxDog1080 cows are very big and dense animals. Longhorns can weigh up to 1000lbs. When you hit a deer straight on (which maybe weighs up to a couple hundred lbs) in your car going 60mph you can easily total the front of your car and kill the driver. Imagine hitting a bigger and denser animal like a fully grown cow. And if they have horns. Can easily damage wood, would probably destroy your car too. And when cows used to roam more freely, imagine hitting several or dozens of cows while moving quickly along a track. Trains couldn’t stop quickly or even start breaking that they could avoid hitting cows point blank. So the shoveling shape helps push the cows out of the way as it moves forward instead of hitting it straight on which limits the damage and movt of the train from the track

Cow catchers are still part of locomotives today. Mowing down a herd of cattle occasionally happens. It takes about a mile or so to fully stop a loaded freight train on a main line, so the catch helps clear the track from being fouled, preventing a potential derailment. Old locomotives had more of a problem with this because their forward field of view was more obstructed

cow catchers were implemented on trains in the mid west, as herds or bison would often gather on the tracks and could derail the train if it went over one. Bison were also so plentiful that hunts would be conducted from the train as pest control rather than for the meat.

@@sayori3939 tbf consider that said animals had nvr expd trains before in most cases. And at the time, rails werent nearly as desolate as they are now (which ofc dmgd the tracks) esp bcuz the American style of rail constructin was to just throw it on the ground as fast as possible and keep goin til ya hit civilisation and then do that again towards somewhere else. They didnt have time to stop and consider things like how to keep grass from growin between the tracks, let alone safety like fences. A cow is merely ignorant of what that noise means and knows from exp with wagons and even with horses and everythin it has ever encountered, unless its gone for a swim in the ocean and got hit by a steamship, that any object barreling towards it will stop rather than hit it bcuz the object will take far more dmg than they will. Ya may have missed where i said cows often weigh upwards of 1000 kg; thats a literal ton. Thats around the avg weight. Cow doesnt know train is threat, cow knows the grass on the tracks is grass not yet grazed by other cows, or maybe even sees other cows grazin; thus, cow grazes on tracks not even remotely expectin a threat. And then suddenly massive locomotives capable of crushin cows beneath their tires (and thus derailin the trains btw, bcuz shocker; cow is still not the only loser in this fight, bcuz cow is tough) begin appearin and it takes a while for cows to figure out that trains are a threat. By the 20th century tho most cows were either aware that the tracks were deadly and/or saw plenty of similarly deadly things; but also cuz still... Cows are tough, ranchers began securin cows better to protect from shit like bein sued for destroyin someones tractor with their cows walkin onto a road. Also, to attempt to keep vagrants from jumpin onto trains, railways began installin more fencin. All in all, the cows are just not given the option nowadays but are also generally not unaware of the threat and wud avoid such regardless.

Yes, it is called a cow catcher, but its purpose was to push cows, sheep, buffalo and the like off the tracks, not splatter them, as they posed a risk to the locomotive. The "coal car" as the game calls it, is actually called a tender and held both coal and water.
@mistermanthe4th2 жыл бұрын
You ever watch old 1930's-40's cartoons? Almost any time they had a locomotive in the show, there was a cow on the tracks blocking the path in some hilarious fashion. In particular, there was a Looney Tunes cartoon where Porky Pig was racing an old beat-up steam locomotive against a sleek diesel train, and a bull rushing up the tracks and heabutting the locomotive across the finish line was the deciding factor.
@mistermanthe4th2 жыл бұрын
I also checked the devlogs for this update, and they mentioned that in order to represent each map accurately, they basically have to become experts overnight as to the names for each object. Now THAT is some attention to detail.

Note on cow catchers on trains; they arent designed for pushin cows at max speeds of our time, but were instd designed at a time when trains moved much slower than modern trains do (up to 23kmph/50mph) and if a cow were spotted on the track they cud even slow down (tho often they didnt, esp as trains got faster; thankfully cows got less prone to wander onto tracks and fences got used more to keep them out as trains got much faster and splattered cows much more visceral) and hit the cow more gently and prod it off the track. Remember that cows are literally sturdier than brick walls and weigh hundreds of kilos, or twice that in lbs. Now, does it catch a cow if movin at high speeds? Yes, and its a rly good thing it does bcuz unexpectedly hittin a 1000 kg animal with a train cud dmg the train otherwise (Spec the worry is of the cow goin under the train and causing a derailment, hence the design bein to lift them up and away from the middle of the tracks). The cow catcher is just extra metal on the front that can take such a blow, or more commonly in modern times, can hit a car and push it aside rather than have it smash into the train and dmg the train parts. Notably this also works to increase survivability rates of folks hit by trains as theyre much more likely to have their vehicle pushed aside rather than crumpling completely into the train (Esp if a train operator spots them early and begins to slow down in time to decrease impact speed). The cow issue is no longer the primary concern of such trains tho, with cars bein the much more common object found on tracks in modern days, but it used to be very common for grazin cattle to graze across train tracks. Bonus Note: Train operators at the time tho didnt call these cow catchers and that was a laymans term for what those workin the rails wud simply call the pilot. Bonus Bonus Note: Europeans found a diff solution to stop cows from gettin hit by trains and Europeans who visited USA at the time often balked at the foolery of the Americans to opt for such a brutal solution when their trains had a much safer and much simpler solution that didnt involve adding any weight to their trains. Youve probs guessed it alrdy... They built fences. Yep, a fence keeps the cow away from the front of a train even better than a cowcatcher; xD Bonus Bonus Bonus Note: The early invention that eventually got replaced by the cowcqtcher was literally a lance. Trains used to joust cows.
@thetato12732 жыл бұрын

@SylviaRustyFae2 жыл бұрын
Final Extra Bonus Note: Theres one story of a train carryin mail that managed to catch a lucky cow on its cowcatcher and carry them all the way to the depot. This lucky cow had landed on a flat area (cowcatchers originally were longer and flatter; but they were also less effective bcuz of that and cud catch mangled cows on them and thus force them to stop the train when hittin one in the dead of night with no warning). And accordin to the articles at the time, said cow was returned to where they belonged; which is just vague and cryptic enuf to leave me wonderin if they meant returned to that cows original farmer or not xD

Another, probably more important reason for the "cow catcher" was a defense against train robbery. Bandits would pile logs and debris, even a buffalo or two that they killed specifically for the purpose, on to the track to force the train to stop. The rakes that were added to early engines were sturdy enough to plow through fairly large blockades. They had the added use in the north of pushing snow out of the way, also.

A CowCatcher, Also Known As a Cattle Catcher or Pilot, is a structural sub-assembly, typically mounted on the front beam of 1800s era steam looks. The furnace of the locomotive is actually called a firebox which burns coal or wood to make a fire which heats up the water in the boiler evaporating it and making steam. The game just got the name wrong. The pilot is the pilot wheels which guide the train along and keeps the front of the train from bouncing around, along with the trailing wheels which keeps the back of the locomotive from bouncing around.

5:13 Yes, when trains were first invented in the mid 1800s, lots of issues occurred, such as branches or other things falling onto the tracks and derailing trains. More commonly, livestock would wonder onto the tracks. Most of the time these were cows. (Hence the name.) This would cause the death of the animal, making farmers angry. The locomotive would ram into these issues, causing the invention of the cow catcher. It would push the animal or debris out of the way. This was also great for farmers, because if the train slowed down enough for the animal, it might live to see another day. Trains today still have cow catchers, but are now commonly referred to as a debris guard to prevent branches from clogging the wheels. (the solid cow catchers also help with clearing snow.) Hopefully I got my facts right.

Also yes the cow catcher is in fact called the cow catcher And its purpose is to move cows off of the tracks because cows are actually large enough to do some serious damage to a train and honestly they're kind of too dumb to get off the track so it's better just to put this plate of metal in the front synthesis push him off the track typically the cow is mostly fine
@augustbilliau123212 жыл бұрын
The reason its called a "cow catcher" is because back when steam was used for a lot than just boiling water, there were a lot a cows near railroads and the cow catcher prevents the cow from getting ran over by the train. Also, the wheels are called bogies, trucks ,and wheels. Not rail wheels.
