This popped up in my “must watch list” so I watched it. From 1988 through the mid 90s I went to every NASCAR race at Pocono. Never any of the sports car or motorcycle races, though. I knew there was a road course in there, but I wasn’t familiar with it, just knew it was run backwards. When you started lap 2 and hit that car exiting the pits, I think I laughed for three minutes. Your reaction was so good I watched it a few more times. Thanks for the laugh!

"Normal person"? That was uncalled for. Anyways, while there are more oval circuits in America than road circuits, it comes down to cost and resources for the most part. It's much cheaper to build a half mile or one mile circuit than it is to build a 3-6 km road course. I suppose, from the outside looking in, it's easy to think that Americans are more interested in oval racing than road racing. Though, from my (completely anecdotal) experience, I see more Americans interested in road racing than oval racing.

@@Ewane I'd say Abu Dhabi for example is quite easy to make better (get rid of the stupid chicane before the hairpin, instead of the chicane after the 2nd DRS straight you could have a beautiful sweeper...)

When you see those (ro-)vals and their hilariously bad attempts at embedding a road course layout while remembering that tracks like Watkins Glen, Laguna Seca, Road Amerika, Road Atlanta and Riverside exist(*cough*existed*cough*), one wonders how that happens in the same country. Where oval fans and road course fans probably won't understand each other.

David Jundt There’s some overlap between the two; NASCAR has a handful of road races. The Cup series on Sonoma and Watkins Glen, XFinity series on Road America and Mid-Ohio, and Truck Series on Mosport. Pretty good lineup if you ask me. In other words, oval fans usually at least have some general idea of road racing,

That turn 1 was very different in the 70’s to early 80’s. It originally went into a short track oval and rejoined after turn 2. It has been run both directions . I think IMSA ran it counter clockwise. Eliminated that pit exit issue and there was no chicane on the back straight.

Robert Tarbox Jr I think COTA isn't that bad of a Racetrack. The worst Part that needs to go is that "Hockenheim-Section" after the Backstraight. And there are too many artificial overtaking Zones. 4 Times a Heavy braking Zone with a tight lefthand Hairpin and a really, really wide Apex.
