Just what I am looking for. My moss is out of control, and I own a clone one of those filters. I fear it could be harder for me as my aquarium has over a hundred baby guppies, and they attack the moss as I trim it.

Definitley stealing this trick, couldn't have been more timely. I've been putting off the maintenance of a new moss project for the very same reasons you highlighted. Just been looking around, and think I will try and adapt a cheap All Pond Solutions hang-on external filter. Thanks so much for sharing. 👍

great video and hopefully can inspire others too! I'm new to aquascaping (around 5 months), but I use this trick with my spare canister filter since I keep turtle in a tank, the best part is you can use this trick anytime to clean all debris without wasting any water.
@vanissaberg58242 жыл бұрын
Very cool idea! You can also spot clean sand or gravel vac the substrate with something like that without draining your tank water in between your regular maintenance. Imagine your goldfish did a massive poop and you don't want any guest to see it, so you can whip out the little vacuum, stick it on your tank and have your tank looking spotless in minutes! 😎

Try the Eden 501 gravel cleaner. Same thing, but I feel like it’s a simpeler system and easier to clean after use. Sometimes it cost a few minutes to get the air out the system (just let it run), but when it does, it does it’s job very well!

I had a similar filter lying around and had been struggling with maintenance, your video literally saved my life now I do it almost daily 🤣👍🏻👍🏻 Oh and I use it for water change too with longer pipes and just hang it there. 😃 PS: I didn’t suck the hose like your ending bloopers, I simply fill the pipe and filter full with water and turn it on haha

Good stuff, man! Appreciated you checking for any sucked up shrimp too. I'm going to try this. Don't stress that English is a second language. You are cool, Mark - I am embarrassed to know only one language (although, I do know a little Bahasa). I saw this too on Green Aqua, sort of.

Great trick here. I think I might make something similar with simple filter floss so I can vacuum away debris and waste in poor circulation areas. The junk is gone and I don’t lose water before I do my major/minor water changes. Your content is great but the bloopers are better than the content 😜😜

The EDEN 501 is a filter that can be used as a Vacuum cleaner as well. By the way sometimes it can be sold like that. No need to do adaptation. It's a good idea anyway. Cheers

I tried different techniques with moss, and tried something similar, some times the trimmed part stuck in the hose.... Anyway, now I only glue moss on a removable objects , so when it's time to trim it I just take the wood or stone off the tank, trim it outside and I may glue some of the trimmed parts and then put back again inside the tank

this is a great idea, and i love how it does not lower the water levels like siphoning... trimming HC cuba and montecarlo is also a pain in the butt, even though it floats, it seems impossible to get it all after a deep trimming

I've been thinking about making something like this for a long time. For lite surface gravel vacuuming. And vacuuming detritus off plants & such. I'm surprised that none of the major manufacturers have designed a device like this. I think it would be a popular seller. Maybe I'll suggest it to them & see if I can get something started ..

Salut , Oui , cool ! 😉😎

Hi, and thanks for your videos as usual. I think I have another way to clean moss. It's using an Automatic Sand Gravel Cleaner with a Sponge Filter or sock bag attached to the outflow. I've ben doing this for years. The only downside is that the vacum motor should be completely immersed, but it depends on the model. You may have to add a small hose at the end of the inflow in order to have the same effect without the bulckiness of the filter. Cheers !!!

Hi. I like your idea to trim the moss. Just a curious question since I don’t have a canister filter or else I would try it. Why can’t we just use the canister filter inlet directly to suck the moss?
@MrDoldora2 жыл бұрын
Just saw the bloopers so.. 😄😄😄 Now.. i did use something similar, an external pump, connected to a prefilter. But i never thought i could use it for trimming moss. Thanks for the tip, it comes in handy for my next scape. String algae is a good candidate for this..BBA clumps, cyanobacteria maybe. The downside, spores will be released. But with an UV sterilizer for a few hours...should be fine. Right?
@MJAquascaping2 жыл бұрын
Should be fine indeed!

You can add those long tubes from a syphon, than you can vaccuum the sand and gravel with it. I might gonna do this, but i have seen a cheap knock off from this filter. Gonna use that one.

Why not just use a piece of tube/syphon whilst doing a W/C? You trim the moss which would go into a bucket and you control the syphon with your thumb over the end of the pipe. Seems like a simpler solution?

You shouldn't dispose of aquarium plants and whatever is in them like that. Personally, i dry them out and use them to 'fertilize' my potted plants and even then I've had some of them grow in the pots from dried out cuttings.

Great hack, but aquatic plants cuttings should never be released in the water system, but disposed of responsibly in the bin or composted. They are all potentially invasive and can ruin fragile ecosystems.
