Super Simple Nalbinding Round-Start by Karin Byom

This is a super simplified way to make a round-start in Nalbinding / Needle-binding. You can use any nalbinding stitch you like, though the amount of stitches you'll need for it to lay flat will vary.
It's a quick video to show how to make the round-start, and I don't have a continuation video yet but I'll happily refer you to Neulakintaat here on KZbin or her website www.en.neulakintaat.fi

So glad it could help! This is the simplest round-start I know of... it's basically just a reconstructed slipknot start :)

Oh wow, thank you, that looks much easier, I've made loads but I start at the hem and gradually decrease, so I thought I'd have ago at this

Would that work with the Oslo stitch?

Yes, it works with all stitches... though the amount of stitches you will need to start with will vary due to your gauge.

I'd start with a wrist warmer / or a cup warmer. Oslo is a great stitch to start with if you have thicker yarn. This is a round start, so if you're comfortable with increasing (like in crochet) you could make a hat from top-down.

Hi, I saw on Instagram that you made a triangle shawl starting in the round, and was wondering if you could do a tutorial on how to make one? Like how many stitches to start with and where to increase on the 3 points?

Hi- I'll add it to my list :) I started with about 15-21 or something like that (depending on the stitch) and increased about 3-4 times in each "corner." Enough to keep it flat. I think I brought it with me in the UFO bag so I can finish it. I've been meaning to do a tutorial on that one for awhile. A triangle is a bit trickier than a round because you have to increase enough in the corners to keep it flat.

I like how you use a yarn needle to pick up and gather the foundation chain into a circle. But then your hands keep going off screen and I cannot follow what you are doing with the needle on the second row. Have you perhaps rerecorded this video and show the stitching on screen better?

Thanks! It’s a weaver’s needle which is about twice as along as a darning needle. I love that needle for thin yarn and dense stitches. I can try to remake this video. I have a phone mount now. For this one, I had to rest my phone on the edge of a stool and wrap my arms around the leg making jt difficult to see what was being filmed. It’s a spiral, so the second row just continues around over the tops of the stitches. However you’ll have to start increasing now. This is done by making two stitches each into the loops from the previous row. I have a stitch-a-long on my Instagram account ( @karin_byom ) “Shall we Nalbind a Round-Start Hat Together?” That may better show the 2nd row onwards.

Why for the love of the gods can I never remember that I need to pull the tail through to make a circle. Been nålbinding for a nearly a year now and every time I forget. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️
