He tried to remove as much of the music as possible so the Mr. Game & Watch sound effects would show up more. Only the 3DS version kept the music, maybe for in-game limitations or because he couldn't get the footage otherwise.

Ironically he did change alot, in Smash 4 he got a thinner shape and new animations, and then alot of those were yet again replaced in Ultimate.
