Super Smash Ultimate vs Super Smash WiiU | Direct Comparison

For people feeling the need to remind people "It's not a port" I never once said it was a port. But it absolutely borrows a ton of assets from the WIiU title, as do most sequels to most major video game franchises. And it undoubtedly was intended to be a port of Super Smash WiiU for the Nintendo Switch, just like many other titles on the Switch, but they looked at it and decided to do something more with it, adding in an exhaustive amount of new content, reworked gameplay mechanics, new modes, etc. So is it a port? Not any more than a new Madden game is each year. Either way, I make comparisons between sequels all the time, so it really doesn't matter what it is.

Actually Smash ultimate has 82 characters and 108 stages with dlc+piranha plant. PS: There's a total of 1013 soundtracks in the game + the dlc tracks, also wii u version had 56 characters with dlc

The game simply runs on the same engine, so it seems similar. But, since smash 4 had struck almost the perfect balance when it came to gameplay and art style choices, it's obvious that ultimate would follow in a similar graphical style and gameplay style.

Either way, saying Ultimate is a port of Smash 4 because of reused models and assets is like saying Majora's Mask is a port of Ocarina of Time because it reused the same engine and many assets. These similarities do not make them some remaster or port. They provide different experiences for starters. Smash Ultimate feels more satisfying to me, has a story mode completely built from scratch, every freaking fighter plus, and customizations up the wazoo, among many other things. I much prefer this to Smash 4 so far.

I think Donkey Kong's new design looks good and I like it more than the old one. The hair just way to messy and gross to me before. Also, I think the reason they removed shadow from the background of the Xenoblade stage is to bring attention back to the foreground. I always you found that stage kinda hard to look at and my vision got lost all over the place. Maybe removing background shadows and making it blend in more was an attempt to solve that issue.

The thing is that I think the Wii U looks more like actual fur. But the Ultimate version is "technically" better, because its shaded, which means the shadows will adjust depending of DK position at all times. As opposed to the Wii U's DK, where it just had a bunch of flat, transparent textures placed one on top of the others.

Ignoring the "port" arguments in the comment section, I was disappointed in this video because it isn't exactly what it says on the tin. Instead of going over different changes you're instead focusing on visual design aspects, which opinion or not, you should have some stated credentials before you talk about that stuff. Lower textures, shading, and polygons does not equal bad 100% of the time. This is especially true at 4:24 where you judge Xenoblade stage for its background, ignoring the fact that from a visual design perspective Ultimate's is superior because its values don't muddy up the foreground and get confusing like they used to. In fact, the overall image is much more appealing when details are taken out because detail does not equal good when it's in the wrong places. *INSTEAD* the detail is in the foreground, which is *good* and objectively better from an artistic perspective as well as a gaming one. Not trying to be a dick about it, just trying to help.

This is just an opinion, but I'm not a huge fan of the smokey particle effects of the new game. I feel like they are too saturated and can sometimes be distracting. I much prefered smash 4's smoke effects, which were minimal.

I haven’t seen much on anyone else’s comments about audio so here’s my take: Ultimate has much more clarity and less emphasis on synthesized bass sounds (at least from Mario’s moves as you demonstrated). Wii U has lots of muddy sounds (treble mixed low, bass sounds too high, deeper audio making Mario feel heavier) on Mario’s moves such as bass distortion with it sometimes sliming into the next move and vocal audio from Mario getting covered up because of it. What I love about Battlefield is that the time of day doesnt actually change in Ultimate like it did in 4. Rather than the sun disappearing and a giant moon appearing in the background, the a Solar Eclipse takes place. My biggest issue with Smash 4's Battlefield was that the difference between night and day were too distracting for me personally. Ultimate fixes this with it being more subtle while still being present.

Graphics for games have looked pretty much the same since 2010. I remember the jump from 8 bit to 16 bit was startling, and from PS2 to PS3 even more so. Now, the graphics only look about 5 percent better every few years.

The thing about Ultimate is that it's a new game reusing older material to supplement tons of new material. That's one of the reasons why everybody figured it was a port at first (all the ports during the Switch's first year didn't help things). If you're an Atlus fan, you're actually quite familiar with this kind of design. Shin Megami Tensei 3, Digital Devil Saga, Persona 3 and Persona 4 reuse tons of assets, but you'd be crazy to say that each newer game is just a port of the older one. Why completely redo everything from scratch when you have older stuff you can polish with better hardware or tools? (Note: You have to actually be a competent developer to pull this off. Compare and contrast Super Smash Bros. Ultimate with Fallout 76 as an example.)

In terms of sound effects, when it comes to footsteps, throwing a hit, jumping, landing, and explosions, it remains exactly the same. However in terms of landing a hit and falling hard on the ground, on the Wii U version it sounds more crunchy, but on the Switch version it has more of a popping sound to it, which to me, sounds more satisfying.

For the switch having only 720p graphics maximum its amazing with those limitations that nintendo managed to reimagine smash even better. EDIT: To clear up the smash 4 port debate ill say this: the overall amount of content added in is too much for a port not to mention with battle changes such as air dodges making you move in the direction your pushing the left stick, perfect guarding and many character tweaks SSBU is drastically different in terms of combat and graphically also this game dwarfs SSB WII U in terms of chracters and musical tracks and trophies i mean ffs it has a god damn adventure mode that offers ways to obtain characters faster and give spirits which also drastically change combat and offer new ways to set up against your rival honestly if people would just stop for one second to realize the changes and effort sakurai put into making this game then they would see that ultimate isn't a port its an entirely different game. I don't know if it actually borrows so many assets as you pretend. Even the models are different. There's a roof in quality when both consoles have pretty much the same graphic power. But I'd say that smash ultimate is almost as different from smash wiiu as smash wiiu from brawl.

Nintendo themselves said they did over 10,000 changes to Smash 4. The word "Changes" makes it clear that they started from smash 4 and worked up. People saying it's a "new game" are delusional. It's not, it's just an extensive and amazing update.

People in the comments are making passionate but flawed arguments :S The idea seems to be that because there are New characters, mechanics, music, stages and UI tweeks that it's automatically a brand new game - but by that logic, Street fighter 2: Championship edition is a COMPLETELY different game from vanilla street fighter 2 or Blazblue: Central Fiction is a completely different game from Calamity Trigger (the original release) Fighting game fans can tell the difference between a sweet update and a whole new game. (Street Fighter 4 > Street Fighter 5) but perhaps the Nintendo fan-base are less familiar with the concept?

I’m sorry, I can’t see how people think Smash 4 looks better. Ultimate is a game that can age well because it’s not going for crazy amazing graphics, just for popping vibrant models and animation. Smash 4 tried its hardest to look great yet it already hasn’t aged well. Ultimate generally looks better with its mix of realistic textures and the cartoony art style. It’s got the cartoony color but a bit of the realistic detail. Ultimate is a game that can age well because I think it goes for simplicity rather than complexity while Smash 4 does it all with bad lighting, mediocre texturing and already poorly aged fur and special effects. Also the characters in Ultimate have better animations and facial expressions easily. The color in Ultimate also looks better, I’m sorry but looking close at a bunch of models for Smash 4 look so gross. The characters feel way too exaggerated with the color and Ultimate goes down to steady it to a nice degree.
