Very helpful! Never was taught the right way to play a buzz roll.

Thanks Phyllis. None of my teachers were good at teaching it. Not sure why other than it must have just come very naturally for them. I discovered how to do it successfully by analyzing what my military instructor was doing as he played it. Once I figured it out I thought it was actually pretty easy to teach and play. Much easier than a double stroke roll which is quite difficult for most people.

Very informative and useful. Did I detect a mouse sqeaking somewhere 😊 Maybe a little oil would fix that!

@@Michael-xw4er thanks! Glad you found it helpful. Not sure what was squeaking. Maybe my practice pad stand.

I would add a little pressure after the initial contact. This lessens the natural decrescendo and helps keep the volume more even/consistent.

Are you talking about on the accents or each buzz stroke including unaccented notes? My goal is always to get as many bounces out of each stick as possible. This is what Joe Morello taught from what I understand. Don't you find that adding that pressure to the stick after initial contact lessens the number of bounces? Or maybe you're looking at it from a perspective that less bounces but stronger bounces is more effective.

@@BradAllenDrumsKansasCityYes, it will decrease the number of bounces, but combine the slight pressure with the inward sweep of both hands toward the center of the snare compensates. The sweep brings more volume as you travel to the higher resonance of the middle of the drum. The slight, slight pressure also lessens the decrescendo of the natural bounce. Granted, a delicate balance.

@@lvvry1855 that's interesting. I'll have to experiment with that
