Looking good!! Looks like the solarization really cooked and crunched that clover! Love the bucket of worm castings and your method of dumping some in then just placing the potato in right after...super simple! I can't believe I still have two potato plants still going strong here when a lot of my spring garden has died back from the heat! Excellent video Brian!!🪱🪱🪱

It is tricky to solarize anything in April in WI. Fortunately we had more sunny days than cloudy. My worm castings is how I garden, they are kind of the heartbeat of my garden. Second year, totally no outside fertilizers. To be honest Patrick, it would have been a lot simpler to just purchase fertilizer. Cover crop, cover crop termination, raising worms, compost , leaf mold, they are all aspects of how I choose to garden. I believe in some ways it makes it more meaningful. Can not imagine how to have a garden in Tampa FL. I will not get a potato until, mid July, main harvest early Aug. It seems to me, the garden season takes so long to get here, then, like a fart in the wind, it is gone. Thanks for watching Patrick, I wish you and your family Well!!!!

@@brianseybert192 😂🤣😂Fart in the wind! That sounds like our winters down here!!! Gone before you know it!! I'm compost and vermicompost only with some fish fertilizer at the beginning of the season. I'll wean the garden off that too eventually.

Nice job Brian. I like that you left the terminated clover on the bed like a mulch layer. Hope the straw works well with those darn jumping worms.

After Screening all the soil in that bed last year to remove as much food for the jumping worms as possible, I just wanted to try and get some soil structure back. Incorporating that clover into the soil would have been another step back. Potatoes already busting out from below the straw, as they grow I just add more straw. Been poking around a bit in the soil below the straw, have not seen any JW's yet, fingers crossed. Thanks for watching Rick! Stay Well!!!

I need to try your solarization method. I have tried tarps with mixed results. Thanks for sharing!

Spring time, because the sun is still pretty low, can be difficult to solarize the soil. That is why I used a double layer to trap the heat, was not sure if we had enough sunny days, just got lucky! Thanks for watching! Stay Well!!!

Impressive results, Brian. How soon before the first frost did you plant the clover? ~ Sandra

I am not quite sure, lol. I know I terminated a crop of buckwheat in mid september? then planted the clover. The clover only had about 10 to 12 weeks before our 1st hard freeze, the frost did not really affect it. This year I will skip the buckwheat and just plant the clover after I pull the potatoes. The only thing that is hard to get to stay in the soil for me is nitrogen, figured I would give clover a shot, sent a soil sample in, no results back yet. I know the worm castings, compost and leaf mold have all the other nutrients, nitrogen is a real bugger, still trying to figure it out without adding a supplement. You are not born knowing this stuff, trial and error,. I believe the comfrey I lay on the other beds help with the nitrogen, the comfrey is exploding, already harvested twice for worm food, will use more comfrey this year. Thanks for watching Sandra! Stay Well!!!!
