Another big improvement to the L322's audio system with this subtle, stealthy, yet powerful upgrade! Anyone else planning some audio goodness?

On the sub box from the 02-04's are they the same for both sides or should I look for a left and right? Great stuff!
@SamsMotors5 ай бұрын
I assumed they were all the same, but perhaps the LHD cars have them on the opposite side to maintain the distance to the driver? I haven’t checked if there’s a space on the passenger side of mine for another box - but it sure would be interesting if there is!

I like how you used WinISD and looked at the T&S parameters. One of the biggest mistakes some people make is to buy a pair of beefy speakers, put them in an enclosure, then wonder why the sound is really awful and resonant. Making sure to match the enclosure size and type to speakers is so important, as it's all one system that has to work together. Great vid!
@SamsMotors5 ай бұрын
Cheers! Yeah I was thinking about adding a port to the box as recommended by WinISD but didn’t want to make it too overpowering. Maybe an experiment for another day!

Your response curve looks very similar to the one in my 2004 Lincoln Navigator. The bump you see around 50 hz is the vehicles natural peak. You'll notice massive reductions in output around 60 and 70 hz and then your front door speakers start to pick up around 80 hz and up. Your biggest issue is that a sealed box is not going to have strong output under 40 hz and you're also not going to get strong output over 55 hz due to the vehicle size. This creates a very narrow and peaky response curve for the subwoofer. Basically you get one note bass. To get a real Improvement you're going to want to switch over to a ported enclosure that is tuned quite low. If you were to install a single 10 inch sub in a ported enclosure tuned to 30 HZ you would notice a much smoother bass response curve. Alternatively, if you're not looking for massive output and want to keep things very stealthy, you might consider removing one of the 6.5 subs and sealing it's opening. The single 6.5 will be in an oversized enclosure (oversized for sealed, but just right for ported) and you can add either an internal or external port. Something like a 1.5" tube. Also, make sure to hook up the remote bass knob so you can control it from up front and don't be afraid to raise the level up. 👍

This is a great idea. I’d remove the carpet from that cover, cut holes to match the speakers and cover with acoustic carpet. That will let the speakers breathe

@palsandor11325 ай бұрын
Sam why not just cut a hole into the carpet and let the original in? Have you tested the sound with the original sub in place without the carpet? I am thinking to cut a hole and cover it with some decent speaker cover…

Hey Sam! I'm trying to copy your project here. I'm confused about the plug wiring. You indicate that plug has power, two grounds, a remote on, and one set of speaker leads, is that right? So, are you saying the factory subwoofer setup sent a single speaker wire into the integrated amp, then sent out FOUR speaker wires (I noticed each sub must have been dual voicecoil as I saw four speaker wires when you disassembed)? My question is how EXACTLY did you connect that plug to your mini-amp? Also, did you ever find the receptacle plug so you could use that like plug & play?
@SamsMotorsАй бұрын
Hey! The factory plug supplies both power and signal to the mini amplifier. The amplifier I used can take either a low level (line) signal, or a high level speaker signal for its input. The factory subwoofer is run as a single channel regardless of whether the car has the later “oval” woofer or the earlier dual round woofers. So the new round woofers are also running as a single channel which is correct. And yes the round woofers were dual voice coil originally. My new woofers are also dual voice coil but I am only using one coil from each as the power handling is more than enough for this application. Hope that helps

@4813RTАй бұрын
Sorry to bother you again, Sam! I have another Q that might help others. You confirmed that the factory system sends a single channel (mono) to that sub, so... How did you wire the two subs together, parallel, right? I'm thinking of using two JL Audio 6W3v3 subs, wired parallel. These subs are 4 ohms, but two of them wired parallel splits final impedance to 2 ohms. Anyway, please explain what you did in case I'm getting this wrong; it's been a long time since my high school car stereo install days...
@4813RTАй бұрын
Nevermind. I think I can tell that your mini-amp is a two-channel amp, so each sub has its own signal, right?
@SamsMotorsАй бұрын
Those JL subs should be awesome. I just missed out on a pair of those on eBay before starting this project! Yeah so you’d have a choice of 2 ohms or 8 ohms. Depending on your amp’s power output you might choose one or the other. Mine were I believe 8 ohms per voice coil, so I wired one voice coil from each sub together in parallel to end up with 4 ohms final.

Hi Sam, I also did a similar upgrade. Yours is much better thought out than mine though I must say. When it rains all music sounds awful as my wipers make a clunking sound upon changing directions. Do you also have this issue? If yes, do you think there is a solution here? Seems odd a luxury car was released with that clunking sound on its wipers! Maybe its just mine. Keep up the great vids!

It's a good idea to wear gloves when adding the sound deadening as the aluminium is very sharp as I found out when I used some in a previous vehicle.

Like what you’ve done here Sam, good thinking using the old L322 box! Seems almost too good to be true that the standard power cable can be re-used. I guess it’s enough for the micro amp that you applied here.
@SamsMotors5 ай бұрын
Yeah, it works very well indeed. The power cable is routed via a 40 amp fuse in the rear distribution board so that’s plenty for the amp.

did that green connector plug directly into the original amp? thanks man , ive got a 2006 HSE im working on.

Yes it did. I'm not sure if the 2006 uses the same amp setup as the later cars, but you can check it quite easily and compare the wiring diagrams to figure it out.

I'm just wondering if the dual sub speakers should work in opposite direction (phase/ antiphase) because the box actually dosent have any ventilation. It could be checked with just switching +/- of one of the subs speakers.
@SamsMotors5 ай бұрын
Interesting idea!
@JasonWW20005 ай бұрын
They should definitely both move in and out together. If you were to wire them out of phase with each other you would get a massive reduction in output because they would create cancellation with each other.

I have the HD system in my 2012 Westminster which I am quite pleased with. That is apart from the bass that does vibrate a bit when you turn it up. I am thinking of applying the deadening stuff to the original woofer cabinet and the parts of the car around it. Do you think that would make a decent difference? Very good video as always, thank you.
@SamsMotors5 ай бұрын
For how little it costs and the effort required I’d say it’s worth a go. Your subwoofer speaker is probably a bit deteriorated too, but you could try the deadening first
