I have one of those “isn’t it a strange world” stories about a mid-60’s Belvedere. About 10 years ago, my son and I stopped into the Subway in Magnolia, TX, for lunch. My boy was about six years old at the time, and while we were eating, I was explaining to him the difference between different kinds of hot rods - rat rods, hot rods, street rods, etc. While we were talking, a somewhat glamorous looking woman who was probably in her mid 60’s came up to us and said she had overheard us talking and figured we were “car guys”. She went on to explain that her husband was a huge car guy and had drag raced old Mopars most of his life. He had recently become ill and had been forced to sell off his cars, in particular a ‘64 Plymouth Belvedere that had been his pride and joy. She indicated that the Belvedere had been sold to somebody in Minnesota, which immediately got my wheels turning because I grew up in Minnesota and lived right next door to a rabid Mopar guy who had eventually turned his passion into a restoration business that he operated out of a large shop he had built on his property. The woman didn’t remember who had bought the car, but I immediately had a suspicion that it might have been my boyhood neighbor. We exchanged telephone numbers and I told her that if I found out her husband’s car had been bought by my old neighbor I would text her some photos so he could see what his old Plymouth looked like now! The next summer when I was back home for a visit, I swung into my old neighbor’s place and told him the story about the lady at Subway and asked if he was the one who had bought the car? It turns out he didn’t - but actually knew the guy who did and he was irritated with the guy because he had had the car for well over a year and hadn’t done a single thing with it yet! When I got back home to Texas, I texted the lady back and told her that I had found where her car had gone and told her to tell her husband that the car was still exactly as he had built it. Her last text to me was “MOPARS FOREVER!” and that is the last communication I ever had with her. Now here’s the really weird part of the story - when I went into my old neighbor’s shop (a business that had literally been BUILT from the ground up restoring late-50’s Chrysler letter cars, and later, early-70’s Chrysler muscle cars) there wasn’t a single Mopar in his garage! Nothing but a sea of late-70’s Firebird’s that were in various stages of restoration! You could have knocked me over with a feather……..🪶

I've got two stories of "small world". Back in 1989, I went to go with a friend to look at a Charger. The owner was a middle-age guy, we met at a gas station and my friend test drove the car (but didn't wind up buying it). I sat in the back seat during the test drive. Fast forward to about 2003 and I meet the owner of Magnum Products for a vendor meeting. They supplied breathers and PCV valves to the aftermarket. The name came from the owner owning a Dodge Magnum at one time. Got talking to him and sure enough---same guy. The second story is the alternator sales person that I deal with at times came from Ford Component Sales and I knew and met him at my old job in the aftermarket. Now he comes to my current job for sales support and training. He brings with him another person---turns out that person I know as well. He worked for a company that the company I worked for took over and he remembered my name when he saw my business card. I knew he was on point when he mentioned the time frame and some other things going on at the time when I would have known him. Small world.

That's a piece of history there when a car that's been modeled and featured was painted in your yard and you had a hand in doing it. Better yet that you photo documented it. I would scan those photos so there's a backup copy if needed. The Super Six (225 CID LTP) was used on cars from 1977-1980 and trucks from 1979-1980. No VIN, can't win, but easy to figure out, no doubt: 2 for Belvedere six-cylinder, 3 for Belvedere II, 5 for 1965 model year, possible 1 or 2 for Detroit, MI (Lynch Road) assembly, 5 for Los Angeles, CA (Maywood) or 7 for St. Louis, MO (Fenton) assembly and the rest is the production sequence. The Lynch Road facility closed in April 1981, the Maywood plant in 1971, and St. Louis in 2009. No tag, can't brag, but easy to figure out, no doubt: 333 or R33 for Belvedere II four door sedan, H1T or H4T for Tan interior trim, possible X for Light Tan exterior paint, among other codes.

Yes the lettering was applied in my back yard at 11846 Cherrylee drive in El Monte, CA. Mr. Rich LeFebvre was / is a friend of mine who would drive down from his Seattle home with his latest altered wheelbase creation on a trailer. We both used the talents of Bob "Team Thompson" to letter our funny cars. Bob did my "Wilshire Shaker" Nova as well as Richard's Gold Rush. But Richard also had a red Plymouth funny car called "the Performance King" that was also lettered in my yard. Today 11846 Cherrylee Drive in El Monte is a BUDDHIST retreat! Seriously! After living there for 15 years, I decided to sell and move "home" to Massachusetts. The Buddhists were there within a week with a cash offer! I accepted, they transformed the place from "the Hillbilly Hell Shack" into a temple! Ayhoo, Thanks for watching and writing. -Steve Magnante

I had a 73 Satellite 4 door. I got it cheap as it had been a taxi. I never had a problem with it except a oil sending unit which cost $10.00. When I sold it the car had 160,000 miles on it. The guy who bought it put almost 60,000 more trouble free miles on it. His son started driving it then. The body on a Plymouth eight rust away but you can’t kill that slant 6

Back in the mid 80's when I was growing up the old man that lived behind us and a few houses down Woodrow Gaudet had a 65 Belvedere II just like that only in robins egg blue with a 318. He bought it new and by the mid 80's it was a yard art. He was driving his dads early 70's yellow Duster after he took dad off the road, because one Summer day dad was backing the car out of the 1 car garage and thought he had it in reverse when it was in drive. I was in the yard working on my newest aquisition a 1960 Mercedes 180D I still own and heard him start the car, then heard it revving harder and harder until I heard a crunch, a bang, then a crash. Old man Gaudet had the front bumper up against the wall when he thought it was in reverse and kept pushing against it until the entire rear wall broke clean off the garage to the ground, at which point he drove over it and crashed into the cherry tree directly in back of it. Good times.

Steve!! You have a Chevy II?!?! That's awesome. As you know, I'm a huge Chevy II fan. I have 2 of them at the moment...a '62 wagon with a vette 350 tuned port/ 700R4, and a '62 2 door hard top that my mother bought new and my dad put a seriously pissed off 283 and 4-speed in it in 1963. It currently has 29k original miles on it. Dad bought a brand new GMC van in 1972 and the deuce sat in the garage unused until 2012 when I bought it, freshened it up and had it ready for my parents 50th anniversary party in 2013. I love the car and feel blessed to own it now. The car is white with red guts and about as perfect as a unrestored car can be when it's 61 years old! I have too many cars, but "Suzie" as she was named when new will ALWAYS be my favorite. 😊

The slant six originally debuted in the Valiant that was launched as a separate make and sold under Chrysler dealers. The engine was designed to fit in the Valiant's smaller engine compartment. The "ram" effect of the long intake runners was even more pronounced if you had a factory produced but dealer installed four barrel intake and carb. My older brother had that setup on his 1963 Dodge Dart GT with factory four speed. It was easy to compare the difference as my dad had a '61 Belvedere with the same 225 six.
@SteveMagnante
@SteveMagnante Жыл бұрын
Your brother had a Hyper-Pak! That stuff was reproduced by Doug Dutra and Clifford Performance about 20 years ago. I built a couple of Hyper-Pak equipped engines and they are indeed potent enough to make nearly 200 hp. The hassle is the 225's super long stroke and modest cylinder head port and valve sizes (same head was used on the baby 170 cube Slant Six....decent on the 170, a cork on a 225). But your brother probably had a REAL Chrysler-made Hyper-Pak. Same looks and effect as the later Dutra/Clifford castings but SOOOO much cooler! Thanks for watching nd writing. -Steve Magnante

@@googleusergp The reverse pattern shift indicator plates are indeed rare, but can be recreated. My old friends at Mosher's Muscle Car Motors in Monrovia, CA used to have a local TROPHY SHOP create very accurate replicas out of Lucite panels for use on the famous string of Bob Mosher-built Race Hemi replicas. The actual shift pattern inside the Torqueflite was an easy matter to "reverse" by using a "reverse pattern" valve body from B&M, Art Carr, Winters, etc. or using a kit to modify a standard valve body. Takes about an hour if you're used to Torqueflites. The column-shift mechanism was easily "blue printed" for more positive "detents" with a small die grinder. This is all similar to what Chrysler did way back when. They actually pioneered it, today we "ape" it. Mosher's is still around but less active than in their peak years of 1995 - 2015. They built dozens of top notch Max Wedge and Race Hemi replicas that change hands today amongst purists. By the way, Bob Mosher's father was Robert Mosher. His father was one of the producers of the Leave It To Beaver and Munsters TV shows of the 1959 - 1965 period. When the show announcer says "ROBERT MOSHER" in the closing credits, that's Bob's Dad! The show had a "deal" to use Chrysler vehicles and young Bob Mosher Jr. was first exposed to them as a kid when Dad would bring them home and park them in the Mosher family Burbank, CA drive way! I got to know Bob as a fellow Super Stock / altered wheelbase fanatic during my California years. Bob's alive and well today! His shop is now run by young (35 years old) Steve "Torqueflite" Benoit, who used to mow my El Monte lawn as a kid but now is one of the most learned Mopar Race Hemi students / builders alive. bob taught him well and he carries the torch now. Hello SolamenteVees, that "somebody" was Bud "Hemi Honker" Faubel, a Pennsylvania racer who worked his way up from a 1960 Chrysler 300 to a factory Race Hemi in 1964 then the "golden ticket" Altered Wheelbase FX'er of '65. It is a documented fact that Faubel DROVE his plain white Dodge FX'er all the way home to Chambersburg, PA in the winter! At the time, Faubel was probably about 35 or 40, "old enough to know better". But the fact is, Faubel was one of the top Dodge salesmen at Shively Motors (a Dodge dealer) and was their "performance man" at the time. Faubel was also an avid coin collector! Your Dad must have some amazing stories about working as Employee Two at Direct Connection. Did he work with Larry Shepard? I was honored to be asked to be a video spokesperson for the revived Direct Connection about a year ago. Dodge hired me to host a series of videos showing the new Direct Connection parts program. We shot it at the Featherstone Road RD garage. A fun week on HALLOWED ground! Thanks for watching and writing. -Steve Magnante

My dad's first brand new car was a 65 Belvedere II wagon that he took delivery of her in July of 65. Even though he spent most of 67-68 in Vietnam, when he sold her in August 74 she had over 400,000 miles on her. She was due for an overhaul and needed another set of floorboards but the ole slant 6, 3 speed one the column, never let us down. Even after getting hit by a new Corvette in 1972. The Body Shop couldn't locate a Belvedere grill, so they used a 65 Satellite's, which my dad wasn't happy about, but I thought she looked great. Just minut differences. I give just about anything to get my own 65 Belvedere wagon, white over beige

I remember sitting in the back seat of a friends 1964 Plymouth Belvedere two door business coupe that had a ram inducted 426 Hemi residing under the hood. Push button torque flight transmission. dog dish hubcaps hardly any trim to speak of. Cheater slicks in the back. We were cruising Van Nuys Blvd on a Friday or Saturday night I can’t remember which. After all it was 1964. There was not a single car on that night that could even come close to beating it across the intersection!

It was a shame when they shut down the cruising. That was a great time. McDonald's was the starting point for us.

Woulda been cool! But lets not forget the WWII Tank Engine made up of NINE 230-cube flathead sixes arranged in a radial layout! These were used in certain medium tanks, the Sherman was one (some Shermans that is, not all). There are KZbin videos on this massive 54 cylinder monster. Thanks for watching and writing. -Steve Magnante

@@SteveMagnante Absolutely! I've seen some of those monster radial engines in person. Truly amazing machines. I think a frankenstein slant 6 v12 funny car would be a wild project for a certain channel hmmmm ;)

A cool ol' Mopar. By the looks of it, though, being rebuilt into a funny car is about all it would be good for. Couldn't get much of a look at it, though, as my eyes were continually drawn to the sweet Nova beside it. And is that another T-Bird lurking in the background?

Currently in the market for a Thunderbird and debating between getting one of the “Retrobirds” or one of the last three years (‘95, ‘96, ‘97) of the old coupe body style…….🤔

@Google User GP yup. Sure looks like a potential builder to me, but being a New England car, probably a better candidate for racer rather than a street car.

@ddellwo for me, it would depend on whether you're looking for a cruiser or something a bit more fun to drive. For a cruiser, a retro Bird would be great. However, I'd love to find a decent 10th Gen car for a Coyote swap.
