The year was 2016. I was in 10th Grade at the regional competitions for wrestling, I had to win the finals in order to secure my spot to go to provincials. I was met by a guy named Henry Vo, someone from our rival school who had beaten everyone on his side of the bracket without being scored on. He was more muscular and powerful than I was, so I knew I was at a disadvantage right out the gate. The first half of the match was tipped in his favour 6-11. Adding insult to injury, during the match, my shoulder was dislocated. My coach said I could have won but he was pleased with how I did. If he hadn't said that, I would've probably cut my losses there and gone home. But those words, along with my own will, they stirred something within me. I wanted to win this SO badly, no matter the cost. And so, I pleaded my coach--and the medics--to put my shoulder back into place. They protested, but my coach could see the fire inside, and eventually popped it back into place for me. At THAT moment, when I walked back out onto the mat, that's when this music started to play in my mind. Beaten and battered, yet much like Ryu when he first faced Sagat, the desire to win overwhelmed me. What followed was possibly the most difficult two minutes of fighting in my entire life, and in the end, the score ended 13-13. The referee shook our hands, I shook my opponent's. I waited for this to be over. Suddenly, I felt my right arm being raised up. I had won by decision. God, I don't know what it is about Street Fighter and its music, but for some reason, especially this theme... it not only resonates and sticks in my mind, but it empowers me. It makes me feel invincible.

i feel as though akuma, like gouken, is trying to teach ryu, be it in his own unique way. maybe he sees in ryu, a truly worthy end. he doesnt see it in gouken, or in gen, or hell even oro really, but he sees the true potential in ryu, and wants to push him harder and farther than he might otherwise be willing to go. he wants that true fight, be it a match of the satsui, denjin, or something else entirely.

That.. Is actually quite true. Akuma does try to teach Ryu and bring out the Satsui no Hado, but Ryu doesn't want to be thought that side of Ansatsuken. If Ryu wanted to turn there, he would've decided to go be tought by Akuma.

More or less. Akuma sees the potential Ryu has as a fighter, but he believes the Satsui No Hado is the only way a fighter can achieve the full extent of their potential. In Akuma's story in SFV he tests Ryu's newfound Mu No Ken, and after a discussion of their differing philosophies Akuma accepts it as a path as equally valid as the Satsui, and begins treating Ryu with less distain and more as an equal.
