I remember mom making what she called super supper back in the mid-1960s onward. I think she stopped making it in the 1980s. I asked her for the recipie, but she couldn't find it. I watched/helped her make it a few times back then. I think this might be the same recipie. Thanks for putting it on KZbin. 😊 Cold leftovers straight from the fridge are good too. 👍

Thanks, Linda, for presenting this vintage meal. I would love to see you do more dishes from bygone eras that you enjoyed. I found it interesting that in the 60's you could buy a can of tomato sauce with bits of tomatoes in it. i I will definitely try this recipe soon. I think it'd be a great, economical dish for a potluck also. Thanks.
@Handsthatcook7 жыл бұрын
vabreeze, I have done a few vintage recipes and will continue to do so. I have a lot of old cookbooks but the problem is most and I mean a lot of these recipes, I wouldn't eat, lol so the pickens' are slim. I'll pass along any good ones I find. Yes they did have tomato sauce with tomato bits back in the day but a lot of those type canned goods have disappeared....what ever sells good is what's on the shelves. Mexicorn was a smaller can of yellow corn that included red peppers...it was good but I haven't seen it in a while. It's not as easy to find. You can use onion powder but it would be much better with the minced onions. Try it to see if you like it that way. TFW God Bless, Linda

Years ago in the 60's! Or lord I remember vaguely the 60's my mother cooking. Mostly it was stew in dumplings which I love to this day. When I grew up, mostly it was just me and my parents. My siblings grew up in the late 40's to 50's. They ate differently then what I did. OMG I loved her stew and dumplings, if it be beef or chicken. And I still make them today, I love hamburg stew. Pour it over mash taters or make it into a Shepard pie.
@Handsthatcook7 жыл бұрын
Hey Shalimar....that was a long time ago and I never forgot this recipe. It stayed in a dark corner of my mind, LOL. Anyway, I enjoyed it then and still enjoy it. When I smelled it baking the memory came rushing back. Gosh that stew and dumplings sounds good. I love homemade dumplings! TFW and telling your story. God Bless, Linda
@ShalimarPerfume7 жыл бұрын
The thing is we never had the luxury of having potato flakes and sour cream. It was Potato mash with butter and milk for hamburg stew. No dried minced onion. Real onions, fried with the ground beef and maybe a can of tomatoes. Fresh celery, carrots, etc. Geeze my mother even had a specific recipe for hamburg goulash/aka american chop suey. It had only a few ingredients and a dash of curry powder at the end. I even still make that to this day.
@Handsthatcook7 жыл бұрын
When I think back it's surprising to me that there were instant potatoes, dried minced onion and tomato sauce with tomato bits in it....that must have been on the cusp of the food industry experiments. Your meals sound wonderful and I wouldn't have felt deprived for not having the "fake" foods. I'm sure you and your family were much healthier than the rest of us.

Hi Linda! You demonstrate the most delicious looking meals! It's like an upside shepherd's pie, but with more flavour. I keep instant mashed potatoes in my pantry ever since the accident. Like Sam, no one in my house can tell the difference. They don't sell Rotel here, but I found something very similar in a Canadian brand. Can't wait to try this out, but I'm making your meatloaf first. The Elvis one. Your meatloaf vid is posted on my sidebar, because I googled meatloaf while in Honolulu. Jeff and I were watching the news at bedtime, and they did a segment on meatloaf being President Trump's fave food. He eats it all the time and serves it to guests. Jeff looked at me and said " now I'm really craving meatloaf. You should make that Elvis one again soon". I'll make it tomorrow, then next week I'll make your delicious super supper. Have a Blessed day! 💚
@Handsthatcook7 жыл бұрын
Hi Julia!! Welcome home! I know you've had a wonderful and well deserved vacation and it's good to hear from you! I've made that meatloaf several times and it's the only good meatloaf I've ever made. You and the family should like this Super Supper as well. I've had several people tell me it's like an upside down cottage pie...which I've never made or eaten but if it tastes anything like this super supper I know it's good. Let me know how all of you liked it. I've read about President Trump's love of meatloaf. I thought it is amusing that a man worth billions would enjoy meatloaf as his favorite food....I guess he's had a lot of GOOD meatloaf over the years, Lol!! Talk with you soon....God Bless!!
