The amount of love they put on their puppy is absolutely genuine, the moment the window broke , this family’s initial concern was to look for their puppy’s well being and I was moved and had a brink of an emotional meltdown and I just thank God that they’re safe. Hopefully the whole People in the Island could recover soon.

You were right. That calm moment at 20:32 was the eye of the storm and the winds that took out the kubo was the first wall of the eye. This was very similar to my experience with Typhoon Haiyan in 2013 when it hit Coron which is a very identical touristy island to Siargao. I'm glad your family is safe! You will feel hopeless for the first few weeks because of the destruction and death of every vegetation you could possibly see over the horizon but Siargao will rebuild again, the leaves will grow again, the flowers will bloom again, the birds will sing their songs again, and its people will rise up from the ashes which is a sight to behold/ an experience worth experiencing just like what I experienced in Coron. Stay strong!

Just a friendly advice who's been through many storms here in PH. Never settle for "i think we're gonna be ok"... It's because of that thinking that i've witnessed many deaths years back when all hell broke loose when the Typhoon finally hit. Luckily it was only 240~260kph of gustiness compared to truly terrifying 300 to 400kph ones with higher water concentration.

It's better that it was happened at day time unlike sendong typhoon in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan City on Dec. 17, 2011. Many people died that time because it was at midnight.... sleeping time for us and no electricity during the typhoon....Those people who were awake that time, they didn't know where to go because it was very quick flood mixed with mud.

I agree. Same thing that happened back in 2013 when typhoon Yolanda(Haiyan) which was the strongest storm ever recorded hit Tacloban and Leyte at night. The super strong wind plus storm surge just washed out everything. Imagine being in the middle of the storm all dark, cold, wet and everything chaotic that you can imagine. 💔 I remember some workmates in Cebu crying coz their friends and relatives from Tacloban and Leyte can no longer be found after the storm. It was very very heart heart breaking 😭💔 For anyone living in tropical islands/country just like the Philippines, never ever underestimate a typhoon even it was announced by the media as signal #1 days before landfall, it could always strengthen in just a few hours before landfall, same as what happened with typhoon Odette(Rai) last December 16, 2021. Praying for recovery to all those affected by the typhoon. 🙏🏻

As a Floridian who just experienced back to back hurricanes 🌀 and many other ones from the past, I can say, this was not smart to do, and I say that respectfully, because many people in my State of Florida lost their homes because they were to stubborn to leave their homes, they stayed there and lost everything from flooding to strong winds, if you live on the edge of the water or near a beach, listen! I don't care how high you think you are, you need to get out of there because it's not worth risking your life, that wind is strong enough to push that water up to that house and totally destroy it, luckily for him that didn't happen and that the family is ok, but this should be a learning lesson for anyone who chooses not to listen.

The saying from your grandma that "Keep the windows slightly open when the typhoon passes" is actually to keep your roof intact preventing it from blowing up. It's actually to minimise the pressure difference building up between outside and the indoor because the wind is speedier outside and still in inside ☺️. Taught in our Physics Class.
@සුළංබටිල්ලා

This is not accurate. The wind is what blows your roof off, pressure difference is not that significant.

"Opening your windows during a hurricane or tornado can cause large-scale structural damage to your house. When air enters your home with a significant amount of force, it will need a way to exit. If the wind is strong enough, it may blow the roof off of your home!" "The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety recommends that you close all interior doors and all windows for major wind storms including hurricanes. That’s because wind that enters a home through open windows creates strong upward pressure on the home’s roof. Keeping the doors and windows closed helps to compartmentalize the pressure and reduce the force on the roof which gives it a better chance to stay intact. As pressure keeps rising your home’s roof may eventually blow apart allowing water to come pouring in and flood your home and belongings. Keeping your doors and windows closed reduces the force on your roof and helps it stay put. In addition to closing exterior windows and doors, it’s also recommended that you close all interior doors as well." "Some who believe this claim think strong winds from severe storms like hurricanes and tornados will pass through the house, creating less structural damage. Our sources said leaving windows open is a recipe for disaster. Not only will wind, rain and debris damage the interior but could destroy your whole home. The Insurance Institute for Business And Home Safety said winds that enter through open windows or doors create upward pressure on the home’s roof. IBHS conducted a test simulating hurricane-force winds. A home with an open front door was placed next to a home where all doors and windows were shut. After applying the hurricane-force winds, the roof flew off the home with the open door."

First time to see your channel. I'm following lots of channels on Odette. My wife is in Mandaluyong and I'm in Toronto, Canada. These storms terrify me because she, and my extended family, (In Laws), are all there. I hope you're all safe and healthy. Things can be replaced and repaired. Lives are most precious. If the pup is hiding in a specific area, you should shelter in the same area. Animals instinctively know how to find the safest place possible to be during storms. Wherever the pup goes, follow her yourselves, and stay away from the windows. Next storm it would be wise to place plywood over the windows on the outside of the house, bolted into the walls around the windows to protect from violent glass blowouts. Keep Safe Always, Matt - Toronto, Canada

It’s been one year, but everything remains very vivid. It was the afternoon of Dec. 16, 2021, when the atmosphere turned gloomy-dark clouds started to devour the light, winds started to rumble, and rain started to pour torrentially. People flocked to the nearest evacuation center, bringing with them their most valued belongings just before Supertyphoon “Odette” made its landfall. Fear and anxiety were vividly painted on everyone’s faces. What seemed to be on everyone’s mind was how this frightening cataclysm was about to rampage the entire archipelago. But in my house, everything seemed normal. I was just watching television for the hourly status report of the typhoon while gulping hot, aromatic coffee. On the other hand, my Titas were busy packing things and putting fenders on the most vulnerable part of our 90-year-old ancestral house. Some of my cousins were still in bed, relishing the wind that was perfect for procrastination. We have all decided to stay home amidst the menace of this approaching apocalypse. It was around 1 p.m. when the wind strengthened. I was starting to feel uneasy hearing the scary sounds outside. I told my Titas and Lola to stay calm as we stayed together in our sala. However, my curiosity over what was happening outside got the better of me and brought me on my feet to our window. I peeped through a small crack in our jalousie to check the scene outside. What was unleashed to my naked eye filled me with awe, for indeed it was a horrifying sight. The wind was blowing from east to west, the deafening sound of needle-like rain was poking on our and our neighbors’ roofs, the trees were swaying in every direction, the surroundings have become misty, and the sea, five-meters away from our house, has started to spew monstrous waves. Our once paradisiacal place has been thrown into limbo. I was about to rest when, all of a sudden, we heard a bizarre sound echoing from the ground. In just a blink of an eye, we saw how our colossal, century-old mango tree was uprooted in one blow. We were all flabbergasted and alarmed by the strength of this devastating weather disturbance. An hour later, the rain and wind became more violent. I could hear the wind whistling and our house withstanding the force outside, its foundations reeling. I saw everyone was in tears as fear started to take over us. I was really worried about our safety inside our old, dilapidated house, and all I could do was pray-this somehow helped me calm down. Outside, winds continued to ravage, and I saw how our window was shattered into pieces. The opening from that broken window gave me a glimpse of the horrible scene outside. I saw how our neighbor’s roof was practically ripped off by the wind. Corrugated sheets were being blown away just like sheets of paper, while some houses were being crumpled in the storm. All of a sudden, a raucous sound jolted us all-it was our roof! The wind had swept away the top of our house. It was then we all saw, literally, the complete magnitude of this calamity. What was happening outside was a real nightmare that no one ever imagined. The storm continued to rage and had become even more violent. Everything became hazy-nothing could be seen outside due to zero visibility. While the disaster continued to wreak havoc on our hometown, we huddled inside our small room and covered ourselves with blankets to cocoon us from Odette’s frightening claws. We patiently waited inside while we prayed for our safety. It was around six in the evening when the unnerving wailing of the ferocious winds and rains finally calmed down. The silence and darkness outside was just a facet of the aftermath of this catastrophe as if it never happened. When we finally went outside to have a look, what we saw were shocking images. Debris was everywhere, corrugated sheets hung from branches, trunks of trees were scattered all over. All the horrors brought by Odette. It was truly the longest five hours of my life-five hours when my family and I were on the brink of being swept away, or worse, on the brink of death.

'Just broke my heart. 'Just broke my heart. Seeing the aftermath is just beyond words. I'm relieved knowing that all of you are safe and spared. Teared and choked up on what your family and fellow filipinos have gone through. Siargao has a soft spot in my heart. I've visited the island 30 years ago when I worked on a rural electrification project funded by World Bank. From a sleepy island known only by a few locals and international tourists on its unrivaled white sand beaches, waves for surfing, local hospitality, to a world class tourist destination. Now is devastated. It will take a collective effort to bring the island back to its former glory. It will take a strong leadership and one vision to bring this national gem back to its luster that brought countless smiles and great memories to those who were privileged to set foot in this island paradise. We've sent help and will be here for more. From Los Angeles, CA with ❤ and 🙏.

Knowing you’re all okay has made my mother and I cry from relief thank goodness 💛 my mother has been so worried because she knows it all too well. She grew up in a poor small island here in bicol, philippines and when she was a kid there was a super typhoon (anding) that completely destroyed her barangay and the people she knew pass away, even seeing their bodies wash ashore after the storm. She even thought she was going to die which is so heartbreaking to know. Last year we also had a pretty strong typhoon which destroyed some parts of our roof but everything was fine but it was still so scary so I can’t even imagine. As long as everyone is okay, that’s what only matters. I hope for everyone’s fast recovery, sending you all love and happy holidays 💛

I grew up in Australian cyclones as a kid. Firstly, I’m glad you’re okay. Funnily enough, they are now my favourite memories from my childhood, sheltering together as a family. The most internal rooms of the house are the safest, which you’ve now seen why. Somewhere without, or the least number, of windows, skylights etc. That’s almost always the bathroom or toilet, or an internal hallway. Pack the bathroom/most internal room with a mattress and blankets, and a small crate you can grab of your most life or death survival supplies, including a full first aid Pack, non perishable food and food for poppy. Always have lots of crates of water in the house in advance because If you lose access to clean water, that will kill people quickest. Have a large table pre moved in there big enough for you all to hide under. Camp out in this most internal room throughout the duration of the hurricane. If you think you’re going to lose the roof or walls, get under the table. Place poppy in a crate underneath with you. A small soft crate would be easiest, then you can carry her in it if you need to walk to safety. Place yourselves under thick blankets and doonas, rugs. Place the mattress on top as the final layer of protection. So it will go: table. Mattress. Thick blankets and rugs. Yourselves. Hold onto one another, with poppy and Story in the centre of you both. Make sure each person has their own long life battery torch around their neck on a lanyard, along with a distinctive whistle which you will recognise anywhere as one of “your” whistles. I hope and pray you never go through something like this again, but it’s tragically a given thanks to climate change. Feeling more prepared makes a big difference. A lot of that preparation can only come from First hand experience, and coming from the UK, you have no experience with anything like this. I’m sure next time so much as the wind picks up, your house will be totally boarded up complete with a giant umbrella on top. You got you and your family out of there alive and uninjured. You did your job. Be proud of yourselves as parents and I hope you don’t bear yourselves up.

Jay, Thank you for taking video showing the progression of normal from the day before to the peak of the storm. It was terrifying to watch the intensity of the typhoon and clearly most terrifying for you all to experience. I can see how you and Sacha are trying to hold back tears as helplessness, fear, disconnection, confusion, uncertainty, set in. Each to his own to survive through this. Thank God you are all safe, especially from the breakage of the glass window. I grew up in Cebu and each typhoon use to flood our ground floors that we put everything above the ground. In my 33 years living in the Philippines, I have never seen this wind intensity. Kyle of Becoming Filipino had interviewed a few episodes back recently an American expert in disaster preparedness and recovery. You may want to hook up with that man for future plans to set up disaster preparedness. Vloggers Finn Snow & Critter Hunter delve right in immediately helping one family at a time & restoring the village, non-stop from day 1. One cannot wait for government or organizations. The damage to the Visayas and Mindanao regions is too massive. I am helping financially directly to family with my limited ability. Praying for you all!
