Hi Matt, I had somewhat of a strange question for you which might make for an interesting video topic(?) Could you perhaps talk on protecting/maintaining your skin? I just started my superyacht deckhand course and all of my instructors are either super tanned(and burnt) or have very leathery skin from what I assume is prolonged exposure over the years. Was just wondering if you had any tips on how to prevent that? Although I am sure sunscreen is good place to start haha. Thank you so much for your wonderful insights!
@WorkonaSuperyacht4 жыл бұрын
Hello Marceau. This is a really interesting topic, and one which I had never considered doing a video on before now. You're right that it's a big problem, and chapter 3.7 of the Code of Safe Working Practices for Merchant Seafarers deals with this specifically. Sun cream is definitely a good start, but the best way to protect your skin is to shade it completely. If you have been exposed to the sun, a good quality after sun will help re-hydrate your skin, as will drinking plenty of water. Yachts should provide you with all of these products, and you should receive a cap as part of your uniform to help protect your head and face. You'll want to make sure that you keep a bottle of sun cream in the wash locker, tender, down on the swim platform, or wherever else you might be spending a lot of time, for reapplication throughout the day. I shall have a look at how I can incorporate this information into a future video. Thank you for commenting, and for supporting the channel!

Please define the difference between Captain and Ships Master.
@WorkonaSuperyacht4 жыл бұрын
Great question! I often use the terms interchangeably, but after a little research I see that there is in fact a difference! From what I understand, Captain is a general term used to describe someone acting in the capacity of Master on a ship; however, it is not a rank (unless you're talking about naval ships). Master is a rank on board, and in any official documentation you will only ever find the word Master used; for example, "Call the Master". Master is also a qualification; we have qualifications such as Master 3000 or Master Unlimited, but never Captain Unlimited. As a result, there can only be one Captain on a ship at a time, and one Master of that ship, but there could be more than one Master holding Master's qualifications. This is getting complicated! Here's a link to the article where I found this information: gcaptain.com/call-captain-not/#:~:text=Captain%20is%20a%20general%20and,state%20of%20command%20or%20authority.&text=In%20commercial%20shipping%2C%20master%20has,meaning%20while%20captain%20does%20not.

That's very true! I highlight the captain's windows because they are more likely to be overlooked. If it happens repeatedly it can start to raise questions in the captain's mind about how effective the deckhands are at doing their job.
