I just finished rebuilding my 1262 dvt and your video helped ease my concerns over the refitting of the belts. Once you do it you realize it’s actually very simple. I’ve never rebuilt or changed belts on an engine in my whole life. Keep up the great content.

yes - we ARE all friends. And yes … it's ok to be a bell-end occasionally :) Although, in fairness, I think you're the only one rating yourself as a bell-end :) Awesome content, man. You have a great way of explaining things. Perfect pace. Down-to-earth. Nice and clear demonstration. Even for a non-mechanic bloke like me. Keep up the good work, Sir - and whatever you do … don't bloody stop! :)

@@SuperbikeSurgeryTV not at all, mate - all the kindness is from you: there's a metric shit tonne of thought and effort goes into making these videos. It's great that guys like you are willing to put in the hard yards to find a way to bend the time-space continuum and somehow fit it in amongst day job, kids, her indoors, that little thing called sleep, etc.,... 😁👍🏼 A few words of appreciation fall well short of the mark, in fairness!

Perfect "timing"; there's a lot of discussion about this topic right now on one of the Multistrada forums. I'd worked out most of this from the shop manual and other discussions but nothing beats a detailed video like this. Many thanks.

Reminded me that Renault say you need the tuning tool to do the cam belt on a trafic, I never had one and dad taught me many years ago if you can just twist it one quarter of a turn it's spot on!, the van did 20 thousand miles after that with no problems before I sold it. Great video.

Thank you. I purchased a bike over due by a few years to change the belts. I never believed in magic but I do like watching a few different videos and read the service manual when tackling a new type of project. This is the first source I have checked. I will check a few more plus use the manual, hoping to see someone else’s take on getting around the top cover situation. That said I feel fairly confident the video was very well done and most likely all anyone would need. Thank you again.

Great video. When doing diesel cars it’s routine to turn the engine over by hand and recheck everything aligns correctly again before starting the motor. Personally, I would do this if changing the belts on the Duke and make sure there is no resistance felt if valves were hitting pistons etc and that everything realigns correctly before committing to use the starter .

The one piece of info you should have shown is which run of belt you pluck on the vertical cylinder. Also the app that I have used on my phone to check the belts on my 2V machine is from Gates who make the belts called Gates Carbon Drive. Don’t be put off by it being described in the App Store as a bicycle belt tension meter because it does motorcycles as well and you have to choose when you use it. The other thing I would say is the important point is getting the cam pulleys and the “crank” pulley marks lined up with the marks on the engine casing and marking the old belts to ensure that you have the right number of teeth in each of the three runs on the belt i.e. “crank” to cam, cam to cam and cam back down to the “crank”

Hey friend thanks for the long awaited video for the DVT Ducatisti! I've done 3 belts changes on my prior Ducati (ST4S). I'm coming up on my first belt service on my 2015 MTS. This video clarifies much on the topic. I do have a couple questions regarding the exhaust cam on the vertical cylinder. First is what is the diameter of the carbon rod that you're using? I want have some candidates ready before I tear the bike down. Second, I'm doing a belt change only this time. In the case of a valve adjustment, wondering what you use to rotate/set the exhaust cam back into position prior to putting the belt back on.
@SuperbikeSurgeryTV
@SuperbikeSurgeryTV 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, Thanks for the comment. I'm glad you found it helpful. You can easily rotate the rear ex cam with your fingers in the same way you can with other Dukes. I think the rod is somewhere around 9mm od. When I next get one in I think I'll spend a bit of time making a proper holder on the 3D printer :)

So what you're saying about the pulley driving the timing belt is, it's not turning at a 1:1 ratio with the crankshaft. There must be a gear reduction from the crankshaft to this pulley, maybe to make it larger in diameter so the belt does not wrap too tightly around (timing belts have a limit on how tightly they can wrap around pulleys). However, the net gear ratio from crankshaft to cam pulleys (driven pulleys) has to be 1:2, as for all 4-stroke engines. Is this right?

Great video! Thanks for sharing your experience. Quick question: do I understand correctly, that variators are locked (not moving/rotating) on camshafts when the engine is not running? I've heard different opinions on that. Some says that you need to use camshaft locking tool to keep the camshafts in the correct position and then rotate the variators on the camshafts to line up the dots on the variators to be flush with the "head flat surface". Based on your video this is not the case. Do you know if this is the same for MTS 1260 engine? Thanks!
@SuperbikeSurgeryTV
@SuperbikeSurgeryTV 4 жыл бұрын
I don't know if the MTS 1260 IS exactly the same. As with most things Ducati there's lots of opinion but very little fact. The variators are held in position with oil pressure. If you hold the cam and apply constant pressure with engine off you could move thr variator but not that easily. This however is completely irrelevant to changing the belts. If anyone tells you that you must hold the cams with the Ducati tool ask them exactly WHY, they won't be able to give you an answer other than because "Ducati says so" As per the video you are only interested in the relationship between crank and variator position. Thats why its important to lock the crank the whole time so you have a fixed reference point. What the cam is doing under that cam cover isn't important!

Sorry if it's obvious, but when you're spinning the crankshaft looking for TDC, how do you know the TDC is for the compression stroke and not the exhaust stroke?
@Mechanicalcircus1

Removing the spark plugs does two things: Make engine easier to turn (always turn forward) and allows you to feel air coming out spark plug hole only when you're on compression stroke. Easy peasy.

@TheBlibo

Never did like belts since I watched a belt under a strobe light the belt would have a standing wave at various rpm which is not great for holding a steady timing like a gear or chain would admittedly this was on various car engines but the same will happen on a ducati, they should have stuck to the bevel drive not a rubber band. I don't think I have found a truck, plant or any heavy duty diesel using a rubber band and control of valve timing is less critical on them than a high speed petrol engine

Thats the recommendation, the problem you have is if it isn't done by the dealer or a recognised repair shop you will void any warranty if you have any. The 3 years is a bit of a joke in my opinion if you haven't covered the mileage. That's how the dealers make their money. That big shiny showroom has to be paid for somehow 😁
