It has been 20 years since the last serve and volley players left tennis, we still can see them in senior for 10 years more until the last serve and volley match in history.
Jeez it's great watching these guys. I enjoy as much as watching today's top pros. Mac has perhaps one of the most distinctly recognizable playing styles in history.

Two great serve and volleyers. More fun to watch than pure power players.

Edberg was an all-time great, and the most graceful mover I've seen in any era. Nevertheless, though he beat Mac from 89 on, he was 1-7 with Mcenroe the first 8 times they played! Mac was incredible.
4:50 ball was clearly wide as a tennis player you just know it was impossible to be in

Mac was the purest talent i the woodie era...but Edberg is much younger? title should be , "A Superbrat and a Gentleman"

Mac was by far the superior player at their best (he owned Edberg until he reached the end of his career and was struggling), but Edberg was indeed a true gentleman - not like a gentleman fraud like Federer.

ugly forehand for McEnroe, something is wrong, even during his time, it’s not good
@KingCast655 жыл бұрын
You know you could say that. You can say Frances Tiafoe's FH is ugly too. But in Mac's case that shit worked until Big Power came along. Good placement and disguise buddy. He could take you up the line with it with total deception then come in for the easy volley putaway. And that's not ugly. That's beautiful.

@@KingCast65 it's a myth to say Mac couldn't handle power - it's not true. However I agree with you that it was effective. Connors himself (who hated Mac) said that Mac's groundstrokes were very underrated. Of course the people who always say these things - Federer/Roddick/Courier's backhand is no good, Mac/Edberg/Connors forehand was no good, are always complete hacks who can't play tennis at all. Those players can always say - it was good enough to win grand slam tournaments. Connors once snapped at a reporter who questioned his forehand: you think my forehands weak? You want to go out and hit forehands with me right now? lol.

@@datacipher Yah I don't mean to say he couldn't handle big power especially when he was at his peak, but he had to be totally on fire to do so especially as he aged. The US Open '90 v. Sampras. The '92 Wimby with Andre..... He couldn't sustain at that point. And we know he had to be on fire to deal with Lendl and his H2H with Ivan was not the best
@datacipher5 жыл бұрын
Christopher King yes I agree with that. He was a couple steps slower after 85 - he and even Lendl have acknowledged that.. and his serve was never quite as consistent or fast. So that alone dropped him down... and indeed, he needed to be at his best as the power level stepped up in general. Lendl hit the ball as hard as anyone ever has, but the rank and file players all hit the ball much harder. I recall mac once saying in Canada around 91 that of course the young players always try to beat him with power because they know they can’t beat him in other ways, and if his game was in order that was fine, but if he was off, then it could be a real problem and the young big hitters could get to him.

Pat Cash in his construct of the perfect player , available on KZbin, wants the forehand to be that of McEnroe.
