Evidently, a spoonful of sugar does work. Robert Sherman, one of the songwriters, had children that were due to receive the polio vaccine. He entered his son's bedroom and asked if it hurt, thinking he had gotten a shot. The child informed him that the medicine was instead placed on top of a cube of sugar and he simply swallowed it. Thus, the song was born

But I can say that it works literally as well ! As a little girl , it took years to learn how to swallow Panadol and Ibuprofen tablets when I was sick but thanks to that song , one day when I was sick and at my Grandma's house watching the movie , my Grandma had come up with the idea to try crushing it up and having it on a teaspoon with either a sugar , or with Nutella . I am much older now of course (21 years old) and can swallow tablets fine but I still don't like the taste of any medicine , so I always follow up that horrible taste with either a teaspoonful of sugar or Nutella similar to what I used to do as a kid 😂

In 1978, I went to NYC with a high school theater appreciation class to see Broadway shows. During the ride in the school van, our teacher explained we'd probably see lots of celebrities walking about so don't start screaming because New Yorkers respect their privacy. Sure enough on the way to the theater, we saw a famous soap opera actress and a student started screaming like she saw a Beatle. So embarrassing. When we returned to the hotel nearby after the show, it wasnt until a few of us were in the small elevator that I noticed Hermione Baddeley (Ellen, the maid). I looked around to see if anyone else recognized her which gave me time not to overreact. When no one even the girl who screamed earlier didnt seem to know who she was, I spoke up, called her by her name, and praised her performance. She was so giddy. She said she was living in the hotel and working somewhere.

So growing up, life was a lot. Nothing was guaranteed, nothing was sure... Except for this movie. I watched it over and over because i knew what was coming and it made me feel safe. Bert always felt so familiar to me. Like, especially as an adult, i relate to Bert so much. When you look at him, he's alone, covered in suit, has a very 'lowly' job, art wasn't valued back then, his talents weren't Truley appreciated. but he laughed; he smiled; he danced, and he made everyone around him feel safe and loved. To this day, Mary Poppins in my favorite movie and Bert is my favorite character of all time. Seeing another adult, watch this movie and fall in love with it makes me so happy. Julie Andrews, who played Mary Poppins, was hoping to start in My Fair Lady, but they (Mr Mayer) gave the part to Audrey Hepburn, who was very cute, but whose singing had to be dubbed. She was very disappointed. Disney offered her the part in Mary Poppins, and she was free, so she got the part. Later, she won the academy award for it (over Audrey Hepburn). In her acceptance speech, she thanked Mr. Meyer "who made this all possible" (by NOT hiring her for My Fair Lady).

While the President and his son do mention the Boston Tea Party of 1773, I wonder if the line about it causing a run on the bank actually happened.

This movie makes me so damn emotional. It takes me back to my childhood before abuse and trauma hit me and my life. When both my parents were still alive This movie was my favorite movie as a little girl. I was OBSESSED with it. So obsessed in fact that at the age of 2 and a half I could quote the movie. I would watch it, they would then rewind the video tape and start the movie all over again 😂 When I hear let's go fly a kite I start tearing up. This was the movie Julie Andrews won her Oscar for. Then the next year she appeared in the sound of music. One year after the other back to back. It was also her first ever two movies. What a way to start a career. When I was a little girl I actually thought sound of music was the sequel to Mary Poppins and that Mary had gone to work for the von trapp family and had changed her name to Maria Sorry for the long comment. This movie will forever mean the world to me and will always manage to make my heart smile

This was the first movie I ever saw, and it has continued to bring me joy ever since. For years as a child I didn't realize that Mary Poppins was played by the same actress who played Maria in The Sound of Music... though there are definitely some plot similarities in the two films! It's wonderful to see that the magic has continued to hold up in this film, and if Walt Disney had never made another movie other than this he still would have earned his accolades.

By '68-'69 or so, we as a culture were so SICK of The Sound of Music playing theaters for literally four years in some cities, there was a backlash of jokes about Julie Andrews only playing sweet, sappy G-rated roles (which were a dirty word in the gritty 60's-70's), and that retroactively extended to jokes about Mary Poppins twittering about spoonfuls of sugar. It wasn't until Disney's 80's rush of rereleases that we got a good look at it--I remember being in an audience that had never seen the movie except by reputation, and Sammy's experience was ours.

@35:50 they're doing a civilian version of what's called Cashiering. It was something that was done for members of the military in Europe as punishment (and dismissal), but they would rip off a person's insignia, stripping them of their rank, tear badges and medals off the uniform, break their sword, knock their covers off their heads, slice off buttons, basically destroying the uniform, etc. It was done in front of everyone as a means of degradation.

I also like the musical Grease (1978) which has a lot of fun songs and dancing. Grease is my second favourite musical. I would love if you would consider reacting to these two musicals!

Nanny McPhee is a similar story, but the nanny in this film has a few warts. Mary Poppins Returns isn't well-liked, but what I did love about it was that they brought back a few of the original actors from the first movie 50 years later. The movie "Saving Mr. Banks" is not only about the origin of the Mary Poppins story, but also how Disney managed to negotiate the rights to make that movie. In the meantime, while Mary Poppins was still in the planning stages, there was another movie in the works called "Bedknobs and Broomsticks." In this movie, you get to see the actor David Tomlinson again who co-stars with Angela Lansbury. It was put on hold for several years even after Mary Poppins was completed. Mary Poppins is tough to top because it's "practically perfect in every way."

This was the last role for the actress who played ‘The Bird Woman.’ Her name was Jane Darwell. I think she was a prominent character actress in Old Hollywood. Probably, her most important role today, outside of The Bird Woman, is Ma Joad in the 1940 movie The Grapes of Wrath.

Another great Disney Musical from this era to watch is Bedknobs and Broomsticks with Angela Lansbury and David Tomlinson (the father) from this film. Many facts for this film: 1. P.L. Travers who was the original author of the Mary Poppins books had refused Walt Disney’s offers to make it into a film for over 20 years and so in the late 50’s he actually went to meet her in her London home hoping to use his personal charm on her and so soon after she finally gave him the rights to make the film, but during the early stages Robert Sherman who was one of the songwriters along with his brother said “She was a witch” and absolutely hated everything everyone was wanting to do, but she was basically only a consultant, after the release of the film she wanted nothing to do with it and in the early 90’s she allowed the studio to only do two things in regards to the property.If they so choose to a sequel film could be done. A broadway show, but no one involved with the original film could be part of that project, 2. When Glynis Johns received the call from Walt to be in the film she though she was going to play Mary Poppins, but Walt wanted her as the mother and so she said as a little incentive if she could haver her own song for the film and so the Sherman Brothers rewrote a previous unused song called “Practically Perfect” into “Sister Suffragette”, 3. Many songs and sequences for the film were thought up including where the children would spin a compass and it would take them to different areas and a different song for each area where one was called North Pole Polka, another Tea in Timbuktu, while the other two unused songs found their way in other Disney films later on with The Land of Sand being reworked to become Trust in Me in The Jungle Book from 1967, and The Beautiful Briny Sea would end up in Bedknobs and Broomsticks, 4. Several of the women who wait outside to apply for the nanny position are actually men because they couldn’t find enough ugly women. 5. In the animation sequence people like the songwriters, Julie Andrews and multiple others do voices and David Tomlinson voiced Mary Poppins Parrot umbrella at the end. 6. The choreographers Marx Beraux and Dee Dee Wood would go on to do the choreography for many other classic musicals including: The Sound of Music, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and The Slipper and the Rose and Dick Van Dyke had no previous dance training, 7. Several of the chimney sweep dancers were the old men on the bench in Enchanted during the song “That’s How you Know” 8. The woman who played the Bird Woman is legendary Actress Jane Darwell who starred in over 100 films and at the time she had been retired, but Walt Disney convinced her to be in the film and personally sent a car to pick her up everyday and treated her like Royalty. 9. Besides being Bert in the film Dick Van Dyke as Mr Dawes Sr when he would be dressed up in all that makeup he would troll the backlot tours by making them think it was an old man and cross in front of them as slowly as possible then right as they were about to pull away he would sprint off as quickly as possible and that credit was at the end of the end credits as Navckid Keyd and then the letters unscramble themselves to spell Dick Van Dyke plus there is a chorus reprise of Let’s Go Fly a Kite: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gaWXeqJ5hN-ng7c 10. Julie Andrews was hoping to be in the film version of My Fair Lady which she started on broadway, but Warner Brothers wanted someone who was actually a star as Julie had not been in a film yet so they went with Audrey Hepburn. However the story doesn’t end there as Julie Andrews was nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy opposite Audrey Hepburn for My Fair Lady and she won and in her acceptance speech she ended it with “Finally my thanks to a man who made a wonderful movie and made this all possible in the first place Mr Jack Warner.” and everyone lost it including Mr Warner with him laughing, Then at the Academy Awards this film was nominated for 13 Oscars and won for: Best Actress, Best Song for Chim Chim Cheree, Best Original Score, Best Visual Effects, and Best Film Editing. It was nominated additionally for Best Picture, Director, Art Direction, Costume Design, Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Scoring Treatment, and Sound unfortunately losing many of those to My Fair Lady. 11. Know before Walt had chose Julie to play Mary Poppins several people that were thought of as possibilities included: Bette Davis and Angela Lansbury then one sunday night the Sherman Brothers saw on the Ed Sullivan Show an excerpt performance of a broadway show called Camelot where Julie Andrews was the lead actress and they knew immediately she was the one so the next day they marched into Don Dagradi’s (another writer on the film) office and he said to them did you see the Ed Sullivan Show last night so all three of them went to Walt’s office and so then Walt went to see a performance of Camelot in New York and met with her after the show and was able to convince her to be in the film and Walt was willingly to wait as she was pregnant at the time and Julie’s husband then also ended up part of the film as he designed all of the costumes, 12. Dick Van Dyke ended up in the film because of an article Walt read of how he didn’t like that films then were becoming as he described as “dirty pictures” also it helped that basically everyone knew who Dick was as he had a hit tv show with The Dick Van Dyke show and this was only his second film after being in a film version of the broadway show Bye Bye Birdie, 13. Ed Wynn (Uncle Albert) was the Mad Hatter Walt always wanted to have him in something he appeared in several other Disney films including: The Absent Minded Professor, Son of Flubber, and Babes in Toyland.

When they were in the early development stages of the film Walt gave his songwriters Richard and Robert Sherman a copy of the book to read of what they thought would be good material for the film and they underlined six chapters in red crayon and when they went in to see Walt they handed him the book and he chuckled because in his copy of the book he had underlined the exact same six chapters in red crayon as well. 15. The inspiration for the song “A Spoonful of Sugar came with Richard Sherman’s son came home from school and he asked what had happened to learn he had been given the polio vaccine to which his dad asked if it hurt and he explained no they put the medicine on a sugar cube on a spoon and we swallowed it. A literal spoonful of sugar helped the medicine go down. 16. The inspiration for the song Let’s Go Fly a Kite was actually from the Sherman Brothers childhood as there dad as they said would make these wonderful kites that would fly all day, 17. The inspiration for the song Step in Time is actually an old english folk song called Knees Up Mother Brown and the Sherman Brothers learned about it as Peter Ellenshaw who did the vidual effects and matte paintings and glass paintings for the film was basically they resident Brit taught the dance to on3 of the writer Bill Walsh and Walt Disney and Richard Sherman saw the three of them with their elbows linked together in the office kicking their knees up, 18. The inspiration for the song Supercalifragilisticexpiladocious was the Sherman Brothers wanted to make it so Mary Poppins gave the children a gift in the form of this ridiculously long word and the medley for it was two British Folk Songs: Boiled Beef and Carrots along with Any Old Iron, 19. When the brothers were playing songs for Walt one day a couple hours they thought would work for the film at the end he asked them to play that bird woman song again to which Walt walked over to the window saying “That’s what it’s all about isn’t it?” Referring to the theme of the film. It was Walt’s favorite song the studio ever made and every Friday Walt would meet with the brother and just talk about things going on at the studio and other projects and at the end of their meeting he would always ask them to play the song by saying “Play it” and when they finished it he would send them off saying “Have a good weekend boys.” 20. Even after Walt’s death Richard Sherman would still go into Walt’s office on a Friday afternoon and play the song and on what would have been Walt’s 100th Birthday he went the celebration when the dedication of the Partners statue was unveiled and played the song saying it was only for Walt at the end of the song he blew a kiss to the statue said Happy Birthday and walked off, but he was told later on that when he was nearing the end of the song out of the clear blue sky a single bird came down near the piano and off back into the sky. 21. All of Mary Poppins was filmed indoors. 22. The old woman that children encountered when they run away from the bank is Actress who voiced Cruella DeVil in “101 Dalmatians”. 23. When on the carousel the horses match their personalities, 24. The two children in the film Karen Dotrice and Matthew Garber appeared in a total of three films for Disney together this was their second the previous is The Three Lives of Thomasina and the latter was The Gnome Mobile unfortunately Matthew would die of Food poisoning in the 70’s, 25. The bird that sings with Julie Andrews during a Spoonful of Sugar is actually an animatronic and Julie also did the whistling for the bird, 26. The reason the waiters are penguins is Walt saw a storyboard where these four male waiters were singing to Mary Poppins and remarked “Waiters always remind me of penguins”. I've seen this movie probably 1000 times, that's not even an exaggeration but I also really enjoyed the more recent sequel Mary Poppins returns. If you have time I would suggest giving that one a chance too with an open mind. It stars Emily Blunt and Lin Manuel Miranda, it's very different but very good and also well made. Don't know if that's the actual reason, but whenever I see someone with their feet this open naturally - I assume they are highly trained in dance, usually Ballet. I danced for 5-6 years and never had such walk, but I saw it all the time in the older groups

It is special. It might be even more special if it had actually been Julie Andrews instead of her stunt double. But that's show biz. The opening shot is a large painting on glass with a void through which is film of Mary Poppins sitting on the cloud, then panning down to another void with film of people in the park. A review from the time highlighted the rooftop sequence as "the reason movies were invented". The songs are catchy, which is probably why the film won Oscars for both best score and best song.

Me again...even with everything I understand about the technical aspects of movie making, there are STILL things about this movie I don't know how they did. Bert and Mary Poppins friendship goes back a long way, I think, and Bert wound up being one of her most successful assignments. CreditMarc Breaux and Dee Dee Wood for the dancing. They were dancers under choreographer Michael Kidd early in their careers.

This was my childhood. You can blame Julie Andrews and Disney for my obsession with musicals and opera. Started with this film, the Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast. Then I found Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables at the ripe old ages of five and eight. Natural progression from musicals to opera after that. Then again I just adore music.

The thing of spoonfull of sugar is, if I'm not wrong, a way used for make kids take medicine : sugar was ad on it for making taste better. In fact, the movie with Emily Blunt isn't a remake but a sequel of this movie. Dick Van Dyke aka Bert and Mr Dawes Sr appears in it as Mr Dawes Jr and the actress who played Jane makes a cameo. Unfortunately, the actor who played Michael is dead at 21. After seeing that movie, you have to see the sequel but also the two movies of " Nanny McPhee ". In France, where I live, we have a series called " Josephine, guardian angel " where the main character has a bag like Mary Poppins' but smaller

I saw MARY POPPINS when it came out in 1964, and from the beginning, I had the sense of it becoming a new WIZARD OF OZ. The actor who portrayed Bert was Dick Van Dyke, who was already known for his work on television in his own show, THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW. He had also appeared in a few movies, including WHAT A WAY TO GO before this one. Also, he is an accomplished artist and cartoonist. But the artwork used in the sidewalk chalk sequence was done by the Disney staff. The integration of the live action and animation in the Jolly Holiday chalk drawing sequence was accomplished by the Blue Screen Sodium Matte process, developed by Walt Disney's original partner, Ub Iwerks. He won the Academy Award for developing this process that was also used in Alfred Hitchcock's THE BIRDS, which came out the year before.

Step in Time took 6 weeks to get right and everyone loves Dick Van Dyke for his dancing but HE'S NEVER HAD A DANCING LESSON IN HIS LIFE he just moves his body to the music his role in this is the epitome of living a happy life doing what u like and liking what u do he bounces around to whatever "job" he wants whether it actually pays money or not The effects were way ahead of their time so was the whole movie itself

'Mary Poppins Returns' is not a remake; it's a sequel that takes place 25 years after the events in this film. Karen Dotrice (Jane Banks in this film) has a cameo, as do the penguins. They also recreated the Cherry Tree Lane set exactly has seen here. The act of a suffragette chaining herself to the Prime Minister's carriage may seem drastic these days, but it was mild compared to what some women did in order to obtain the right to vote. And some of the punishments they received were absolutely horrific. One woman, Emily Wilding Davison, ran out onto the racecourse at the Derby, and was knocked down by the King's horse. She died three days later. I would imagine it depends on the medicine; there are probably ones which do not mix with sugar. The newest Mary Poppins movie is actually a sequel and it's absolute trash. I do NOT suggest you watch it, although I can't stop you. I do recommend "Saving Mr. Banks" instead. Feed The Birds is by far my favorite song. I tear up every time I hear it. Fun Fact: The filmmakers didn't inform Karen Dotrice (Jane) or Matthew Garber (Michael) about some "surprises" that were going to show up in the movie. Karen's dumbfounded look when Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews) takes out item after item from the carpet bag and her little scream when Mary Poppins gave them medicines of different colors were genuine. The children also weren't told who was acting as Mr. Dawes, Sr. (Dick Van Dyke), and were worried that the horrible old man was going to fall down and die at any moment.
