In Toy Story 2, the other Buzz who is not aware that he is a toy tries to arrest Andy's Buzz because he violated the code that states that: 'all space rangers are to be in hypersleep until awakened by authorized personnel.', I guess that in his programming, all Buzzes, and maybe some other toys, follow that protocol and wait until the 'Demo' setting is turned off by a human.

To the people asking why the Buzz and Barbies were "alive" in Toy Story 2, I think they got enough love from the kids that went into the store. I know for sure when I was a kid I would stare and beg my mom for the toys being displayed because I really really wanted them. Maybe those emotions were enough for them to come alive? Same thing with the little alien toys in the claw game, I would spend a lot of money trying to get toys out of the machine because I would love to have one.

Sid loves to mangle his toys and create frankenstein monsters, hence why they come to life as frankenstein monsters. But of course sid must love them to an extent after creating them, so they would come to life looking scary, but not being so bad since they still come from a place of love. Sid is a child still, the toys aren't human to him so he just sees it as fantasy and roleplay, a form of catharsis from his life. But when he mangles his sisters toys and combines them with his own, he made something that he must be proud of to an extent, since he keeps them around. They seem to be birthed from curiosity and pride rather than love and play, not inherently evil, and so still capable of doing good. But they are still neglected and stunted in their spiritual development, taking away their ability to speak and possibly impairing their social skills with other toys. They live, they just don't live well because they were created as monstrosities and will always be misfit toys, much like sid must feel like a misfit child. They are angry at their creator, much like sid seems to be angry at his mom. They are just an embodiment of his base spirit, but capable of free thought and will.

+Luke Williams Interesting question. I've heard people wonder if toys that people made themselves rather than bought would be alive. Judging by Sid's toys at least, it appears that most parts of a toy go into stasis when dismembered, but gain life again if put back onto a body, even if it's a different body from before. When Sid cut Jamie's head off, she acted dead until the other toys taped her head on, and those toys had obviously been taken apart and become new toys when reassembled. Also, Buzz and Woody's arms acted like severed arms, but they could use them once reattached. I don't know about Hannah's other dolls, who seemed to survive losing their heads, but then again, it seems to depend on the toy, Potato Head's pieces acted like parts of his body even if they weren't attached to him.

You know what, though...Just for you, I shall broaden my definition of "character": "A character toy is any toy which has a well-defined "personality," and/or can communicate, either through words or pictures." Lego bricks cannot speak or otherwise communicate, nor do they have a personality. This is why they cannot come to life. Etch-a-Sketch, on the other hand, can communicate, and has developed an animus of its own. (Actually, that's why its pictures are so much better than when the typical person tries to draw with it! Not like me, though--the most I can get is a squiggly blob before I chuck the thing to one side in frustration.)

Think about it from Buzz's point of view. When he was a "space ranger", he believed he was on some sort of mission. Being on a mission, means you have to study your surroundings. If he sees every toy fall down in the presence of a human, he will do the same thing too. It is a way of adapting to your surroundings.

My one counter argument that I don't really see in this comment section. If freezing is a rule that all toys must follow (especially the branding ones who do not know they are toys) then how did Woody and Sid's toys break from it? The fact that they know they are rules and therefore must be followed above all else would suggest that their breaking of these rules is optional. Meaning a person who does not know the rule would not follow it on instinct. This idea also makes the crossing the road scene suspect. Yeah they are inside cones, but Slinky is clearly shown beneath two cones and his spring showing. The other's leg's are showing, this would suggest that this is not an inherent rule of their existence.

Maybe this is weird, but the only explanation i can come up with, is that since that buzz was at display to show of the new tool belt, the kids must stick to that display "box", and must have given it love in that way. Not much, but he is not supposed to move at all, so he must have collected and stored love. concidering how popular buzz must have been, there were probably around 10 to 20 kids starring at him every day or so.

Well, all his toys were originally his little sisters, who obviously cares for her toys. Sid takes them and ruins them, which would make his little sister afraid. But, she doesn't seem to actually replace those ruined toys. So maybe those toys that are now Sid's, they still have life because Sid's sister still cares for them, just can't find the toys and their original parts of the toy to have someone fix them for her, so she could play with them again.

I thought Buzz used to freeze simply because he was smart. I assumed that he understood that there were creatures larger and the same size as him, this he would naturally try to figure out a way to adapt to the environment with the creatures the same size as him. I thought he assumed there was an obvious environmental activity on the planet that he simply used to just fit in. However, after looking at this video, I'm more convinced that Buzz was just being a toy whether he liked it or not.

Mr. Potatoe head having his personality makes sense because he is literally just a guy who is a potatoe. The piggy bank came to life cuz he was played with so he has his own personality kind of based on the way he is played with (he is a villain when played with). Slinky is supposed to be a slinky, not a dog. But Rex was made to be a dinosaur. Wouldn’t he innately roar? Andy even plays with him as a dinosaur. I think the joke with Rex was that he is somehow defective.

Actually, my own theory goes that Buzz freezes because that -deep down, he actually knows that he is a toy, but his franchise's history is so strongly built into him that he compulsively denies it.Remember the ‘Factory Setting’ in TY3? There’s your answer right there in black and white! Think about it; the ONLY other toys we see in the movies do what Buzz does is Zurg and another Buzz Lightyear action figure. We also never see any other toys quite like the Buzz Lightyear franchise, so I think its safe to say that what happens with Buzz is just what happens with all toys like him. Actually, the more that I think about it, I think a sub-theme of the first movie is Denial; Buzz is an allegory for someone who’s been living a fantasy and cannot accept reality and so puts on an act -no matter how ridiculous, he knows what he is but cannot accept it, and so sticks to the facade until he is met with irrefutable evidence to the contrary -first the TV commercial and then finally his last, boldest, and most extreme act of denial; his attempt to actually fly, which both literally and metaphorically breaks him when he fails, causing him to spiral into depression before Woody eventually helps him find new purpose in life. Wow, in that light the movie is actually more adult and intelligent than I thought!

For everyone asking how the rest of the roundup gang from toy story 2 come to life is because they see the kids love them from they're glass boxes, like the collector had to have watched something about them at least a few times and as other kids said, kids gave them energy by loving them while they're in the boxes but there is one MASSIVE plot hole, Weezy, he was apparently "shelved" by Andy's mom for what seems like only a year or two but yet he's probably gotten ALOT WORSE than he already was implicating that he's dying.....And for the Battlesaurs, I don't know them niggas just crazy

I consider it similar to the Doctor Who Weeping Angels, although a "soft" version. Weeping Angels, when looked at with the eyes of any living creature, even through a video feed, will immediately freeze into a statue. As described by the Doctor, "…no choice, it's a fact of their biology. In the gaze of any living thing, they literally turn to stone." I think Toy Story toys are a similar way; when a human is about to see them, they are compelled by their very instinct-if not their very physical being-to immediately freeze without a conscious say in the matter, almost like those "fainting goats" (explaining Buzz). Why is another story, and is not something I've bothered trying to explain. However, after a toy has been a toy for a while, after they start understanding "the game" and "the rules", they are capable of realizing their instincts are trying to make them freeze, but have the option to, y'know…maybe not quite agree and just decide not to (explaining all of those other scenes).

At least in someway, right before Woody reveals himself to Sid he tells the other toys that they're going to "need to break some rules" we argue one of those rules is revealing themselves. Fight, flight or freeze is a psychological response, not a chosen response. But that doesn't mean one can't be conditioned to react different with training. If someone who normally triggered a flight response when threatened underwent extensive personal defense training, they may eventually find that they administer a fight response.

+Rose Johnson I don't think it's trained as you would train a skill. More as he is trained by realizing that the kids are not a threat so he doesn't have to freeze like a deer in headlights each time he sees a kid. Using this training he can come to life to talk to Sid to save the toys.

I don't think this really explains it. If the toys have to make the conscious choice to freeze, but Buzz doesn't believe he's a toy, then, well... the fact that he is a toy isn't enough to give him a reason to freeze if he doesn't believe it. The theory that I had always held was that it's sort of an unconscious response that all toys have -- like the fight-or-flight thing, except, instead of trying to avoid a threat, this is just... a thing that toys do. They freeze in front of humans, without thinking about it. As for how they could reveal themselves to Sid? I think they can remain un-frozen if they really will themselves to. Meaning that, by default, they all freeze, unless they consciously choose to NOT freeze. Freezing is automatic unless they try to resist it. Therefore, Buzz freezes without thinking about it and possibly without even realizing he's doing it.

+EmpressKaga I think we do address this concept in the video, you're absolutely correct about the "fight or flight" response. It's an instinctive reaction. With of course "freeze" actually being a third possible reaction in the equation. And it could take conditioning to finally overcome the instinct response. Woody has spent so much time around humans that he no longer fears them. So he can choose. Much like someone who spent extensive time learning some variation of self defense. Prior to training maybe they would flee in the event of an attack. But with training and established confidence that reaction could shift over time.
