In relation to Ben’s question about if a headmaster gets a portrait when they retire, I feel like the better question is, do the headmasters ever retire? Or do all of them just die? With how badly Hogwarts is run and the amount of deaths, I would not be the least bit surprised if there’s never been a headmaster that retired, they’ve all just simply died.

I looked at some of the books that mention previous headmasters though not all occurrences some fan wikis and Wizarding World, the only reference to retirement of a headmaster I found was about Dippet but it was a newspaper easter egg in one of the movies so may or may not be canon. Given lack of evidence to the contrary I think it is for life, unless the ministry sacks you like Lucious attempts in book 3.
