I, in my incredibly small knowlegde of Harry Potter, like to think that the reason the cruciatus curse doens't work on Harry, whilst he is lying "dead" is because Voldemort is convinced he is dead, and therefore doesn't believe it will work.

Back to add my own theory: Crouch Jr isn't just doing it for his own enjoyment, but to sort of get back at his father. He was kept under the Imperius Curse for years. Maybe after that long, even if he's evil, he doesn't think people should be forced to another's will, and is actually training them to fight it off. Remember, he puts Harry under multiple times just to see him do it more. And I doubt it's to try again. He knows that the more you get put under, the easier it gets to shake it off.
@CroobieLetter
@CroobieLetter 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think Harry is bad at Occlumency. For the same reason you stated he resisted the Imperius Curse: Trust. He trusts Remus Lupin, he does not trust Severus Snape. Also he was far more motivated to learn the Patronus spell because quidditch is everything to him. On the other hand Occlumency, he kind of admits to himself he *wants* to eavesdrop on Voldemort.

makes sense. he thinks Snape is evil, he feels his scar hurts and he has more dreams after his lessons, like his mind has been weakened. he doesnt trust dumbledore, or himself he has the suspicion that the Occlumency was less for his protection than protecting others from him. he thinks voldemort might be possessing him. even after finding out that voldemort wasnt possessing him from Ginny, i doubt he fully believed in his Occulemcy lessons, despite what the order told him. the order told him almost nothing except to do something he hates if dumbledore taught harry occlumecy, harry probably could have done a lot better and the department of mysteries might never have happened

I think the Weasley's car gained some form of sentience due to a couple of things: 1) Arthur Weasley tinkered with it whenever he had a spare moment of time away from his job and family, giving it capabilities like flight and invisibilty 2) The car was left in the Forbidden forest and as confusing as this may sound, could have very well absorbed enough wild magical energy from the forest and Hogwarts to gain an awareness of sorts. Of course that's just my opinion.
@DavidJones-tp7td
@DavidJones-tp7td 3 жыл бұрын
I agree, mostly. A child that had been abused and/or neglected as much as Harry would see anything that seems perfectly trustworthy as a trap. He would view everyone and everything with suspicion. His friends had to earn his trust. Rom did this by not asking for anything and (Ron being Ron) giving indications that he (Ron) didn't fully trust Harry either. Everyone that tried to push friendship on Harry (like Draco) was immediately rejected by Harry. His past has taught him that overt kindness is just the calm before the storm. While Harry is a fictional character, his mindset is all to real form many people and usually because they have endured the same type of early life as our fictitious friend.

Totally agree! In fact, it's so ingrained in him that he even does it unconsciously. When Petunia cut his hair short to get rid of it sticking up, Harry grew it back without knowing how it happened. When Dudley pushes Harry out of the way at the zoo, Harry responds to it by making the glass disappear without even knowing how he did it. He was resisting their control even then.

I think it was still his mother's love that protected Harry when Voldemort killed him in the forest. Notice JUST BEFORE Harry meets Voldy, he sees the people he loves most in their spirit form....his mother and father, Remus and Sirius. He says "I am ready to die" and he kisses the Snitch that secretly holds the Resurrection Stone. The stone emerges from the Snitch with the Deathly Hallows symbol engraved on it...and his parents and Remus and Sirius come forth from it. His mother is the first one he sees....the first one he reaches for....and when he asks why they are there, she tells him they never left him. When Harry asks if they will stay with him, his father reassures him that they will...and his mother says "always". I think their love for Harry is what protected him from Voldemort and the curses. And it is another mother's love...Narcissa Malfoy's...that also saved Harry. When Voldy asked if Harry was truly dead, she checks him and EVEN KNOWING that Harry still lives, she lies to Voldemort and tells him that Harry died.

I recall hearing that the imperious curse works by creating a sense of bliss in the individual with regards to obeying orders. Given his upbringing he typically experienced a lot of discomfort in obeying instructions. Like cooking breakfast for the dursleys , etc. I think this factored in to his ability to resist the imperious curse, and maybe even his character. The closest feeling of bliss we ever see harry experience is when he is looking at the mirror of erised . And then riding buckbeak.

In the whole series, it's said a lot that Harry was the only person who survived the Killing Curse, but I think Voldemort did too. @@FlochStanThe thing is that in the Harry Potter series, the only instance we see something like that happen is when, at the end of Deathly Hallows, Harry is in the strangely light version of King's Cross, but I don't think that even in that instance Harry is truly dead. I think that his perception is being altered a little by his mind, and that he's actually in the same limbo that Voldemort is in, albeit in a brighter version than Voldemort's, due to his use of horcruxes. This would be the only way Harry and Dumbledore would be able to see Voldemort's soul there, since it couldn't have been in heaven/the afterlife. As for Dumbledore's appearance there, I think that Dumbledore was also stuck in that very same limbo, due to his regret over not telling anything to Harry, and, in part, the death of Ariana. This means that when Dumbledore goes off into the light after giving the truth to Harry, he's actually going to the actual afterlife, leaving Harry with a choice: the afterlife, where he can go by following Dumbledore, and the real world, where he chooses to go. Another thing is that it's well established that due to his horcruxes, Voldemort could never have a proper death. This means that the only explanation left is that the horcruxes actually worked, though far worse than Harry's charm.

1:14 actually it is easy to explain how. It is in the books. The pain he feels due to his magical connection with Tom, is not his pain. Tom is in pain being in contact with him, and part of Tom being inside of harry and without any protection, tom soul is tortured, and he feels his pain. After the part ot Tom's soul leaves his body, and the connection is no more, he is both immune to Tom's torture, and he feels no more pain in his head. When Harry was literally burning Tom and Quirrell alive with his bare hands, Harry lost consciousness because of the pain, but not from his pain, but from pain he felt in Tom.

Also, I thought he did this to heighten the hype arround Harry, so that when he fell, he would fall HARD, disheartening everyone.

I thought about this and I think you might be right. I also think that your explanation of this should shed some new light on how students are actually sorted into Gryffindor and Slytherin. We always hear about how Gryffindors are sorted for their bravery and Slytherins for their ambition (aka, kid's evil and I don't know where else to put him). But one of the things that either Slughorn or Nigelus - I can't remember who - remarks on is that Slytherins have their own kind of bravery. Maybe what makes Gryffindors, Gryffindors is that they don't necessarily follow authority because of the status quo - and neither do Slytherins. Slytherins won't necessarily follow authority figures because they are better, or know more, or are more powerful, or what have you. Where as Gryffindors won't necessarily follow authority figures, if they don't believe in what they figure is asking. Hermione refuses the status quo of house elf enslavement, Neville goes against the status quo of Harry getting into trouble with no one stopping him, Fred and George go against the status quo . . . because it's the status quo, I guess. Anyway, if you read this, it's just something to think about. Maybe we've been sorting people into houses for the wrong reasons.

Here's an idea that play upon your theory of Voldemort's soul helping Harry... What is the Imperious curse latches onto the person's soul. If that were the case, Harry - having 2 souls at the time - would only have been partially affected by the curse, which may not have been enough to make the compulsion stick to him. Or, the Imperious latched onto Voldemort instead of Harry. Either way, the full effect of the spell was never on Harry. And remember, just because it was a part of Voldemort's soul, doesn't mean that it was conscious or sentient of who the attacker was. Voldemort's soul would have wanted to resist any mental intrusion or control - just like the real Voldemort. It wouldn't neccessarily known that the attack came from a Death Eater or Voldemort himself. Remember - Voldemort wasn't aware of his Horcrux's status until they were actually destroyed - even then, I don't think he realized it when the first two were destroyed - only once more of them were destroyed did he even know what was going on - so the soul fragments AREN'T aware of each other.

I suspect that being as Harry is essentially a horcrux for Voldemort it would make him essentially bullet proof against most of Voldemorts magic. And let's face it Bertie Jr. Could Never match up to Voldemort. Essentially Harry has already been shot full of dark magic as an infant. I'd think he would be almost bullet proof.

For the cruciatus curse to work you have to want to cause pain and torture him. So the curse would not work if you think the other was dead, rigth? Voldemort used it against a perceived dead body, so he wasn't thinking of torturing him or causing him pain, so he wasn't casting the spell right and therefore it didn't harm Harry as much.

Bellatrix told Harry when he tried to use the torture curse on her that you need to WANT to cause pain to make it work which is why his use was weak. That's why I feel why Voldy using it on Harry when he was assumed dead didn't work. It was assumed by all even Voldemort that Harry was dead, he didn't WANT to cause pain because to him, it didn't matter because there was going to be no reaction. He just cast it out of reflex to prove that he won but he didn't desire pain because as far as he knew it would do nothing

I like to look at things a bit more mechanical. Like in Dungeons and Dragons terms. Harry has a high will power, and has a modifier bonus to it thanks to his mother's sacrifice. This means Harry has a much higher chance to resist things like Imperius than the normal wizard. So he doesn't have to roll as high on the D20, to resist spells. What happened in the class room? He rolled a Natural 20 on the die. which being generous he has a plus 10 at a minimum, and so he got 30 total. So this means he was utterly unaffected by the spell. This high modifier also explains why he resisted the other spells as well. On top of the fact that anyone using the Elder Wand now has a negative modifier when trying to use the wand since they are not the actual owner.

Here's what I think about the imperious curse thing. Short answer: Voldermort. Long answer: he has a piece of Voldermort's soul inside of him. Maybe this spell can only control only one person at a time. The sorting hat could easily see that piece, not to mention his wand: whose brother is the same core as Voldermort. Maybe that piece of soul was going into defense mode because it was under attack? It happened before at the battle of seven Potters, also with the other objects that has a piece soul in it.

The way I see it, if this was D&D Harry would just have a bunch of bonuses for his wisdom saving throw, it's not possible to attribute passing the saving throw to any particular one of those bonuses. In the case of not-Moody it would be partly because not-Moody was not trying to use full power on a student, and in the case of Lord Voldypants, it was because Voldy's magic has consistently never worked properly on Harry, so in both cases the saving throw would be easier.
@rishibeauty8889

I always thought that he survived them was because he is part Voldemort & Voldemort, or anyone, cant use them on themselves, especially since he is the Dark lord. Meaning, Voldy could never use it on himself to end his pain. Since Voldy’s soul is in pieces, any of the curses used against him doesnt fully work as long as other pieces are still out there. That was the whole reason to piece out his soul to begin with- cant be killed. Harry is the last piece.

I never thought about it. Accepting death as a friend would make someone a true master of death. Not only would itmake Harry the owner of all the Deathly Hallows, it would make him impervious to dark magic. Harry died the second time the killing curse was casted. Harry had the choice to stay dead. Chosen one, or not Harry was indeed a brave character
@ADHD_and_Crayons
@ADHD_and_Crayons 3 жыл бұрын
The wand failed to work the cruciatous curse after Harry died because Harry was no longer a horcrux housing an enemy soul; which allowed the wand to recognize its master, so the wand probably reabsorbed the curse. The killing curse worked because a piece of Tom's soul was in Harry & that soul piece is what the wand actually killed. It's then plausible to believe that a person that has 2 souls has at least a 50% chance of surviving the curse; since only 1 soul is targeted per each curse casting.

Isn't it also due to Lily's protection on Harry? At that point in time, Wormtail didn't yet bring Voldemort back yet with a sample of Harry's blood. It's like when Harry sacrificed himself for everyone in the castle by going to Voldemort in the dark forest in Deathly Hallows. When Voldemort and the Death Eaters went to the school with his body and the fight broke out, Voldemort and the Death Eaters couldn't land their curses or the curses weren't binding on the people who defended Hogwarts due to Harry's sacrifice and his protection being on them. True, the part about there being a voice when Moody/Crouch used the Imperious Curse on him in D.A.D.A seems like it could've been the Horcrux - - but Harry also always spoke up... He spoke up to Snape in his first lesson with him ("I don't know, I think Hermione does though why don't you try her?". It could be due to all three: Lily's protection, the Horcrux, and Harry's own values which he acts upon.

Tbh. If I'm not mistaken. That was part of the prophecy. Harry wasn't just the chosen one because his parents died and they way they died. He was the chosen one because his powers transcended even beyond Dumbledore. Let alone the dark arts. Also possibly why it was so easy for Snape to hate him - jealous of his power - angry of the ignorance to that power. So it makes sense that Harry is naturally immune or resistant to certain things.

I've had my own theory on this one since I first read the book (near release day)... I got as far as your ad for Bespoke before posting this, I wonder if our theories agree. It is 100% the Dursleys. The effect of the imperious curse makes you feel blissful. At ease for the release of responsibility... This feeling is 100% foreign to Harry due to his upbringing with the Dursleys, and his first foray into Wizarding being clouded by the one who tried to kill him as an infant. His whole life since then was preparation to combat evil, and that one in specific. Bliss? Contentment? Happiness? Without his friends, those are impossible for Harry. Imperious = defeated before it was ever cast. Thanks Dursleys.

I actually think he was playing his role, after all, no one, not even Dumbledore, knew he wasn’t the real Moody. So playing the role meant doing whatever moody would do, and moody probably had prepared a course schedule soon after the end of Harry’s 3rd year (which is a good guess for when Dumbledore would’ve sought him out after Remus quit due to Snape) and planning a schedule and course work for 7 different classes would take a lot of time to make. So moody probably had most or all of it prepped before he got jumped, and Barty Jr. used it as is, filled in the blanks, or tortured/imperious’d moody into finishing it.

This is maybe a more depressing take, but personally I've always felt Harry resisted the imperius curse so easily is the method theimperius curse uses to compel obedience, it's basically happiness/bliss/pleassure, something Harry's been denied pretty much his whole life. And by the end of the series, I truly think Harry just mistrusts being happy, after his first year of hogwarts he is instantly afraid his friends hate him after Dobby takes all the letters, year two has everyone in the class turn on him, year 3 he gets lied to by fudge, every time Harry has really opened and let himself be happy, it comes crashing down, thought he had a home away from the Dursley's in book 3, and that was ripped from him too. So the imperius curse just being..a carefree feeling makes Harry question it, and the second he's aware enough to question, realizes he doesn't want to do it. Edit: The main reason I feel this more than just the 'strength of character' argument, is because as Ben even points out later in this video, a lot of the main cast share a lot of the same traits as Harry, but most, sans perhaps Neville, at least are way more comfortable being happy. And even Neville, despite how rough his grandmother can be around the edges, I feel still felt loved by his family, still got gifts, like f rom his uncle algae, and perhaps that helps him also lean into it.

@@neemz0117There's logic to this, but I disagree because there are still much better ways to teach Harry. What Snape does in this is akin to teaching someone to swim by dropping them off the side of a boat in the middle of the ocean, instead of starting in the shallow end of a pool. Or trying to teach someone math by giving them a college level Calculus 3 test, instead of just starting with addition and subtraction. You're absolutely right that Harry wouldn't be getting any warning from Voldemort, but that doesn't mean that when _teaching_ someone how to do a thing, you should start by giving them the hardest lesson and discouraging them every step of the way.

So I just realised something (20 years later but whatever): This lesson is a perfect opportunity for Crouch Jr to try to put Harry under his command with the imperius curse. Dumbledore trust him completly and allow him to use a forbidden curse on all his students, including Harry. We know that someone can be kept under the imperius curse for month, even years without anyone notice it. So having Harry under the imperius curse would have secure his victory and Voldemort's plan : Harry wouldn't have tried to save more than 1 person from the mermaids because Crouch wouldn't allow him to. In the maze, harry wouldn't have tried to save the others either and certainly wouldn't allow Diggory to come with him. So Maugrey aka Crouch forced harry to try the imperius curse again and again and again (Harry is complety sore after this) not to train him but to try to get the best of him.

I'm pretty sure the reason he got so obsessed with Harry perfecting his resistance to the Imperius is the fact that he lived his whole life under it, so he couldn't help but admire Harry for being able to resist it first try even if only half way. I find really interesting how much Barty seemingly ended up really caring about Harry for someone that wanted him dead, ironically his advice for Harry was almost at the level of Lupin, meaning that among the teachers of Defense Harry had he was probably among the top three.

I think it's fitting Dumbledore was drawn to the two wizards who questioned the consequences, weighed the outcomes, but still chose to do what they knew was right. As if Dumbledore, in his age and wisdom, was drawn to them because they did what he could not. His sister's death weighed on him, but I believe that by watching Newt and Harry, Dumbledore believed he was atoning for his past by cultivating a new generation who would not fail to do what was right, no matter the cost. To do what he never did.
