For first-time watchers, please watch the full video. It is very useful. For repeat watchers, here's the summary ------------------------------------------- SHALARY Approach: S = Sell yourself (How you bring value to the table) H = Holding your ground (be assertive, but don't be arrogant) - See sample answer A = Avoid giving a number or a range L = Let them initiate the salary-related questions A = Answer w/ statement R = Research (Do your homework - Glassdoor, Payscale OR Talk to peers/friends) Y = Your non-verbal communication (body language and tone) - Give them a big smile ------------------------------------------- Sample Answer: I have very much enjoyed our conversation and I am very excited about the position and the company. It feels like we are a really good fit! If you do make me an offer, please know that I will seriously consider it. I am not here to waste your time. It is difficult for me to answer this at this stage. Salary for me is one part of the equation, and I would need to study the offer in its entirety to make an informed decision. I would love to talk numbers once an offer is on the table. But till then, it feels premature.

The tips indeed sound valuable. Unfortunately in India the HRs are only willing to hear the number or otherwise they don't move the candidature. I have experienced most wherein there 2nd question is what is my expectation. It's their KRA to hire the candidate at lowest amount possible and close the position with minimum TAT, they are least bothered if the candidate leaves after few months. Position closed, KRA achieved. Although, I am gonna try these in my next interaction. TIA

Hold your ground (be assertive, neither arrogant nor humble) 3. Avoid # or range 4. Let them initiate (the salary question) 5. Answer with statement (don't question directly to this question) 6. Research (research your market value from Glassdoor etc.) 7. Your BODY talks! (Give a big smile on this question) ___ Real time example of assertive statement: Answer # 1: I've very much enjoyed our conversations and I'm very excited about the position and the company; it feels like we are a really good fit! If you do make me an offer, please know that I will seriously consider it, I'm not here to waste your time. Answer # 2: (if they insist) It is difficult for me to answer this at this stage. Two questions rather observations regarding the salary expectations question: Many organisations have online application and current salary and expected salary are mandatory fields - one cannot submit application without answering these questions. So sometimes there is no way to get around this question. Also, if one does start the interview process without giving salary expectations and in the end company cannot meet even your current salary because they don't have budget, it does waste both parties time.
@SuperChargeYourself3 жыл бұрын
My recommendation: fill the form with a zero or write negotiable. And let them know what you make today, so they have an idea if it’s within their range. Do what feels right

In India, I don't think they want to offer you the best they can, at least I haven't seen any company in last 8 years of my career. They will hire you at the minimum possible pay and even after years of employment they will give the average raise yearly. When you try to leave the organisation, then only they will offer you counter salary. For them, if you aren't asking or regularly demanding better raises, they won't give it to you.
@SuperChargeYourself3 жыл бұрын
i appreciate your comment. I don't think it's safe to generalise how a whole country practises a certain exercise, based on a limited experience.. I've lived in India and have negotiated a raise and a promotion and a starting salary. It comes down to how you ask. If you believe you deserve more, you ask, nicely. If you believe they won't give it to you, then you won't ask. It's a choice. If they won't give you, at least you asked! It doesn't hurt.

In a number of states it's illegal to ask about your current salary. They can ask expectations, but not current compensation. This is due to the assumption that women get stuck in a lower pay range and never get to rise above their current bracket.

There are certain situations when HR expects a candidate to relocate from TIER 2 cities like Indore, Lucknow, Bhubaneswar to Bangalore , Mumbai, Gurgaon. Do you think without knowing the budget for that position one should commit. That can prove to be a big financial blunder. What that guy would do accepting a 30-40% hike while relocating to the most expensive city of Indian subcontinent. What you explain is the ideal scenario that all HR would like to experience with each candidate. Here the transparency is the key. Both the party should be transparent. Instead of playing some trick HR should tell the budget (true budget) that should help both of them to save their time. It is indeed considered to be a big achievement if HR can close the position at 60 to 70% of the budget. That revitalises their own appraisal. Entire situation boils down to the point how desparate the company is to recruit a candidate with specific skill set. If having the knowledge of budget about the position is wrong then you are questioning govt. procedure of recruitment.

I already think is unfair if, say, the budget was 100k and the company is willing to pay that, but when seeing the previous wages of the candidate, proceeds to downgrade it by that much. I think you are assuming that all companies are altruistic and humane, that they will be reviewing your wage of 70k to nearer to 100k in the first year or even the second year. It usually does not happen and most employees are banned from divulging their wages to their fellow co-workers. Also, to make up, say, 30k is a lot. Most increments that I've seen over the years only range between 1-5%, and 5% is already when you do exceptionally well (at least where I am from). So because of this discrepancy from the start, it does not put me in good stead and also affects my next job/wage. This also causes pressure on candidates to push up/embellish their previous wages and/or have this notion of "you gotta keep job hopping in order to get a decent wage" at the end, and actually that's what nobody wants. Everybody wants a good place to work for an extended period and companies also do not want to have high turnover as it is costly. This is a tricky situation/reality that has been around for ages. Further, from my experience, many many companies do dampen the wages/asking as much as possible and sometimes get some candidates who aren't that great but are able to show they had higher wages before (even through job hopping) or are more aggressive in their demands get the jobs. It is just soul-sapping. Thanks for the video though. Great insight n tips.

Typically, in my own experiences of negotiating salary, when the decision maker asks me, for example, in real words "what kind of salary are you looking at?"' When the question is asked near the end of the interview, then, first, I reiterate previous aspects of the interview, job discussion and application process. In actual reply to this question, I have actually replied, "Based on the pace of my previous and current salary and your advertised pay range (in the job ad) or (when speaking to your HR/Recruiter) and considering current pay factors in the market for this space, I would like to get started with your team round about ($ABC123K), all things considered". However, that said, based on the level of confidence generated in details of the job discussion, your own range - from acceptable starting salary standpoint - will likely be $3-5K below or above the targeted salary you wish to achieve. If the decision maker asks very early, before any ground about the role has been covered, then its purely a screening filter inquiry and it is usually the least comfortable time to discuss the topic, because it has a certain cheapy, bargain hunter, superficial feel to it. In this case, if the potential employer takes this early route, simply say: "within your advertised salary range, some number north of ($123XYZk), depending on our discussion of the opportunity". *Never give the slightest impression that you are faint or withering in your determination to find the most appealing/suitable opportunity for a fair/reasonable/going market rate - for what you will bring to the table in terms of contribution and expertise. I would say this is especially the case with any potential employer who screens salary very early during an actual interview. If the decision maker asks at the end of a rich, thorough, thoughtful and positive interview process of 1 hour or more, then they most likely want to hire you. You will know it because the feeling will be as if all the stars aligned, and it seemed like even your mindset was congruent and flowing along the same rail with your interviewer. In most cases, whatever HR says in an interview will be very procedural, lack depth of discussing the actual -tactical- job function itself, and will be more of an advertisement campaign to give proper face to the company who is interviewing. (unless you are actually interviewing for an HR job). Your best interview should be with the potential boss and his/her subs (the person you will report to, and the people you will work with). Of course the path and approach always depends on behavioral cues, body and actual language, and tilt of the discussion in the real-time interview. *Just for qualifying my own insights and advice here: I have worked in Recruitment, Learning and Development and General HR Bus Partner/ Leader roles since 2005, for 3 of the largest oil, gas and engineering firms, domestically in the US and internationally, abroad. I summary, always give the reasons to pay you what you want based on valid, clear, logical reasons: Believing the employer accurately advertised a range they could afford - A) Your past and present salary falls within their advertised or declared range - within their budget, B) What you seek is fair, reasonable and existent in the market - for your skillset and expected contribution. C) Communicate the opportunity is well aligned between what you seek, what you can deliver, what they offer and what they want to achieve. Very importantly: After you state your number, dont say another word until they reply, maintain good eye contact, slight smile, humble. Not a word from you until they comment. Be cautiously optimistic if: Your real pay expectation is within the top quartile of their advertised pay range, and their real pay expectation is within the lowest quartile of their advertised pay range.

Hi Sonal. I happened to see your blob by accident and just sent your link to several folks I recently provided referrals to as part of their own job search. I wanted you to know that this type of content is very informative, I just got two remarks from the people I sent your link and both commented about your tone, and everyone commented about the way you use mnemonics!!! Thanks!

Thank You Miss! Btw, allow me to ask You what to do when your employer is eagerly asking for salary expectation, being too pushy that either you tell them or you're not considered! Once I told them and then they didn't call me back rejecting me saying that they believe that I'll flee away as I have a bulk of International exposure and trumendous amount of professional experience. I thought that they are British Firm and will offer me accordingly but they were way below to my country standards. Well, let.me repeat my Question, What to do when the prospective employer is too pushy to know the Salary Range? Thank You!

Great question Muhammad! Honestly, most companies know this question is rarely answered with figures. And a standard answer like ‘ salary would depend on the internal Equity and market standards’ works 96-98% of the time. If you stand your ground and they don’t consider you, think of it as a warning. Of their company culture. Think of it as a blessing. Would you really want to work in a company where: they put people in a corner while asking uncomfortable questions, and then reject them when they don’t like their answer? I wouldn’t ! This is my honest answer. I hope it helps. And thanks for watching and for your kind words, I so appreciate it!

As a fresher he can make a decent salary depending upon his carier growth and his knowledge . he can hike his salary after 1 year or change to other company . this is the order every employee sees as his growth. simply saying to negotiate his salary is ridiculous.

First off, salary expectation is asked by the HR typically in India, just unlike the UK, US, Aus etc.. Doesn't really make sense to ask this silly question to the candidates. Anyway every individual orgs have their own set of budget for each small things/projects. Not sure if you would agree with me or not but we have to accept the facts. Stay blessed!!
