Superchunk - (The Cure) In Between Days

Superchunk's last album, Here's To Shutting Up, came out in 2001. (For those keeping score, that's a long-ass time ago.) The legendary Chapel Hill band has played a few gigs in the last decade, but mostly kept quiet, so when a Chicago show was announced, we made a collective little "squee" noise. And since we're obviously big fans ("Detroit Has A Skyline" is on the master Undercover list!), we finagled and asked nicely and begged the quartet to drop by and record a song for us. Superchunk chose "In Between Days" by The Cure, and made it--as you'll see--their own. Oh, and in case you hadn't heard: There's a new Superchunk album just around the corner, called Majesty Shredding. It comes out September 14 on Merge, and it's a rocker in that old-school Superchunk way. Get excited.

In Between Days sounds very much like a New Order song and I do believe at the time The Cure came out with this that NME declared New Order should march to the patent office about it but then again imitation is the very sincere form of flattery. I'm in my 50s and I do so love this song!!

Funny story, way back in the mid-nineties my band opened for Sixpence None The Richer when they were a bit more indie rock. Leigh saw that I was playing a Fender guitar that she had never heard of (a Musicmaster), and jokingly told me that if I had been playing a Gibson Marauder, she'd have married me.

Awesome song and awesome cover especially the vocals. But the keyboards from the original Cure song give the song that mid 1980’s new wave punk feel and effect so it’s not the same without the cool sounding keyboards.
