Friends don't instantly hold other friends. Yes they comfort, and will hug them when they are crying, but not hold them the way Kara does to Lena. Kara's first reaction to Lena in pain has always been to wrap her arms around her, this is usually a sign of protection and safety that a more masculine partner sends the more feminine one. They doesn't necessarily mean male and female. Kara was the more masculine one between her and Lena, not just because of her powers, but her overall outlook on life in general. She's a protector, a logical thinker, more willing to place herself in harms way instead of letting others do it. Lena is the more feminine of the 2, more emotionally vulnerable, more capable of expressing her thoughts and far more willing to stake her claim to what she perceived as hers. So the fact that Kara's first instinct was to wrap her arms around Lena and Lena's first instinct was to let Kara protect her, says this is not a friendship
