Hi! This is the start of a tutorial series where we will be creating a stylized character sculpt from start to finish.
Part 1: Blocking out - The blockout phase of this particular workflow is very important. It's at this step of the process that we get our proportions and shapes as close as we can to save time later on.
I created a reference sheet from a previous sculpt that you can download at : sta.sh/02489cftt5td
Hope you enjoy this slower, more chill sort of sculpting vid!
Ahead in the coming weeks we'll cover:

if anybody's experiencing weird mirroring problems at 12:38 with the legs not aligning to the reference, you can fix this by applying all transforms by clicking on "Object" at the top in Object mode window, clicking "apply" then clicking "all transforms" after. then you can add the mirror modifier without giving our elfish woman detached legs!
@BranSculpts
@BranSculpts Жыл бұрын
This will happen if you move the mesh in object mode. Moving in object mode also moves the object's origin point which is what the mirror modifier uses as its center point. You can fix this by applying the transform, as you said, by placing the origin manually, or you can pick and object to use as mirror reference within the modifier with the eyedropper.

I'm a student studying 3D art and had been told not to try going into character modelling and to focus on environment art because it was just too complicated and there was too much competition. When I showed the same teacher my second model after following this tutorial series, he looked shocked, told me I should try to pursue character modelling for my final portfolio project, and took a picture of the tutorial on his phone so he could watch it and share it with other students later. That's how good this tutorial is

Actually that depends on how much effort you put into, if you’re really interested. Will overcome that, let say why teachers wouldn’t recommend it. Is there are not many students can make industry standards characters before graduation. Easy to learn and hard to master, modelling, re typology, bone, strength, flex 3d body, texturing. Everything above really matters. Within limited time, of course they wouldn’t recommend it. Even you can do it, you still need to complete with others. Since modelling entire character, can already be different lessons. And if the animation doesn’t look good, then it can’t show how good your characters. That’s why they won’t recommend it, all those added up. Nearly every 3d model skill has to learn. If you’re in general college that’s teaching about game development, 3 months there’s not enough time for them to teach. Maybe your teachers not good at character too. You need to learn in leisure time, get some feedbacks from your teachers.

The issue I have with a lot of tutorials here on youtube is that they do not repeat their process and hotkeys as they work. I don't blame them, it's second nature for them to know what to press and a lot of it seems like common sense to an experienced modeler. However for people who are new, not knowing even one of the hotkeys can send them in a spiral of trying to find it online or figure it out on their own and this can take up a lot of our time. I LOVE this tutorial because you repeat everything you do and you explain the basics instead of assuming we know everything! Thank you so much for the help. :)

I think i cracked why this video is so liked. This dude just took sculpting and engineered the hell out of it. First video ive seen where dude starts shaping and not seemlessly making a face shape out of sculpting mode. No artistic decisions. Place cube, extrude, shape, keep going. This is gold.

I haven't tried it yet, but I have the same sense that this is something I can do. I have little to no artistic ability, but this looks very doable. However, I've been in this mindset while watching other videos, and I've ended up with Sponge bob rather than Zelda. Regardless, I was captivated while watching this, and think this has been one of the most worthwhile half hours in a long time. I thought I had hit the jackpot with the Skin modifier for character modeling, but I'm starting to reconsider that opinion. Now onto the sculpting video.

Using Blender 3.41 If anyone is experiencing the issue where you turn off "Optimal Display" and you still can't see the mesh you need to go to Edit- Preferences-Viewport-Subdivision and make sure GPU subdivision is checked. Take your time and don't be too hard on yourself. Blender is a lot to take in and a long process to learn. Give yourself time and be patient when learning new things. You'll get to where you want to be creatively if you allow yourself to learn it slowly. Your first models won't always come out looking the best, but you will be able to learn from them and you'll learn the steps you need to fix it next time.

I’m taking a course and by no means is my teacher particularly bad but I already had a preference towards 2D art and my teacher only made 3D look so much more impossible for me. Absolutely phenomenal! I'm trying to create character models for my friends and have had trouble even starting the sculpt. I'm barely on the first video in this series and can already tell how much of this is not only extremely helpful and intuitive, but translatable into other projects! I thank you for these amazing tutorials, hopefully one day I can create something as helpful as this

I took "game design" classes in college and they taught me some basic 3d modeling (hard surface) stuff in maya, but it doesn't compare to how comprehensive and helpful this tutorial is. There's other modeling tutorials out there but this one is so nice for literally walking through Step 1 and beyond and you saying exactly what you're doing even if its the same thing over and over again (add cube, subdivide) it's just So Nice, compared to ones where it's like "okay start with your already blocked out form" or "we'll sculpt a whole face from just a circle" despite not having any sculpting skills. Thank you so much for posting this and can't wait to try part 2

You can also move the cubes in object mode and add an "empty" object and name it "world origin" and then when applying any mirror modifiers use it as the object to mirror from. Thus letting you use Local orientation when modeling which can be rather useful while still having mirrored objects. You can also very easily add any additional modifiers to the new cubes by quickly holding shift and clicking any object that has the modifiers you want to use in scene mode then pressing CTRL+L (for link) and copy modifiers. makes the whole process far less tedious.
