Superdrag - 1996 Portland, OR

Omg this is my tape! It’s Portland Maine, not Oregon, and the club was Zootz on April 30, 1996. I was into tape trading and did audio taping. I convinced my husband at the time to video tape the show. We taped from the stairs that went up to the balcony. The camera was one of those huge ones you had to rest on your shoulder as you looked through the viewfinder. Around 21minutes in you can hear us talking about the battery time. It had a habit of suddenly draining, and the 20 minutes you thought you had could be gone in five. There are a couple quick cuts in this copy of the video but I can’t remember if they are in the original. This show was before Sucked Out got radio play and before the video came out. It was a weekday and maybe 15-25 people were there including the other band. It was a fantastic show. They opened for Nancy Boy, who we also taped.

If they had released the same album and played the same shows in 2000-2001, they would have been as big as The Strokes. The only thing that band was guilty of was being four years too early. You go through any of those 1996 shows and that band was as tight as tight could be. One of my great musical regrets of the 90's is getting free tickets to go see them and not going to that show.

It's criminal that this set was performed in front of what sounds like about 20 people. They sound incredible here. One of the best live bands I've ever seen.

Wow. They are so young here. I first saw them play about a year before this in a tiny club in Tampa , Florida. They were opening for Five Eight. I remember being floored and have been hooked ever since. I've had the opportunity to see them quite a few more times in the years since, in all their incarnations but unfortunately , I missed their final hurrah with the original line up. Still kinda depressed about that but I still got to see one of the best damned power pop bands that ever walked the earth. That and I saw Tom Pappas steal a big gulp from a convenience store prior to going onstage. The clerk was nonplussed.
