Joe, I only found your excellent videos a few days ago. I have watched quite a few of them. I am so impressed and grateful that In each one you explain the mechanics of the game in such a clear way that the viewer gets a great idea of the components of the game and how it is played. It really helps in trying to decide if I should buy the game. Thanks so much.

I find this to be another superb example of Stuka Joe's thorough demonstration of a wargame (it's a wargame in my book!). This made me understand the sequence of play thoroughly and convinces me to seek out and purchase Churchill. Thanks for your efforts Joe!
@StukaJoe8 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I see it as a wargame, too, from the top view of the alliance perspective.
@AzraelSilent8 жыл бұрын
Exactly. I'm actually a bit on the greenhorn side of the wargaming spectrum of boardgames so I don't have a ton of experience to draw from. That being said, I enjoyed the strategic perspective and mechanics implementing that perspective. Are there any other games that could sit beside Churchill in this regard? I wouldn't think so but I don't have the experience to say correctly. When I think of strategic operational level wargames, I usually think of 1000+ counters acting on an operational level's agenda. Not, as in Churchill, in which so much has been abstracted.
@StukaJoe8 жыл бұрын
I'm no expert on strategic WW2 games, but they seem to have some things in common. The rulebooks tend to be long (50+ pages) and they have lots of counters (over 600). Thus, none compare with the simplicity of Churchill. It's a matter of finding the right strategic game for oneself. Some people don't mind much abstraction; others want control of every facet of the war. I used to play the old Avalon Hill Third Reich, until they added a ton of rules and pages to the rulebook, which is now over 120 pages long. Unconditional Surrender seems to be the standard these days for it is highly innovative. It seems that everyone that has played it, falls in love with the game. I would like to see what people say about Supreme Commander (GMT). Churchill is more of a diplomatic game set during the war. Thus, the military aspects have been highly abstracted in order to have players concentrate in more detail with the conferences, which is the game's showcase mechanic.
@AzraelSilent8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for suggestions! I will certainly take a look at Unconditional Surrender. If I had a teacher, I'd be intrigued to try something on that micromanagement scale such as Third Reich or Supreme Commander. Learning the games is usually my job so I'll have to walk before I can run.

This video is making my head hurt a bit. But I don't play many complex board games or many board games at all for that matter. That said, I am full of admiration for the time and effort that went into this video and the production values with the animations etc is far beyond the call of duty.

Stuka Joe My pleasure. Does the game indicate on the box or in the rules how long a game takes once everyone is familiar with it?
@StukaJoe9 жыл бұрын
+Bod Notbod   It doesn't.  The full game can be long (about 4 hours).

It depends on the scenario you select. The shortest one can be played in two hours, the longer one, in about 5.

(I'm trying to answer this one off the top of my head.) I believe that once production markers are converted into support markers, they go back to the pool.

@StukaJoe9 жыл бұрын
+Mark mccoy I played the Extended Example of Play, of course, about three times to help me understand the game. I played with two of my brothers this weekend (although we only had time to play through two full conferences) and we had a blast. I definitely recommend this game.
@professorhuggins54189 жыл бұрын
+Stuka Joe seems like a long game. does it to you as well?

The Campaign game (10 conferences) is long. The Tournament game is 5 conferences and I think it can be played in 2 1/2 to 4 hours.

Excellent video, thanks! Do you know if the victory conditions changed between printings (not even editions)? In my 2nd printing version, there are no dice involved in determining whether someone ran away with the game, it's a fixed value of 20. Also the penalties are fixed at 5 and 3 points respectively for the axis not surrendering.

In your example of play you place six german units and other japanese units in the home spaces during setup. I have the rules open and I dont see where it says to place them? Can you enlighten me? Thanks for your amazing work!
@StukaJoe7 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Dave. I don’t have the game accessible to me. I did this video more than 2 years ago, so I don’t remember why I placed them there. Sorry.
@evildrganymede6 жыл бұрын
Not sure if anyone is still interested in an answer to this but it says where to place the Axis reserves in section 7.6 of the rules. The training scenario setup says that the Italian reserve and German navy are out of play so the Germans get the 6 army units shown in the video only. All the Japanese reserves should be placed since they aren't excluded in the scenario description. Great video, btw - it really made things much clearer for me after reading the rules!

Anybody playing through this game from start to finish, and moreover, knows what they are doing, must have a) more leisure time that me, b) more IQ than me and c) more application and determination than yours truly. To borrow a saying from sport: "Sport (or in this case, games) doesn't make the character of the individual--it reveals it".
