I know this was a gangster type movie, but Ron O’Neal should have gotten some awards for this movie, because he really played the role!

Ron O'neal was a classically trained, Shakespearean actor, who gave an outstanding, gritty portrayal of Youngblood Priest in "Super-Fly". The movie was ,technically, not a "Blaxploitation" movie, due to the realistic theme and portrayals, unlike later movies, where the lead characters were more like comic super-heroes sticking it to the man. "Super-Fly" and Ron O'neal were creating a buzz in Hollywood among fans and critics alike. However, sources report that actress, Cicely Tyson was very vocal and outspoken against the movie, criticizing what she felt was a negative portrayal of the black community. The message of the movie was undoubtedly lost and misconstrued. It is also believed that her attack against the movie, "Super-Fly" is in no small way related to the fact that her own movie, "Sounder" was released in theters duringbthe same time. As a result, "Super-Fly", which debuted strongly at the box office, began to lose momentum, due to negative press, criticizing the movie 's theme and character portrayals. As a result, a brilliant actor like Ron O'neal was subjected to type casting and relative obscurity for many years after the movie was released. It is also unfortunate that the Blaxploitation era, which oly lasted a few years, was abanfoned by many in the black community. Who knows how and where that film genre and early era of independent, black producers and film makers could have evolved and to what degree had there been support from the community as a whole. We were generating huge box office income and breaking free from Hollywood's typecasting by depcting, strong independent black characters, and Hollywood was taking notice. Check it Out!`Ciao!!!
