Kara is supposed to have an accent too, because she was raised speaking Kyrptonian until she was 14. Then she makes herself sound more American as Supergirl. It's supposed to be more than "ponytail & glasses" but apparently they think it's either too confusing or Melissa Benoist can't pull it off.
