This is why I stay alive for decades. "Choke" is actually the sound that accompanies somebody holding back tears and wails, not "choke" as in "choking". -Choking back the tears covers it though there are a million interpretations of *choke*. It's the sound that precedes "sob".

@dngillikin
@dngillikin 2 жыл бұрын
Superman interrupts himself with "uh" in the middle of a sentence for much the same reasons real people do - as a filler to buy time to choose the right word or phrases he wants to say to convey his thoughts. Or because he was taken by surprise and is trying to think on his feet in coming up with a response. Or because he's trying to dissemble or deceive and is trying to come up with a believable lie or cover story on the fly.

Remember that “Men in the 50s and 60s didn’t cry” so the “choke” was recognizing that they had emotions, but of course held them back. Note that in most of the panels, it’s a man “choking”, but women doing the sobbing. Supergirl “chokes” once or twice… maybe because she’s stronger than a normal woman? 😄

Making Mxyzptlk good-looking was done intentionally to make his "pursuit" of Supergirl charming. For example, with 50 shades of Grey's exploits with Anastasia is considered hot and romantic. However, if Christian Grey's character was cast to be played by Christopher Walken, it would be taken in a different tone & he would have been locked up quicker than R. Kelly.

I find it great that the CW-Myxy was watching early season Supergirl (which focused a lot around unhappy romance) and basically said "What this show needs is some conflict... so I create a love triangle". He was very genre-savy there. On an unrelated note, I really like Smallvilles interpretation of the Imp, which cast him in a darker (almost demon-like) light.

@@dalehoustman4737 Definitely some good artists , Yeah. Some of them went on into the Bronze Age . So I’m like Oh Yeah here’s the earlier work of a guy I know from doing Bronze Age Spider man ,Spider woman, etc. Yeah, there’s no denying a certain level of “goofiness”. If you can’t get over that it might not be for everyone. But if you can just sort of shrug that off there is still interesting stuff in there. To me the entire history of a character counts (so you can imagine I’m not thrilled with the attempts to end continuity and ret con everything). So while that may deter some of my interest in more recent eras, it encourages my interest in the older eras that while I was always somewhat aware of, I didn’t previously actually read the majority of until now. 😀✌️

And in the Silver Age, Supergirl's parents actually did "come back to life". It turns out they didn't die on Argo, but had gone into the "Survival Zone", which was akin to the Phantom Zone. I didn't learn this until long after the TV show ended, but the Batman TAS episodes "Perchance to Dream" and "A Bullet for Bullock" are direct adaptations of one-and-done issues of the comics. If I recall correctly, the latter is a bit more straightforward as an adaptation, whereas "Perchance to Dream" didn't have Mad Hatter, but a psionic meta-villain that I think was never seen after that issue. Both are good episodes from the series, and I think I kind of stumbled across the source comics while picking stuff up at conventions.

I do like the angle of Zor-El and Alura being willing to sacrifice their new lease on life for Kara's sake (which nicely mirrors the Danvers being willing to let Kara go for the same reason). This is complicated, though, by the fact that later stories established that her Kryptonian parents weren't dead at all, but managed to make it to the "Survival Zone" before Argo was destroyed (The Survival Zone is sort of like the Phantom Zone, but with fewer serial killers). So does that mean Mxy actually scooped them out of the Survival Zone and, I dunno, gave them amnesia to make them think they'd been dead? That's dark, even for Mxy. Or did he just conjure up a couple of fakes out of thin air, but he did such a good job duplicating them that the fake versions were just as noble and self-sacrificing as the real ones would've been? *Choke!* It's all so confusing...

I only discovered this story a couple weeks ago. It reminded me of the Alan Moore story, "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?" because that was an even more extreme Mxy over the top. Mxyzptlk is usually Good Fun Hijinks if you look at what He does as Impish & not think about How truly dangerous & damaging they potentially are , with the MAJOR Exception being WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO THE MAN OF TOMORROW…The Emotional scene between the two sets of Parents, & The Noble Sacrifice of Her Birth Parent’s does definitely take this one out of the realm of just clean fun “CHOKE! SOB!”…Silver Age ,& CW what more can we Hope for 🤷🏾‍♂️ …Thank U for continuing to initiate thoughts on multiple perspectives on the subject…Keep Up The Great Work Sasha 🖖🏾 …P.S Bookclub Vote ASAP Please 😎

You should check out the issues of Adventures of Superman by Greg Rucka and Matthew Clark where Mr Mxyzptlk appears. The CW series borrowed heavily from them. Specifically the parts 2 and 3 of Narrative Interuptus. Complete with Mxyzptlk wearing his version of Superman’s outfit with his version of the M shield. I may be bias as I drew the issues and noticed the parallels

When it comes to episode adaptations of comic stories, nothing beats the iconic "For The Man Who Has Everything." But it's interesting how storylines and elements from other media go back into the main universes. Best example of that I can think of is... Gordon being there the night Bruce's parents were murdered?

Whenever it says *choke* in this comic, all I think of is the gurgling of that Imperial officer being force-choked by Lord Vader...

I came here to hear you try and do the Mxy voice of Gilbert Gottfried from the Superman the Animated Series. I have never felt such betrayal and disappointment.

I'd say a good way to help with the pronunciation for Mixy is the "Superman the Animated Series" episode where he first shows up, he does it real slow with visual examples to help. I don't remember if that's always been the intentional pronunciation, but it's one of the few mediums with voice acting that's attempted it, and it's Gilbert Gottfried so you know it's good. -Looks around- Oh, someone actually made a video of all his appearances, well minus his episode of "My Adventures with Superman."

My hot take on Mxy is that he pronounces him name in different ways on purpose to throw off people who need him to say his name backwards. To Superman, he says: "Mix-yaz-pitti-lick" To Lois: "Mix-ill-plick" To Kara: "Meek-slip-tik" To Jimmy: "Mix-ull-pill-i-tick" I could go on...

I definitely like the conflict of this story of family and ways to show how you love them and our assumptions about what is the 'correct' way to navigate it. But I doubt the original story could have played with Supergirl having an atypical family structure to resolve the tension, like the two families living under the same roof and forming a new family unit.
