You made a lot of references to what it must have been like in 1978 and I’ll sum it up: at the end the entire audience stood up and cheered each name as the closing credits rolled. To this day, even with its faults Superman the Movie remains a brilliant film. It is also the only movie theme I know each note from beginning to end. So glad you enjoyed it.

I’ve always read the sudden ability to go back in time as the first time Superman had ever pushed his limits. He had no idea whether it would work, but he was so distraught over failing to save Lois that he was willing to go farther than he’d ever gone to try and save her.

I always sorta head cannoned it as he flew faster than light, and if time slows as you approach light speed, exceeding it reverses time. Idunno for shit if that actually checks out with Einstein, but it works in my brainbits. Interesting point imo, light can travel around the earth about 8ish times per second, and if you count his laps, it’s not far off that.

People need to understand, that the reason Chris Reeve is the best Superman/Clark (by_FAR!) is NOT because he was the first big-screen version of him, and thus we have to show respect (cause that’s BS) It’s also not cause he’s sadly passed, and thus we have to show him respect that way. It’s NON of that. Reeve is the BEST because he’s the only fucking one whom truly distinguished his Clark and Superman! Those two persona’s are worlds apart, the way that Reeve brilliantly plays them two. Cavill might have the muscles, but he is so far from the class-actor that Reeve was. Reeve’s Clark is so charming and geeky, in the best possible ways. From the way he talks, walks, combined with that slightly more “hunched” over way of standing; he’s just amazing. When he’s Superman he straightens his back, his voice gets deeper and his entire demeanor changes. He’s absolutely MAJESTIC in the role. Even in Superman 4, which is atrocious, Reeve is still incredible in it. Hands down, Reeve is the definitive Superman.
@flatebo1
@flatebo1 Жыл бұрын
The 1940s Max Fleischer Superman cartoons/Superman radio serials pioneered the transition from Clark to Superman. "This looks like a job for Superman" with an octave drop in the middle of the sentence. Reeve adapted that by adding a full posture change to distinguish the Clark/Superman duality.

Oh Coy, Reeves set the standard for all other Supermen in media. As a child, I lived less than a mile for our $1 theater, when those were still a thing. I walked to the theater every day, I was seven, to watch this movie for a straight month. It helped shaped my childhood and the kind of person I eventually grew up to be. His conflict, between what his two fathers taught him, often tear me up a bit. And remember, he didn't just save Lois. He stopped that second rocket entirely. Nobody even remembers all that happened in California except Superman and the audience.

She was surprised when we did not ask for an autograph but we told her that she was a delight and the conversation was more important to have. I saw this in the theater in 1978. It was unlike anything I had ever seen before with the exception of Star Wars. It definitely wasn’t Adam West’s 1960’s Batman or Lynda Carter’s Wonder Woman. When he saved Lois from the helicopter 🚁 crash the hair stood up on the back of my neck. It was one of the best movies of the 70’s and a special memory from my boyhood. I can't imagine seeing this after watching modern superhero films. As someone who watched it as a child, I think it definitely plays differently without modern effects and Conventions to compare it too. I never questioned the mid air costume change, and simply assumed it was done ar superspeed. I I never questioned his inability to save Lois, assuming he was saving Jimmy or someone else at thr same time. I was confused by the time travel. Like many, I thought he had reversed time. The rest of the films are where the powers get weird. Lex came across as campy and too comedic (even to a child), but still felt sinister. Unfortunately, the films never get the villains quite right. Overall, I do prefer this Superman over others. He feels much more in line with the core aspects and themes of the character, in my opinion.

Brando and Hackman got paid more than Chris Reeve for this movie too! Many big name stars wanted the role of Superman, but Richard Donner decided that audiences see "Dustin Hoffman playing Superman" or "James Caan playing Superman." By casting an unknown actor, Donner was able to just give us Superman. Others who wanted the role included Neil Diamond, Arnold Schwarzenegger, James Brolin, Lyle Waggoner, Christopher Walken, Nick Nolte, Jon Voight, and Perry King. Lyle Waggoner was the good-looking straight man on the Carol Burnet Show, and went on to play Colonel Steve Trevor in the Wonder Woman TV show. Walken finally got into a superhero movie as Max Shreck in Batman Returns. 😀

I was in high school at the time, and if you think today is cynical, you have to remember in the 70’s we’d just had a President resign in disgrace, we’d just left Vietnam, and ten years before we had major assassinations abruptly changing history. So, it showed up THEN as a challenge to cynicism - as did Star Wars a year and a half earlier. And it really really really worked. I showed it to my niece about three years ago, and she said, “This is nothing like I expected, but I’m falling for it hard.” Of course it would work now. It just did… with you.

i remember seeing this in the early 80's or it might of been in the late 70's at a drive-in movie theater when movies were great like this one...with my still great friend. it was great seeing it at a drive=in cause you never know when or if he is going to come off the screen to save the day... and it's a great movie...All i have to say about him reversing the time like he did was because of his anger and anger has a well it plays a much larger part. you know when he was younger and his earthly father died and he was unable to save him through his heart-attack.

Gene Hackman refused to shave his head to play Lex. So it was written into the script that Lex wears wigs to hide his baldness, and they had Hackman wear a bald cap with a wig on top for that last scene. The green crystal that Jor-El sends with Kal-El isn't kryptonite, and I think it was a mistake to make it green because many people (like Coy) could easily mistake it with kryptonite. They could've just made the crystal a different color to avoid the confusion, but didn't for some reason.

I was nine when this came out. Killing Lois freaked me out so much I had to skip it when the scene ran on tv eventually. Wonderful film. Just beautiful. I always read Supes changing in midair as a wipe- so fast you can't see it since he does the quick change in the rotating door as well.

It’s about time you saw it!!! Sheesh! I was eight years old when “Superman The Movie” came out. I’d seen “Star Wars” a year earlier. It was an amazing time. This film is really what started it all, as far as big budget superhero films. Man, it’s so epic. Christopher Reeve is perfect as Superman and Clark Kent. No one has topped his performance, imho.

Great reaction! I really like both versions of Superman II, but I think you should watch the theatrical cut since it's the "official" version and (in my opinion) has the best performances. The Donnor cut is great but it's incomplete and mixes a lot of different "cuts" together that don't always cohere. I'd recommend watching it after the Lester theatrical cut. You should definitely watch Superman III. I think Christopher Reeve looks the best in that film and Annette O'Toole as Lana Lang is really good. You can skip 4...it's about tied with Batman and Robin.

When he mentioned the he wasn’t fast enough to fly through the mountain but fast enough to make time reverse sort of got to me. My theory is Louis’ death brought out the rage to trigger that speed and even disobey his father’s rules. They should make a “What If” he didn’t save her lol.

Before that we only had "special effects" from Superman from the 50s, Adam West's Batman and Wonder Woman from 1975. When this film came to cinemas, it was a sight for sore eyes.

I think this movie captures exactly how a Superman should be. The biggest power of Superman is his ability to inspire other to be the best they can be, to be optimistic despite how the world is around. I think that's the quality that's lacking in his recent movies (no shade on Cavill, I think he was perfectly cast) and Superman i literally, a beacon of hope, not grittiness. There's an animated movie called Superman vs The Elite that captures exactly that, they should use that as a blueprint, because if Marvel could adapt Captain America into the movies by keeping the character to its core values, Superman would be something amazing to see at the cinema.

No knock on the modern Superman, it represents our current state of despair and cynicism, but Reeves Superman is a perfect representation of a hero that’s supposed to inspire hope. And the John Williams score is a chefs kiss. I grew up on these old movies. It has a special place in my heart. My dad took me to everyone and we had a blast. I hope you guys enjoy it too. ❤

I think this is both true and untrue. Remember, the 1970s in the USA was a period of deep intense cynicism. By 1978, Watergate and Vietnam left a deeply divided, distrustful and suspicious nation. This is alluded to when Lois says 'you're going to end up fighting every elected official in this country'. What Donner grasped and the recent iterations don't is that there is no point making a Superman movie without hope. Superman can be a solution to cynicism but the character doesn't work as a cynic himself.

Yeah, it's kind of weird that he could fly circles around the Earth so fast to reverse time...and not be able to catch both rockets or get to Lois in time to save her in her car....However, I think that added rage grief of having her die gave him the extra speed and uncovered his turning the world backwards powers. That's how I made peace with that scene.

This was a SUPER special reaction. The fact that you are such a Superman aficionado makes this reaction one of the very best. I learned a lot! I saw this in the theatre when it came out, and it was great. Regarding Hackman: you have to understand what we were expecting. The Batman series from '66. (Which I still love). And we were shocked to get an origin story! Never in a million years did we think that every few years they'd reboot every superhero and retell their origin stories. Every time I see origin story, I think of Superman '78. Anyways, Hackman and Brando were the first cast and the idea that these two heavyweight actors were going to do Superman was almost shocking. They're the ones that got this movie made, the star power of those two actors. And sure enough, every superhero movie since has stunt casting of the villains and minor characters, another legacy of this movie.

Actually, I believe the scene when he leaps out the window & suddenly his super suit appears, I believe like in the comics, he’s using his super speed so he is moving so fast you can not see him change into his super suit, so he is using a super power in that scene.

This was one of the first films I ever saw at the cinema as a kid, shortly after Star Wars. To me at the time it was on the same level. A tent pole cinematic experience. I'd love to know which 25 (?!!!) comic book movies you put above it (especially considering they all come in its wake)...

Something did stop SuperMan from getting to Lois. It was his promise to lexes GF to help her mother 1st. The promise scene was meant for that reason. To me, it showed how honest he was even though his love interest was in distress. He made a promise he kept it and lost his girl for it. Until the scream I'll always remember!

I watched the expanded cut last night (having seen the theatrical cut or possibly a TV cut when I was a kid). Two things that hit me as probably making sense to the screenwriter but not being conveyed very clearly visually: 1: Superman changing clothes mid-air. It was probably meant to be quickly taking off his suit and tucking it away, leaving the Superman outfit underneath, but it was done as a dissolve. 2. Superman going back in time. It was probably meant to be breaking the light barrier and then slowing down, but comes off as changing the turn of the Earth like a record and then changing it back, confusing generations of audiences.
