Supermarket Strawberry Test - winners and losers

Not all strawberries have the X Factor - some just don't make the grade - in this film we learn a bit more about what the British consumer wants and therefore what supermarket asks their growers to deliver. But it's tough as there are so many factors that influence the strawberry plant and what happens to it after it is picked. Agronomist Devon Swart gives us a tour of Mansfield's strawberry fields and packing unit. The grower, based near Canterbury in Kent, supplies the UK supermarkets with cherries, apples and pears as well as thousands of tonnes of strawberries every year.

This thing of the consumer desires a certain shape and size is BS quite frankly. It's the shops that decide that. I love shopping in the EU, especially in countries like Poland where it's all shapes and sizes and generally all bigger than what you get here.

The bigger strawberries usually have very little taste and should just be used in processed products. Many of these mass produced verieties are not grown for taste but for size and speed of growing. I hate what the supermarkets have done to the food market making farmers grow animals, fruit and veg to exact sizes for ease of packaging

Not sure what you need to put on a strawberry to make it the same size as your hand, but pretty sure it's not natural. I don't want any part of that
