Damn, John got a lot more hate than he actually deserved because people thought he was a cold, heartless father, but in reality, he was actually one of the most loving fathers out there who only wanted to protect his sons from demons, despite his grief for his wife. If you actually have a heart lol, you can hear the heart break in him when he talks to Sam about his gf. I really hope John comes back for another episode or too, not the Negan version though lol, JDM is def an awesome actor.

Jacob Lamarre Omg I couldn't agree more. Yes he wasn't the greatest father out there, hell he may have sucked at it but he loved his boys. He literally died for them. I don't know much parents who would die for their kids and go to hell. Well he may have been verbally abusive and sometimes made very, very bad choices -such as raising his kids as hunters-, but it wasn't like he was a monster to them. He was a man of authority and that may have caused some verbal abuse, every kid goes through that phase. You can't except parents to be always calculating. I don't think that he was abusive in a way that people put it, I feel like the fandom is reading wayyy too much into scenes like this. Someone calling his father yes sir doesn't indicate that the child was abused or something, it just means that the father has a great authority on them and when you think about John and Dean's relationship, that makes sense. Jeez, people talk about it in such way that you think he verbally abused them like he called them "you piece of shit" etc. Like I said, he wasn't the best father but he still loved his kids and doesn't deserve the hate he gets.

people make it worse just because Dean says yes sir. This literally happens in many TV shows and it’s normal. this does not mean that he is his soldier or something else, this is a simple respect for what they were taught from childhood. They simply respect their father very, very much and love him no matter what. John is not the worst father. He raised these boys alone. He was shattered by grief and was looking for the strength to live on. Get it already!!!! It is not known what Sam and Dean would have done in his place, perhaps they would have been much tougher. Compare them from season 1 to season 15, they have changed a lot, so a life like John’s would change them for sure

Something I just realized is that sam always rebelled his dad which related to Lucifer rebelling against god and dean was always the good son and followed his dad's orders like michael was with god. This was why they were the vessels to their respective archangles.

"Then finally this one guy with like a safety pin in his nose and a 'kill everything' tattoo looks up and he says 'sorry sir.' Yeah, 'sorry sir' heh. To John frickin' Winchester."
