I definitely feel like Dean dying was the right decision narratively. Without even getting into spoiler territory, I feel like any last-minute solution would have felt cheap or unsatisfying, but at the same time you're not really expecting for one of the main characters to die and go to hell so it's still not exactly expected. Also I just gotta say, I've been looking forward to the next episode for months ;)

exactly! on that time when next season was not still out, we all thought they wouldn't kill sam or dean...we used tot think he will somehow escape from death. but then he died! it was a big shock for me and i loved this decision. (i cried my heart out tho XD)

They actually changed it to what we got because of a writers strike. The original ending I believe had Sam giving in fully to his abilities and becoming full on evil for Season 4 (he leads the charge to release the devil) and Season 5 is against Sam/Luci himself (possessed by the devil. Freed at the very end) as the villain (this is why S14 has Dean/Michael as the villain for a while. It was supposed to mirror this). S6 onward played out exactly the same as it was intended

The "dead or alive" scene always makes me cry. Dean's trying his hardest to put on a brave face and give Sam one last happy memory of them together. But the facade slips and you can see how utterly terrified Dean is. So excited for season 4! 4 and 5 are my favourite seasons.

I think you're right that Dean was trying to mentally prepare himself in those last moments before the hellhounds came. But I LOVE that he was also trying to mentally prepare Sam. Sam says to him, "What am I supposed to do?" (11:11) which echoes what Dean says to Sam in 2x22 when Sam dead on the bed. Dean says, "What am I supposed to do?" 3 times, and then ends up making the deal. So, here Dean is trying to give Sam an actual lifeline, trying to actually answer that question. "Keep fighting. Look after my wheels. Sammy, remember what Dad taught you and remember what I taught you." It's such a beautiful moment and is a perfect example of Dean putting Sam first and taking care of him to the very end. Great reaction! 😊

It was Ruby until she and Sam split up (when Sam was about to kill the little girl) she went into another bedroom, that’s when I assumed Lilith took her vessel. Remember Dean saw Ruby’s true face by the fence, that’s how he knew it wasn’t Ruby at the end. The line Bobby utters “Family don’t end with blood, boy” has become the theme that fandom has adopted. It’s why I’m still so invested - well besides my love for the characters and the actors. FUN FACT: there is an AWESOME video of Jensen singing ‘Wanted’ along with Corey Taylor of Slip Knot. A small thing I love is after Dean gives his little speech to Sam about what to do after he died basically mentally preparing himself while also trying to prepare Sam. It seems like Dean has come to terms with what’s gonna happen and for a moment Sam has but as soon as Dean sees that hell hound and it comes at them, they all immediately run and try to blockade into a room. It’s like they knew it was coming and nothing could stop it but those natural fighting instincts kicked in and they still tried to run and fight. Idk it’s so small but I’ve always loved it

The character analysis as the story is told is what I appreciate from Sesskasays, that and the breakdown I also get from DakaraJayne. Both without getting all 'fan-girly' over the boys and being objective enough to dissect the plot, the arc and how the boys overcome what appears to be insurmountable odds and still keep going. How they relate to each other during those testing times, the secrets and the things left unsaid. I've found a new appreciation for the shows based on the reactions of these two women and I love it. When you read the comments sections the fandom it is almost quite toxic and negative and I wonder that they take it as if it were 'real' and not a work of fiction and good story telling, and I do wonder if we are watching the same show.

Everybody focuses or talks about Dean holding back and are so happy when he shares - How is it that no one realizes that of the two brothers - Sam is the one who really does not share? He bottles up everything, and if he does let out a feeling its usually in anger. After 3 seasons here, have we really heard him talk about what he feels about Jessica's death. Yeah, we got the guilt and we got the sleeplessness and we got the nightmares - but nothing about his grief or his loss, things like that. I love Sam. I love Dean. And each of them most definitely have their own distinct personalities. But attributing the "silent" persona to Dean...? Yeah, no. Matter of fact, of the two brothers he is more emotionally demonstrative, while Sam keeps getting more and more silent - especially post "Mystery Spot". Just my 2c

@@Ladylike79 Actually - and I'm sorry to say this - but my comment was that he gets more credit while Sam goes a lot unnoticed, which was the point I was trying to make. Maybe I was unclear... What I was tying to say is that Sam has been through a lot of heavy sh*t, starting with episode one: -- the knowledge that as a 6-month old baby he was somehow involved with his mother's death; -- the inhuman death of his hope-to-be-fiancée; -- the pre-cog nightmares about Jess' death; -- the follow-up to that with the demon induced powers; -- the information that his father told his big brother that he might have to kill Sam; -- the constant repetition that he's supposed to be Hell's Boy King; -- the forced survival fight where he's supposed to kill his friends; -- his own death and the subsequent and uncalled for guilt with regard to Dean's deal; -- the knowledge that he will soon be without his brother, after already getting a taste of it ...yeah, I can go on. Where at all does he really have a heartfelt convo with anyone? I'd say more, but then I'd get into spoiler territory. And yes, Dean has his own share of sh*t. But he talks. To Sam, to Bobby, and others. Which is my point All this is _not_ to say that I love one more than the other. Each one is the other's support system. This is the core of Supernatural after all. And truly, in certain seasons the bond between the two brothers is the ONLY thing that kept me going - talk about illogical and glaring plot-holes, yikes! Just my 2c.

@@denny7119 I see your point. IMO fandom overwhelmingly accuses Dean of being closed off while calling Sam the sensitive one that actually opens up and is in touch with his feelings. I've always seen it the opposite way which is why I feel that fandom is pretty harsh to Dean in this regard. I also feel that both brothers have suffered differently but one hasn't had it worse than the other and I don't get the way that fans are always trying to one up their trauma. But that's a totally different discussion!

Great reaction as always. I'm so excited that we are starting season 4. I, personally think that of all 15 seasons it is the best season of the show. While other seasons have some excellent episodes, I believe that season 4 (and 5) came together collectively to tell the best overall arc for these characters.

I can agree. I mean the first three really set the tone and give us the ability to grow attached and get to know the spn world. But 4 and 5 are thee best. I mean 6-10 are mehhh with great single episodes and new characters. 11 forgetable. 12-15 i got geared back up. But when I think of the boys i think of season 4-6 mostly. However first season has BEST scary episodes. Just good old monster hunting.

I promise you when I first saw this I was in pure SHOCK. I truly believed they would save him because they always found a way. It blew my mind when he went to hell, but I must say that's when I said it to myself. This is the best show ever! The gall, the moxy to kill one of the main characters in a finale??????? You must be outta your mind. I know this was around the time of the strike but still. I was all for it because now you have to show me what your imagination is about. I LOVED IT even though Dean died, it set up great writing, in my opinion. We can't always save the star of the show and I'm all for it. The twists and turns of this episode were something else. Dean telling Sam that he is going to let him go to hell was rough! I couldn't imagine telling my brother that or vice versa.Dean being hell's bitch was definitely useful in identifying the demons. If only he had realized that wasn't Ruby earlier. Fucking Lilith and her damn white eyes. That whole time it was her and had most of us clueless. She is a PROBLEM! Turned Dean to puppy chow for real. It was definitely surprising seeing him actually torn up by the Hellhounds! "Wow, they're really showing it"? I'm sure you will be told about Season 4 over and over so I won't even bother to tell you how EPIC it is! See you there! Adios. By the way love the thoughts at the end of each episode. I tend to agree with a lot of your thoughts, not all but most of them.

I think Dean had a rougher demon deal than John did; as you said, the doom and gloom of knowing the time of your death must be so heavy to bear the closer you get to the actual date... It is like slowly pulling a band-aid instead of just ripping it off, as John did in his deal.

And I’m not sure the time expands at the same rate at every “ring” of Hell, according to what we see (in contrast to what we are told) in later seasons. But this is something every fan has to experience and decide for themselves. 😊

@@glygriffe Alastair was right when he said 100 years in hell. We only have what is said in the series and what he said is canon. He was the one torturing John just like he tortured Dean and had no reason to lie or compliment a Winchester without reason. Like Dean told Jo in Born Under A Bad Sign, demons tell the truth especially when they know it'll mess with someone's head and that's exactly what Alastair was doing at the time when he told Dean how he was the one who broke the first seal and the same when he compared Dean's 30 years before Alastair broke him to John's 100 years (which equates to 10 months on Earth which was about the time that lapsed between his death and when the devil's gate was opened) without having been broken. My best advice is to not compare the post-Kripke seasons to the first 5. They added a lot of stuff that was never intended in the series and retconned a ton so if anything is unreliable, it's that. I take the series as 2 works right now. There's the Kripke seasons which are their own work and there's the overall series which is its own thing where the story is fluid and has no reliable boundaries thanks to the retcons. So when the overall 15 seasons are being considered, you can't take actual canon from the Kripke years too seriously because you won't enjoy it, and that's my issue because I love the first 5 seasons and as a result anything that contradicts with that in a serious way I just can't enjoy when you consider the amazingly detailed tapestry that is the writing during the Kripke years where some of most amazing things that were implied create their own subplot. I did like season 6 a lot since I thought it felt like the natural continuation of what happpened in season 5 and its additions didn't contradict what Kripke laid out. He even returned to write that season's finale in one final contribution to the series and that was like a huge stamp/nod of approval from the creator. I thought the seasons after 6 had some interesting plots and some (much fewer than the first 6 seasons) characters I liked but the bad writing with so many contradictions just to create what was then present day drama without any regard for continuity is something I can't forgive when it is the spectacular writing that I along with so many other original fans I used to speak with in the forums back in 2005-2011 loved so much & respected about the series. Many of those people I knew from the Smallville forums as well since we used to post threads on the same site and we all agreed that Supernatural was much better written in season 1 compared to how Smallville's writing was in season 5 which is the season that aired when Supernatural's 1st season was on. And that trend continued even through season 6. Smallville's writing was amazing the first 3 seasons in comparison to the rest of the series but when I see what shows are on the CW network now and what Supernatural became, I appreciate even the not so great writing in that series because even though it felt short of its first 3 seasons, it was still way above average in many ways.

I think my biggest questions at this point - other than how/if Dean will get out of Hell - is WHY does Ruby want Lilith dead, how did she get out of the Devil's Trap, and why did the white power blast explode a concrete police station, but not this house? Did Lilith do something to Ruby in the past? Does she just want revenge on Sam's behalf?

This aired during the writer's strike and at the time there weren't plans to having it extend out to 5 seasons yet (there was no guarantee & I believe the strike actually kept the show going and gave Kripke the time to come up with the angels plot of the following season). In the original plan, Sam was supposed to go darkside and Dean was supposed to have remained in hell. I specifically remember the discussion about this in the forums back at the time.

I have watched all the seasons, and I can with great certainty say that Dean in hell is the most horrifying and chilling scene in the whole series. I still get goosebumps to this when Dean screams Sam's name
