Actually, they did tell Dean why it has to be him to stop the apocalypse. You must've forgotten, in episode 16, Alastair tells Dean he broke the first seal, then Castiel tells him something like "and it is written, that the righteous man who started it, must be the one to stop it." So yes, Dean has been told exactly why it has to be him.

i think your edits are just fine! i personally think the most important thing in the show is the relationship between the two brothers, and that's why i watch your reactions- because you love sam and dean, the absolute heart of the show. i try to be super careful about spoiling, because it's no fun at all. i love watching someone go in blind, that's the whole point of the reaction, and your post episode thoughts are such fun. i love theorizing and listening to people run through their thoughts, it's a lovely treat for me to have so much afterwards. pineapple! this episode is why it makes me mad when people say "you can just start at season 4" because i find that really, really disingenuous. at the beginning of season 4, sam is spiraling without dean, and you won't have the buildup of their bond over the past three seasons to understand just why he was so lost and dependent on ruby after he died- my man is grasping for any anchor right now. the guilt, the overwhelming desire for more power (so something like what happened to dean will never happen again), all his struggles will never make sense and the audience won't have sympathy for his actions and his mindset if they haven't seen the previous three seasons. sam was desperate to find a way to save his brother in season 3, and he failed, and now he's found an awful solution. like you said, sam just wants to do good, and this seems like the only plan around. his coping mechanisms are completely thrown out when it comes to dean, because dean is just that important to him. his relationship to faith is really interesting too- sam obviously believes and wants to think there's some good out there, and then he meets angels that all obviously despise him and have picked his faithless brother over him, and yet he's still trying. i really love sam, and he's in a very low place this season. watching him and dean fight is probably the hardest part of this season for me. i too want them on the same page, and i'm also so frustrated with everyone around them because these extenuating circumstances are yanking them further and further apart. also, starting at season 4 will never allow for the shock and awe of an actual angel showing up to actually mean anything, because they've gone three seasons without any evidence that there's any higher power or angels existing at all. we've only seen darkness and evil and monsters up until castiel shows up, and then it becomes clear over the season the angels are very aloof, and, as dean says, "they're dicks." that rise and fall of hope over the season is so interesting, at least how i went through it.

I can't believe some people actually suggest that. There is SO MUCH absolutely vital information and character introductions, character interactions, character growth, etc....Starting at season 4 is absolutely ridiculous. Besides, the first 3 seasons are fantastic! (Especially 2)

Christopher Heyerdahl is one of the greatest actors I’ve come across. I first ever saw him as “The Swede” in Hell on Wheels and I never knew he was in supernatural until a few months ago. He’s got a unique voice and uses it differently with every character he plays. He sounds nothing like any of his characters during interviews or in person.

it all comes down to the q: would you drink demon blood to save the world? in the time it took most folks to say Hell No, Sam would already be slicing a demon's wrist and drinking what came out. that defining characteristic of doing whatever it takes makes him extremely heroic yet also makes Sam his own worst enemy

I absolutely haaaate that Dean and Bobby left Sam alone in the panic room for his detox. You never leave an addict alone in a situation like that. They could die. I can't help but think that if they'd been there with him through the whole ordeal, things might have played out differently. I realize the plot demanded this course of events so that we get what we get in Season 5 but ... yeah.

Completely agree! The way they went about it was really bad. They should've been there with him, and they also shouldn't have had him just stop having Demon Blood. I'm pretty sure the safer way to do it would be to slowly give him less and less every day in order to make it a little easier on him. They literally could've done it so much better... To everyone who hasn't noticed, there's a reason Dean didn't want Sam to use his abilities and it goes back to season 2 and even season 1. Dean remembers the other psychic kids like Ava, Jake, Max Miller, Andy, Andy's brother, and several others and how many of them ended up becoming very evil, which is why other hunters like Gordon Walker were hunting them. The only thing keeping Sam from turning like the ones who ended up bad/evil like Ava, Andy's brother, and Jake; or just severely messed up in the head like Max Miller, was Dean. Dean even told Sam that he has something Max Miller didn't and it was him (Dean). None of those other psychic kids drank demon blood and their powers grew as seen in Ava, Jake, and Andy's brother. Like them, Sam too had the power to kill Lilith within him (without needing to drink any more additional blood) and become even stronger than just having visions of the future like he started with and Ruby even admits this in the very next episode when she says "You didn't need the feather to fly, you had it in you the whole time Dumbo" meaning he didn't need to drink any more demon blood since he already had Azazel's blood & the power they granted him inside him. The external demon blood he drank from Ruby and other demons served 2 purposes. First it was like steroids in a way where it allowed Sam to tap into his powers without giving into them the way the psychic kids who went full on evil tapped into their powers and fully embraced the power of the demon's blood that Azazel poured into their mouths as infants. Second it served as poison that Sam willingly drank thinking he needed it where the demons were able to control Sam and make him see what they wanted him to see so they could drive a wedge between him & Dean. The hallucinations Sam saw in Bobby's panic room were all caused by it and were purposely done to make Sam angry and prepare him for Dean calling him a monster which was the final straw for Sam. I initially thought the altered voicemail message Dean left him in Lucifer Rising was a result of the blood too but I think Sam had gotten out of detox by then so that was probably the angels since Zachariah did make a comment about prodding Sam in the right direction just before he listened to the altered voicemail message. Anyway, my point is that the consequences of the demon powers can be seen all throughout Season 2 so when Cas & even Uriel earlier on warned Sam, they had a point because going down that road was bad news. Dean didn't want him to do it either as seen in No Rest For The Wicked because he remembered how those other psychic kids ended up and knew that he was the one keeping Sam human and once he was dead & in hell, Sam wouldn't have him anymore and needed to stay away from using his powers. This is why I love the Kripke seasons so much, because the smallest details come back and serve as continuity due to the superb writing and it takes many repeated viewings of episodes to realize it, like many of us old time fans who would rewatch the seasons did during the summer breaks after season finales where we would pick up on things we didn't notice before.

And yes, ranting about the way a Supernatural episode can make you feel is very relatable and approved in this house :D Quick note about those Castiel fans being aggressive with you, they always are with everyone in the fandom and they're insufferable! Now that you are close to the Season 4 ending, trust me there are some extreme fans of that character, or rather a certain ship, who have been a constant toxic presence in the fandom since Season 4 first aired, who are gonna be pounding you a lot moving forward cause apparently that's just their thing, and they do it to everyone who isn't in their echo chamber of twistedness! Cas let Sam out because of the reaming he got when he was about to warn Dean in The Rapture which was the previous episode. They pretty much forced him to go along with their plans and here he was following orders. It wasn't until he disobeyed again in Lucifer Rising when he helped Dean leave the safe room and got smited by Raphael that he was finally done taking orders from Michael and his subordinates.
