John was in hell because of his deal. When the gates of hell opened. He got out, and his spirit moved on. He's in heaven. I don't know if the boys gave him a hunter funeral. Dean was buried, so when Cas pulled him out of hell he had a body his soul could return too. This all from memory of rewatching it a couple years ago. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

So this is where a number of people say Supernatural takes a turn. Some like it, some don’t. It gets very biblical after this & supernatural will never be the same. Also, this is next level & beyond compared to Lucifer. Lucifer plays at it. This dives a little more into it.

It doesn’t matter if it’s correct. The themes are biblical. They could’ve portrayed Mercury, Kali, & Odin incorrectly yet they’re still Roman, Hindu, Norse mythological themes.

Tho Sam & Dean fought a bunch of monsters they a also meet God, angels, demons, Sam & Dean are vessels for the ArchAngel’s Lucifer & Michael, the fight the 4 Horseman of the Apocalypse, the meet the Angel of Death, etc. Just bc the show doesn’t follow the events in the actual bible, doesn’t make it not bible themed. If I make a show with the Character’s Manwë, Finwë, Elrond, Eldarion, & you go look up those names, you’ll see they’re characters form the Tolkienverse. You will say I make a Tolkien themed show, no matter how I tell the story. It’s literally the same exact thing. There are characters in this show that are similar to & named after characters in the Bible: Cane & Abel, Lilith, etc… Those characters are credited to the Bible, therefore make the story weaves around them biblically themed.

He was just a soul then though, it's their body, or more specifically, their eyes that can't survive gazing upon an angels true form. If it was the soul, that psychic would be dead. She's not. Just permanently blind because her eyes were destroyed by the sight of Castiel. But her soul remains intact, just like deans, so it makes sense.
