When I was a kid, I saw many medias depicting Ji Gong as a healer, whenever he was asked to heal an ailing mother or a sick person he would rub of some of his dirt from his armpits, rolled it into a ball and ask the sick person to eat it.... and the sick would be miraculously cured...and yes, eventually he ran out of dirt to rub off....

But hey, I believe the 'ball of dead cell offering' was just a trial of faith, a good person with nothing to lose will swallow the ball, whereas a bad undeserving person will kick the shit out of JiGong for suggesting what he offered...JiGong is mainly worshipped as a 'Sifu', a teacher of morality and humility not just for his superhuman powers.

In India we have category of monks called “Avdhootas” . They are pretend to be mad and don’t follow social norms. They behave like this so that people leave them alone. Often miraculous healing have been reported from such monks.

folklore and history are 2 different things, especially those stories were actually made in Ming Dynasty, when China invented Printing Press. Stories from 3 Kingdoms, Monkey King, Water Margin, and tons of others were born as demand for entertainment for good stories skyrocketed. By the end of the day, just like Monk Zhang Chun told Genghis Khan, if all those mystical power really exist, the world would have transformed into completely different path for thousands of years ago. Why made arrow, when people could just fly in the sky? Why bother looting food, when people could live forever without eating? The war would be fought by 10 human with god's power instead of hiring tens of thousands soldiers marching to battle. All those easy power was seek by people wanted something without sacrificing anything. Unfortunately those people always fail.

At least the story of Jigong gives valuable teachings both by stating it or through action. Unlike superman, all I know is total confusion, I understand to save lives, but the lore just hits deep until there's not enough so they have an alternate universe.
