solid 7/10 In an indie scene that seemingly favors pretentious groups trying to make their sound as esoteric as possible it's refreshing to find an album that's not afraid to have some fun with itself.

interestingly, I felt like this album just wanted to pander so much to a "new kind of indie" sound and audience, felt really forced and boring to me.

@@DarklordofDOOM57 How so? They do so many adventurous things and layer after layer of neat, er, layers of sounds that are ridiculously catchy. For 7-8 (kids), they made a SOLID album with an even more solid and evolving live show. Not to mention B, the pretty brunette backround singer, lead sings a new song while Orono picks up a guitar (when I saw them 2 weeks ago). They are super diverse and I can't wait for their next album which I personally expect to be quite different than this first, or at least with a lot of new "tricks" due to different members singing front and probably other new things. :]

I'd give it a mild 6/10, personally. It's very catchy, but it's demographic is very focused on a younger audience and it gets bloated with the shear size of it. I think that some of it gets so stuffy and it can give headaches at times with how overproduced it is. It tries really hard to come-of as the "New Black Death" (and it succeeds sometimes) and tries to smother its contemporaries, but it's the smaller parts that's so infectiously good. Overall, it's a try-hard that has blotchy spots that look a little watery at times, but quite good production and catchiness.

I think what you said about Night Time is interesting because I felt that may be a preview of what their future sound could be. It gave me that 80's throwback vibe that bands like Pale Waves are doing but not to the point where that's their entire identity. I also thought that was a really strong closing track for the album because it definitely slumps in the middle but picks back up in the end.

I would really love to see an Elliott Smith review. I have been listening to his music my entire life, and the more I listen to it, the more I enjoy it, but I have also realized how good it is and how much talent he had. If you had to review any of his albums, i’d suggest Figure 8- that was his most professional album with the highest production, and I really think the lyrics, instrumentals, and songwriting in general is something you would enjoy or at least think highly of. Anyway yeah that’s my suggestion thanks

what i like most about them is the super laid back attitude of orono (as you said: not too animated/expressive, but COUCHED) in contrast to all the other band members, who play multiple instruments, beatbox, sing, dance and make weird sound effects with straws and quarter filled water glasses. their appearances on npr and kexp are just hilariously chaotic!

I find its most reminiscent of the early Twee Core stuff like early Architecture in Helsinki (see "The Owls Go") or early Los Campesinos or even Unknown Mortal Orchestra. The point of the prawn song is that you *won't* get a cold sore from a prawn. It's about having a fantasy of being a prawn to get away from the awfulness of people, and I for one entirely relate. But then I'm a long time they might be giants fan so sillyness doesn't phase me. As for the album as a whole, I'm a bit obsessed. I agree it's very short but when you look at how much went into it I'm not really surprised. Though when I saw the band I felt really old and like I hadn't achieved anything (they're like fifteen or something)

This record totally brought me back to the 2000 era indie scene. In an interview she pointed out that she was hiding the fact that she was doing vocals from her roommate and waiting for her to either sleep or use the bathroom. Also she hadn't really done vocal work so that's why they are so subdued.
