As stated earlier this is high quality review. After a lot of hesitancy I bought the Max. Not being able to try first these days is a bummer, so I relied on reviews (but only just found yours). I have the Sony M4 and enjoy them but not if I am seriously listening. A bit muddy at times and the bass can be invasive like thick fog Love the AirPod Pro for street wear and with foam tips are very good. So for serious listening I have professional grade Grado. I am not an audiophile but am very sensitive to sound quality. I bought the Max because I don’t always want to be tethered when seriously listening. But after a month I do think that the Max are very good.....clean sound, great bass and detailed treble, and the ANC is great to have. The controls are such a joy as I find the Sony touch to be a bit unreliable. In truth I wouldn’t compare the Max to the Sony or Bose because Max has one foot in a seriously better class of cans. Many thanks. Subscribed.\

To my ears these 3rd Gen Air pods are more comfortable compared to the newer Pro version with the soft gel tips. kzbin.infoUgkxgl8SzyQoymMu-S3V55Dskg5QJ8xr1yCR That said, compared to the 3rd Gen, I notice these do not stay planted in the ear as well. One design issue I think, is you squeeze the stem and click it twice to advance your songs. On 3rd gen you tap the large speaker. The difference is by grabbing the stem each time, you tend to loosen the bud fit in your ear. Not always, but the bud falls out a few times while running. The old tap to change never had that problem for me. I would not have changed that tap function. That said, the newer Pro version sticks in the ear, almost airtight if you want that. I do not like that Airtight fit. So that's why I'd stay with this version as the best trade off of comfort, use, and overall feel.

I got the AirPods Max recently and they actually turned out to be my gateway "drug" to audiophile headsets. After hearing how good they sound, I got curious and wanted to dive a bit deeper into it and tried out a set of HD800s and a Burson Conductor 3 amp and even though I could tell that the HD800s / Burson combination sounded even better, it seems to me that the combined price of those two make it out to an 80/20 situation, where I will get "20%" extra audio quality but pay "80%" of the price for this.

I added a third party silicon headband cover. I think it feels better on my head. It also protects the mesh, and maybe give a little less slippage. I am amazed at its BT range! Your plus and minus review is right on!
The AirPods Max appear to be phenomenal. Auto-switching, iCloud pairing, H1 chips, Good sound quality and noise cancellation, Transparency mode, Spatial Audio, great touch controls, unrivalled build quality (stainless steel and aluminium), magnetically attached ear cups, and a new development is that you can actually remove the head band which is great, but Apple does not seem to sell any replacements or alternatives and this feature is not advertised (though it did come up in the rumours).

Many people don’t get the design of the case but it is meant to serve as a storage/carrying/shutdown case for the AirPods Max just as the respective cases for AirPods and AirPods Pro do. It even has a lid (the flap) that you lower to “close” the case. The design is not the best but that is what Apple was clearly going for with the AirPods Max case.
@SuperReview3 жыл бұрын
TBH even after Apple's clarification, I'm still not sure how vital to the experience Apple imagines the case to be. IMO it's unreasonable to expect the Max case to be used the same way AirPods / AirPods Pro case is used, largely because it's bulky and unlikely to be kept in a pocket or otherwise transported wherever the headphone goes.

I like that your video actually focused on the the features that the Max provide over other headphones rather than just sound quality. A lot of reviews just focus on sound quality and therefore conclude “they’re not worth it”, but I think they’re missing the point. Good review.

I think those cups (without using them) are much better. They’re breathable. That’s one thing about over ear headphones. The “leather” cups don’t breath and make you sweat. My concern with the band would just be discolouration. Get the space grey and that resolves that.
@SuperReview3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, my guess why they chose this material is for breathability and still able to get enough seal to do ANC well. I didn't mention in the review, but the AirPods Max do bleed sound more than other ANC headphones.

If you don’t like the sound signature of any AirPods (or even Beats) you can use headphones accommodations feature in iOS accessibility settings. There is no fully customisable EQ, but it will ask you to answer a few things, and it will adjust the sound profile to fit your hearing. There’s even some level of customisation you can do. It is only supported on iOS devices - not even Macs - as of now, but it does make a huge difference.

I also experienced some of the drops that you noticed with Bluetooth and I think I figured out what causes it. Were you multitasking with other Apple devices? A couple of times I noticed that if I was listening with them on my iPad and I went to my Mac to browse something, there would be a momentary blip in Bluetooth within a couple of seconds of doing something on the Mac. I suspect the software is trying to figure out if it should switch audio to another device and then decided not to. I don’t know if it’s because the web page had an auto-play video on it, but I didn’t investigate further. The blip is a momentary switch to the other device. Hopefully Apple can improve on their device switching logic. It works most of the time, but there are the occasional screw ups.

Happy New Year! I’m a music first audio dude with some gear and I’ve been experimenting with BT for a while looking for good alternatives when I cant sit with an amp and a dac and good wired headphones. I largely agree with your thoughts on the AirPods Max. I’VE A-B’d them with a bunch of gear and think these are actually on the boarder of audiophile world. With firmware updates their DSP can also be adjusted and tweaked which means that their SQ can evolve. I’ll be curious if they give us EQ control over time. About the issues you had with Bluetooth: I’ve had real problems since they implemented a dynamic BT switching capability between owned Apple devices. I’m constantly getting switched to my kids Zoom classes or KZbin kids videos and this “update” preceded the release of the APMs, effecting my AirPods Pro and an older set of AirPods. With regards to your Macs, are any of them running Big Sur, the most recent MacOS? I’ve had no BT drop out (Qobuz downloads, Flac, Streaming) with my MacBook Pro running Big Sur. If you are running an older OS that might be the issue. Lastly I’ll ask a question: did you test the AirPods Max with the optional Lightning to 3.5mm cable? If not I suggest it. The results are interesting, especially if you try them with amp/dac and a DAP.
@SuperReview3 жыл бұрын
My MacBook Air has the latest version of Big Sur. My iMac is still on Catalina since it's responsible for my streaming and I'm afraid early versions of Big Sur might have issues 😬 Interesting that the audio switching may be related. I can't really confirm that with my experiences as I don't typically use Bluetooth on my Macs except for Zoom calls, so the AirPods Max experience was new to me. My guess is Apple will not be satisfied with flaky behavior of brand new headphone + MacBook and are probably working on it.

First review I’ve come across that is useful in discussing the sound quality, especially the bright treble. To my ears, they sounded almost tinny and not even remotely warm. To be fair I’m nearly 50 and have been to far too many heavy metal concerts and played with too many loud power tools and fast cars to have good hearing anymore. But the hearing damage I do have does make me sensitive to harsh noises and the APM were not comfortable for me to listen to. I can agree on the topic of vocals. I actually stumbled upon a setting which you can choose a preset for vocals in the accessibility section of settings on iOS 15.
@ericouicestmoimeme2 жыл бұрын
I don't know if Apple changed the sound signature via internal firmware update in a year. But I feel exactly the opposite in the treble. And I almost returned the recently purchased AirPods Max because of it. For me it lacks in the 5, 6 or 7khz, I do not know. This leads to a kind of veil, a lack of breadth. I don't know how to express it in English (I'm French). Under iOS you can modify the sound a little by going to the settings, accessibility, Audio/Visual, adaptation of the headphones. On the balanced tone mode, it becomes perfect! The sound stage grows in scale, the voices recover a very pleasant slight texture, everything is bigger, airy.
@SuperReview2 жыл бұрын
That seems consistent with my impressions -- the elevated / spicy treble I find in the mid to upper treble, 10kHz and above.
@ericouicestmoimeme2 жыл бұрын
@@SuperReview I don't know... For me there is a lack of treble over the rest of the frequency range from around 6000 Hz. I have a pair of DT 770 Pro 32 ohms which have this somewhat tiring peak at the top, around 9-10-11 khz. It's very sensitive. On my AirPods Max I have none of that. Maybe it's my pair of AirPods Max, I don't know. With the setting mentioned above, I get very close to the sound signature of a Fidelio X2HR. The bass is a little bit more punchy on the AirPods Max (but by little the X2HR is amazing in the lower frequencies for an open-back headset), a few times different soundstage between the two but overall these two headsets come pretty close. Without the setting, I lose a lot of soundstage, details, air. And the X2HR is then much more pleasant. I don't use my AirPods Max on my MacBook Pro precisely because of this. I can't access the same settings as on the iPhone. By cons I am 100% agree with your judgment on the bass and midrange. I feel exactly the same!

I think it's competitive with headphones like K371 and 99 Classics -- different sound, but about as enjoyable for music listening. Something like Sundara I think is a bit out of reach of AirPods Max. Sundara has much better detail and texturing, and IMO a more pleasing, neutral tonality.

I had the Sundaras, but sold them because construction quality of the things is crap. One side of the headband already malfunctioning. Input into one of the ear cups also was wiggling. Just cheaply made. They did sound good though. But also remember they’re open back so if you’re in any kind of environment with noise it’s not good. Anybody around you can also hear the music. If you want good quality wired headphones I would check out Focal. But these new Apple headphones sound just as good, or even better, and I use them a lot more due to the convenience.

Here’s what I don’t get. Apple got rid of the headphone 3,5mm jack. They wanted us to use bluetooth headphones. But in doing so, they did NOT improve their inferior AAC codec. That does not make any sense. What makes even less sense, is to base their “quality” and very expensive headphones on that same codec. I’m sorry, but that’s just a no-go for me. I recently bought a Focal Celestee wired headphones. Before that I had owned a Shure Aonic 50 and Bowers & Wilkins PX. Those two headphones have aptx-hd, and even with that codec, I must say the Celestee totally, utterly beats those headphones in every single department. I guess I’d simply forgotten what wired headphones sound like and put up with those bluetooth things... which are essentially.. dare I say it.. crap. Not only because of the BT, but for the usually inferior DACs inside as well.

Good question, I'm working on my review of the Pandas next. (Got them on my head at this very moment.) An obvious difference is that Pandas don't have ANC, though their passive sound isolation is pretty impressive. Sound signature between the two is pretty different, though both are tuned warm. Where the AirPods Max are what I'd call a "warm U-shape" tune, the Panda is more "warm neutral," with a relatively flat frequency response and mildly elevated midbass + mildly relaxed upper midrange giving it an overall relaxed tone. AirPods are a lot more exciting to listen to, and I think more immediately impressive. But I think the Pandas deliver detail and texture better and, while a tad boring, are a more mature sound. Still assessing them, but I expect the Pandas will get more use from me personally in the months after review.

You’re not using the AirPods Max as intended as the case is needed to shut them down. The AirPods Pro don’t drain because you are using the case as intended which effectively shut them down by placing them into an ultra low power state. Otherwise, the AirPods Pro drain outside the case. Also, if the case is still holding enough charge it further serves to recharge the AirPods Pro as well. Although, you don’t like how the case looks for the AirPods Pro, they are intended to place them into a ultra low power state like the case for the AirPods Pro does.

I'm not too worried about the looks of the case, I just don't imagine that the inconvenience of putting them into / taking out of the case is how Apple imagines people to use the Max. It's fine for transport, but too clunky for casual, daily usage. Here's Apple's clarification on the power modes. Based on this description, I think the case would not have improved battery life for me since, even in the case, they still wait 18 hours to go into ultralow power mode. And I didn't really ever go 18 hours between using them so realistically it would've never happened for me. support.apple.com/en-us/HT211886

Hi there 👋🏾. First time viewer here. I ordered the Airpods Max back in December and I still haven’t received them yet. Supposedly near the end of this month (Feb.) I should be getting them. So, after watching your review, I was wondering if you encountered the moisture issue inside or behind the ear pads that I’ve seen some other KZbinrs talked about. Some had the issue and some didn’t. Just curious to know if that was the case for you. Thanks in advance.

I haven't heard Powerbeats Pros. AirPods Pro are definitely closer to a neutral sound signature than are the AirPods Max. Pro has some sub-bass focus, very tame treble, and mostly neutral midrange. Max midrange has vocals recessed into the mix, with big emphasis on sub bass and upper treble.

I could not consider recommending a device over $200 dollars that was limited to AAC Bluetooth for primarily streaming MP3s. There's no feature set or comfort factor or build factor that can justify spending more money. It's just such a fleece job by some of these manufacturers. The weirdest thing to me about the Max though is the lack of customization when it comes to the sound tuning. For that price I want full control over the device, from tuning to power to noise isolation levels, etc.. This is such a bizarre product.
@SuperReview3 жыл бұрын
Come to think of it, this might be a good reason for me to experiment with my ES100 Bluetooth adapter to see if I can even hear a real difference in the codecs. In casual playing with codecs on other headphones, SBC was the one that obviously sounded compressed to me. But I'm interested to test AAC vs. LDAC on a set I'm more familiar with, like my HD 600.
@dasninjastix3 жыл бұрын
@@SuperReview I have 3 AptX devices and when compared to AAC/SBC I could only tell the difference in quality when I streamed from my Amazon HD library. For videos or mp3s, same diff. Then I got a Mobius. Using LDAC on the Mobius I don't think I can tell the difference between LDAC and wired on CD quality. I think in a blinded test I'd have no clue which was which. Before the Mobius I wasn't really a believer in codecs given my experience with AptX but yeah.. I can hear a considerable difference. Codecs aren't the whole equation though, if you don't like a headphones feature set or sound signature it's kinda moot. But the fact you can spend WAY LESS than 300 dollars US and have much greater scalability with your listening fidelity by choosing a device that supports LDAC would lead me to steer folks away from the Apple Tax. I mean the bra-case is pretty hot I'm not going to lie, but no alternate pads, no custom EQ/DSP options, no ANC level setting, no power off option, and no support for LDAC should mean a sub 300 dollar headphone. It's not material cost you're paying for with that headphone, it's not a premium on acoustic tuning, it's an appliance, you're paying for design on the tech R&D. I just can't abide by that price tag for the feature set. Why do I have jailbreak my headphones?

Well they are 100% comfortable for me. Just as comfy as the Sony XM3s that I had and AirPods Max sound significantly better. Not to mention the pain in the butt touch controls on the Sony, the difficult(for me anyways) to engage transparency mode, transparency mode that only stays on as long as you hold your hand over the earpiece and serious pain in the butt Bluetooth switching. Apple headphones, on the other hand, automatically connect to any Apple device you have nearby which is awesomely convenient. I enjoy the no power button and having them just cut it off when you remove them. Music or video stops playing when you remove them. Overall a well-designed device is very user-friendly. And did I mention the sound is very good. I have a a pair of expensive Focal closed back headphones and to me this sounds better.

Nice job calling Apple out on their BS marketing of "seamless switching between devices"! Even though this as a feature has been advertised as a selling point ever since the first AirPods came out, it has NEVER worked properly or consistently. More importantly most reviewers don't even have the integrity to call Apple out on their blatantly false advertising. Again, nice job and, considering how rare it is to get an objective honest review of an Apple product (that isn't distorted by positive or negative bias) that alone got my thumbs up and subscription.

@nternalPractice3 жыл бұрын
@@Dave_Outside Who cares if it works fine for some people. Tech isn't only supposed to work for some people when the stars line up just right. I've had 2 pairs of AirPods, 2 pairs of AirPods Pros and tried the Airpod Max's for 3 days and NONE of them worked properly (at best 5% of the time). Maybe the problem is one of Apples other half assed products like my flagship iPhone 12 Pro Max or my iPad Pro 11" huh? What a BS excuse that is. My Sony MX4's stay connected to my iMac and iPhone and ALWAYS switch perfectly as I move from one to the other. Apple is becoming a dirt bag company like all the rest, unscrupulous and will do anything to squeeze a couple more bucks out of it's customers. Of course I expect them to try and make money but not by ripping people off with blatantly false advertising (as it does with the all the different AirPods). P.s. I also had a terrible allergic reaction to something Apple has used in the cushions of the Airpod Maxs that caused my ears to swell up and turn and angry red. I have NEVER had an allergic reaction to the 20 or so headphones I've owned in my life. In fact I've had allergic reactions to 3 Apple products: the Apple Watch sport band, the sport loop and the Airpod Maxs (something that has never happened with any other tech product I've ever bought).
