More information on the full size Miles M.52 airplane:
The Miles M.52 was a turbojet-powered supersonic research aircraft project designed in the United Kingdom in the mid-1940s. In October 1943, Miles Aircraft was issued with a contract to produce the aircraft in accordance with Air Ministry Specification E.24/43. The programme was highly ambitious for its time, aiming to produce an aircraft and engine capable of unheard-of speeds of at least 1,000 miles per hour (1,600 km/h) during level flight, and involved a very high proportion of cutting-edge aerodynamic research and innovative design work.
Between 1942 and 1945, all work on the project was undertaken with a high level of secrecy. In February 1946, the programme was terminated by the new Labour government of Clement Attlee, seemingly due to budgetary reasons, as well as a disbelief held by some ministry officials on the viability of supersonic aircraft in general. In September 1946, the existence of the M.52 was revealed to the general public, leading to calls for official explanation as to why the project had been terminated and derision of the decision. The Air Ministry controversially decided to revive the design, but as a series of unmanned rocket-powered 30 per cent scale models instead of the original manned full-scale aircraft that had been previously under development. These unmanned scale models were air-launched from a modified de Havilland Mosquito mother ship.
During one successful test flight, Mach 1.38 was achieved by a scale model in normally controllable transonic and supersonic level flight, a unique achievement at that time which validated the aerodynamics of the M.52. At that point, the ministry had cancelled that project and issued a new requirement, which would ultimately result in the English Electric Lightning interceptor aircraft. Work on the afterburning version of the Power Jets W.B.2/700 turbojet was also cancelled and the Power Jets company was incorporated into the National Gas Turbine Establishment. The design and the research gained from the M.52 was shared with the American company Bell Aircraft, who applied it to their own Bell X-1 high speed prototype aircraft, which went on to become the first aircraft to exceed the speed of sound in 1947.

How good to see such an unusual model and so well flown too. I saw the remains of this aircraft at Woodley (Miles factory) when I was invited to visit in 1947. What a shame that the UK was so poor financially in those days that this project was given to the United States. I subsequently heard that it was, allegedly, given as part payment for our war debt as was the TSR2 design data and other British design data.

Not true, the Miles M.52 never actually existed so there was nothing for the Americans to gain from it. The M.52 scandal is a very embarrassing and shameful chapter in British history and a lot of effort has gone into rewriting what really happened... corruption, nepotism, fraud and embezzlement was what the M.52 story is all about, the secrecy surrounding the M.52 cancellation was to protect the new Labour government and the British people from hearing the shameful truth...

This airplane was designed for Eric “winkle” Brown and would definitely have broken the sound barrier with the ultimate test pilot Winkle aboard. It had a revolutionary jet engine “for the time” aboard and the Americans “stole” much of its technology but THEY had to resort to rocket power on board the X1. OK back to the model, FABULOUS.

Ok troll, you are wrong on both counts. Eric Brown was witness to the whole thing, and pretty much echoed the post you're trying to argue with. The scale model achieved mach 1.3, proving the soundness of the design. The Americans did not "steal" the technology as such, but they bought it. The flying tail was something the British had implemented on this design and the Bell X1 was not going to break the barrier without this vital component. So read up on your history before engaging in the usual (boring) patriotism that we always see on these aviation channels.
@sandervanderkammen9230

@@gergatron7000 Ol' Winkle didn't witness anything... because the M.52 never existed. The Americans could not benefit from an aircraft that does not exist. Bollocks mate, the Horizontal Stabilator is an American invention that dates back to the Wright Flyer. The Fly-by-wire, cockpit adjustable electric stabilator trim system used in the Bell X1 was copied from the *Messerschmitt Me-262* The model rocket was tested by Vickers not Miles and was long after Miles was removed from the project and well after the sound barrier was broken. It in no way proves the Miles M.52 was capable of achieving supersonic flight. In hindsight it is clear that Whittle's engine was never going achieve enough thrust or even become a flight rated design. The M.52 is nothing but a fairy tale that exists only in the British imagination.

@ThePipcg
@ThePipcg 7 жыл бұрын
No, there was never a full size airworthy version built. Some months after the Bell broke the sound barrier, a scale model was dropped from a Mosquito and it completely trashed the sound barrier, thus proving the concept. It was the all moving slab tail that was necessary for control during the trans and supersonic regime. Bell got theirs from Miles since because of the agreement between USA and UK after the war, all aviation technology was shared. Bell's engineers had either a really good look at or were sent Miles' plans which gave them what they needed. I am sorry to say, no aviation technology made it the other way across the Atlantic. Odd that Miles' project was cancelled when it was!

Bell designed the X1 based on the aerodynamic data from the Browning .50 caliber bullet and NACA tests on the Curtiss XP-42 at the Langley Field's laboratory wind tunnel and actual flight tests... another key feature found on the X1 was borrowed from the Germans... not the British. Only Germany had large scale supersonic wind tunnels at this time. Rhere is absolutely no evidence to support the claims that any data from Miles or the M.52 program was ever used in the development of the Bell X1.

They did intend the nose wheel to retract into the nose cone. The wheel stowing between the pilots legs within an enclosure. If only eh? The cancellation of this project & what Bell Aircraft did with the data, especially on the all moving tail, makes me incredibly sad & angry in equal amounts. Wouldn't it be a wonderful tribute to Eric Brown & Miles if the first RC model aircraft to push past Mach 1 was an exact scale replica of the Miles M.52? The design is proven in the 1948 rocket powered scale drop tests so maybe carbon fibre construction with a suitable gas turbine with reheat as the original had. If they could do it in '48 I'm sure we could do it now. It's the only 1st left for the M.52 design and I, for one, would happily devote time, transport & any other help I could give on the furtherance of such a project. Any thoughts?

The Miles M.52 never existed... and no data was ever given the Bell for the X-1 because it didn't exist either. The M.52 program was cancelled after a fraud and embezzlement scheme was uncovered by the Air Ministry and the Board of Trade. Government officials raided Miles Aircraft and found no trace of the two prototypes or any completed drawings that Miles was contracted and paid for... no trace of the money was found, the Crown seized Miles and placed it into administrative receivership after it was found insolvent and its coffers looted. Miles Aircraft would be charged with 24 counts of fraud and embezzlement and the M.52 program cancelled in one of the most shameful and humiliating chapters in British aviation history. Dennis Bancroft was deeply involved in the scandal as was Frank Whittle and Eric Brown. All of the rumors regarding American interference come from Bancroft who never produced any evidence to support his preposterous slander. Whittle was arrested and discharged from the RAF and sacked from Power Jets Ltd. amid allegations of bribery, embezzlement and dereliction of duty. Eric Brown was denied a pending promotion and never received his Knighthood for his part in the scandal. In hindsight we know that the M.52 could have never achieved Mach 1 in level flight, no aircraft powered by an obsolete and inefficient centrifugal compressor jet engine has ever had the thrust to drag ratio to fly supersonic..

The Yanks were given all the details of this aircraft and then ripped the all flying tailplane off to use on the F86 Sabre which they then did not allow the UK to see any of the tailplane details. Very friendly.

Not true, the design of the M.52 was never completed and no protype was ever built. The Bell X1 and the F-86A Sabre broke the sound barrier using the fly-by-wire electric stabilator system copied from the Messerschmitt Me-262. Britain did not invent the stabilator as is falsely claimed.

Hansard Civil Aviation HC Deb 17 December 1942 (on line) Before the war we had a number of debates on civil aviation. Those debates took place because there was in this House a large body of opinion that all was not well with civil aviation. I can assure the Government that there is still in the House and in the country a body of opinion which is perturbed about the position.

X-1 was rocket powered though. So any engine tech received was on hold for a different project. Besides we yanks gave back with some of our nuke and semiconductor research for getting the brits turbines and early radar stuff. I think most would consider that a fair deal.

America needed help setting up the Manhattan Project with Britain's help. only later was the two way information sharing deal scuppered by politicians in the US. The nuclear information sharing was only started back up again after the UK demonstrated hydrogen nuclear technology after Operation Graple X tests. The American bomb designers liked the fail safe electronics the British tech experts had on their bombs and the British got access to larger hydrogen bomb tech. so the nuclear tech sharing deal did come good in the end. As for just giving technology away, the real travesty was us British giving 50 Jet engines to the Russians that then copied it and put them in their Mig 15 fighters. It is said that Rolls Royce asked for royalty payments for the engines and the Russians told us to sod off. Fortunately history did not repeat itself when the Russians asked for help designing the Tu-144 in terms of braking systems, air flow restrictions on the engines, low speed handling and air conditioning cooling inside the cabin.

The cockpit was a jetisonable escape pod, something the Americans didn`t bother with on their X1. If the British Government hadn`t " pulled the plug" this would have almost certainly broken the sound barrier. The designers also were then told to give the yanks the "all flying " tailplane design without which their attempt would not even been possible. I do wonder who`s side our government is on!

Freaky design. Big body, tiny rocket wings. Looks more like a missle. It looks like it could fly fast, but it looks like the air intake, or really the whole fuselage is very fat for the length of the aircraft.

The Miles M52 joins a long line of political short sightedness the TSR2 and many others. In my own country Canada the Avro Arrow! Government should never be involved in advanced technology except to fund it . Elon Musk is a prime example of this. If Mr. Musk had relied on government he'd still be drawing prototypes on napkins.

The m.52 scandal is a very embarrassing and shameful chapter in British history... a perfect example of government corruption and embezzlement. Miles was charged with 24 counts of fraud and embezzlement and Frank Whittle was excused of embezzlement and dereliction of duty, he was forced out pf his own company by the scandal.

I'm trying to determine what the 'scale speed' would have been. Watching the video, I 'guesstimated' that the model covered approx. 300 feet in 4-5 seconds. That works out to around 51 miles per hour, actual speed. I could compute from there the 'scale speed', but I DON'T KNOW THE MODEL'S SCALE...........

Marshall. You have a funny idea of time and distance then. A scale model of the M 52 did mach 1.3 and proved the M 52 was more than capable, the jet engine for it had enough thrust to exceed mach 1.5.
