When I worked at Oreilys, we had a situation where a new customer would spend a lot of money on parts. He would pay by check, the check fraud detectors would approve the check. First couple purchases went through. Then one day the manager tells us. Not to do any business or warranty claims because the checks have bounced. Customer shows up and we tell him We can't do any bussiness and that the manger will be here shortly. Long story short, my coworkers and I almost got assaulted by the customer. Because the district manger wanted to rack up the most money charges. To sue him and win, while my manager wanted to stop him from taking our inventory.

I found this out when contractors just start rambling as if they're in some sort of job interview about how much experience they have, their military service, and just how good they are through how many customer reviews, and how they've been doing the job since they were 12 or whatever. Usually a sign they're full of it, do terrible work, and the customer reviews were paid for. If you're such a great person, you don't put forth your entire life's history trying to impress people who don't care.

Why not just charge the deposit and subtract the deposit from the final charge after inspection? Wouldn’t that save you the fees of a refund and guarantee some money from the start?

It only comes into play on the larger of the rentals. I would view that as petty from a customer stand point. Since the frequency is so low, it's worth just taking the risk. Most people spending bigger money aren't scammers and this is usually a non issue.

How would you run the final charge, in that case? Whether you charge up front and hold authorization for a deposit or you charge the deposit and hold authorization for the remainder is semantics. The issue is that you want to take a bunch of money guaranteed and refund the balance, which incurs fees, or you take on some risk by not collecting all the money up front. Tolls and parking tickets make all this even more complicated because they can post months after the rental is over. $500 speeding tickets from speed cameras in Montreal are not fun to deal with, and they happen.

He's not a Marine medic. The Marine Corp doesn't have medics. They use Navy Corpman in combat as medics. Infantry units that that see high levels of combat will use Navy personnel that have been through something similar to Navy Seal training.
